What's the original color for your 72? [/ QUOTE ] Mine was originally "Sundance Orange" -- a much darker, kinda burnt orange color. ~G72 |
Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
What's wrong with that color? It's new for '72, which makes it unique because there aren't '71s in that color.

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
ORBIT ORANGE WAS USED AGAIN IN 1979-80 ON CHEVY Z28'S [SPECIAL ORDER] MY FRIEND HAD ONE BRAND NEW,I'LL FIND THE CODE!!

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
"06" is the code for Orbit Orange on the data plate.
In the books it is "60" for some reason? Can you get a pic of the Z in Orbit Orange? I would be interested in seeing that. I don't remember any special order colors in those years. Would be cool to see. |

GTO DON, you are thinking of Bright Yellow color code "11"
Check it out at: http://www.nastyz28.com/decode.html#trimtag Orbit Orange was never used on any other cars. Only 1970 GTO's. I have talked to a paint rep that supplies paint to us at GM and I had him do a little research on the codes and such. Check out the picture attached of a 1979 Z28 in Bright Yellow. |

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
GTO DON, can you check this out?
From my GTO Resto Guide shows Orbit Orange for 1970 ONLY. Paint code 06 (T) Dupont 5210-L Ditzler 2257 Rinshed-Mason 170B770 NO Orbit Orange for 1971 in the 12 GTO books I have here. |

Just to throw this into the mix. The Rinshed-Mason Product chart for 1971 attached does not show 06 or 60 nor does it show 51 Golden Red Yellow nor 65 Carosel Red. On the PPG chart there are asterisks by each of these and at the bottom of the PPG chart it states these are "1970 spring colors"
Don't you just love this. |

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
Goat72,
Went to both sites. In the first site the original color does not look Orbit Orange but more of Canyon Copper color. In the second site he states it is not a Judge but a clone. Leads me to believe he may have changed the color. Still a beautiful color. If you go to the first site and back up one page you will see the car as he was working on it. Check out the second pic. Kind of hard to tell but not the same color as when the trunk was installed and the trunk is open in anothe pic. Pardon the pun, but you be the judge!! |
Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
I agree that Orbit Orange was not available in 1971. Often, with colors specified as mid-year Spring colors, they appeared in the next year's chart, as shown in the link.

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
I will have to dig up my build sheet to see when my Judge was built. I think it was Feb 1970.

[/ QUOTE ] I believe Steve Stratham or Tom DeMauro mentioned in their book(s) that Orbit-O was only available in 1970. Someone tried to tell me that Chevy "Hugger Orange" was the same color as O-O, and that GM was "too lazy" to mix other colors for different divisions. I now know that Hugger -O was way more of a "pumpkin" orange. I also read that true orbit Orange is supposed to be dead-on the color of orange juice. The reason being is that in summer '69, when the 1970 colors were decided, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon -- "TANG" was very popular as the "astronaut's drink", so Pontiac jumped on the popularity of NASA and developed "Orbit Orange". I've seen a few "sundance orange" GTOs and while they look great, they have no "stand-out" appeal. I have never liked earthtone colors on cars -- especially muscle cars! Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
I told Steve Statham about the Orbit Orange color when he photographed my Judge.
Hugger Orange for Chevy is Carousel Red for Pontiacs, color code "72". Olds has a very similiar color but it is not color code "72". |
Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
bandit, gtodon is correct. it was used on 71 gto's with special order. gary daniel in tulsa has a 71 455-ho gto that was built like a week or two after the judge option was dropped and it came with (original paint still on the car) orbit orange paint (phs shows something like special paint), judges stripes and rear spoiler all documented on the phs

I have alot of factory lit. that I got from a guy who worked @ our Pittsburgh zone office. I got a 70 dealer album new cond. cramed w/all kind of notices & memos. I found one dated nov. 4th, 69 listing orbitorange paint for judges, but extra charge for non judge. http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...mlins/flag.gif

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
I see your're in witchita. I just got a 71 TA there. It is a 1 owner w/53k miles. 455 ho/4spd, no console & 3:73 opt. rear. Car is orig. down to hose clamps. It was sold new out of Salina. http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...mlins/flag.gif

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
Just found anothermemo" Car distrib. Bulletin" dated oct, 3 1969. Lists special order on the 1970 model? Guess that means available on other models. I can't recall ever seeing it on anything other than Jdge & Gtos. http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...mlins/flag.gif http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...ns/scholar.gif

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
Hmmm. http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...s/confused.gif Didn't realize you could get any gear in the 455HO except the standard 3.42 due to emissions laws. A body was 3.55's. I tried to order 3.90's in mine and was refused. Dealer got notice that it was not available in anything other than 3.55 unless air was ordered and then they were 3.31's Optional gears were only available with the 400 in the a body. Don't know F body but would imagine if available in A body then available in F body also. http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...s/confused.gif There may have been 3.08's available also. Does PHS documents show optional gears? Just curious.

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
eric, whats the number on that memo? you might have the key to the whole ra v mystery. JM told me there was a high energy distributor option that came in the trunk, some sort of transistorized ignition like the chevys had! maybe thats the 105.00 option on mikes tin indian car!!! http://host.threadshosting.com/~yenk...ns/worship.gif

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
PHS on the GTO's I have had showed what gear ratio it had and if it had Safe-T-Track.

Re: 1970 Judge Color breakdown
Hi, you could get the 3:73 in f-bird TA. This car was ordered as real runner, no console M 22 car. He had ordered a RAIV in oct of 1970. He was too late, so he ordered the 71 as close as he could get to the RAIV. I feel lucky to get a 1 owner car.I'm waiting for the PHS docs. I will @ some point pull the seats to look for orig. sheet. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

He said it's a Judge clone with a 400, but he's got a 455 waiting to be dropped in. He said the car takes-on a brownish hue under cloudy skies, or at dusk, but the color gets plenty of attention. ~GOAT72 |
