Any chance getting to see really what you started with. I see the picture from the back but a side view or 2 would be great?

The link in post #1 has some more early progress shots but here are a few more.

The second owner, “Bucky” told me he rear ended a girl in a Mustang with it in the early 70’s and put the glass doghouse on it at that time. He was alway hacking it up, said his dad blew his stack when Bucky cut up the console so a super shifter would fit. Lots of stories from him which are great. I can’t wait to reunite him with the car this summer.

That was after some disassembly when it was heading to the chassis shop to get new rear frame rails and trunk floor. It had been modified with narrow 2x3 square tube rails. Then that effort failed miserably with respect to dimensions (the rails were 2-3/8" too close together and all the gaps were finger painted with seam sealer) and I took it back from the body shop and started over. After the new floors, rails and quarters were installed on a proper frame jig by Jube Mayes at The Installation Center in Georgia, all I've subbed out is the brake calipers and master/booster restorations, boring and balancing the shortblock and some minor head porting.

I give you a lot of credit for taking that on! I bet you can’t wait to drive it!!

It’s really a labor of love now. When the seller told me he had a RS 68 for sale I saw it from 50’ and passed. Then when I saw it was a power steering deluxe red interior Z, I decided to go for it.

scuncio 01-22-2025 09:55 PM

That will be absolutely stunning when done.

Can’t believe someone could screw up frame rails to that degree. Whew.

NorCam 01-29-2025 03:49 PM

I half chuckled when I saw you post about the storage of freshly painted parts stored in your basement. I have a section of my rec room assigned to the storage of a painted front clip right now (55 Chev) as well. Keeps it out of the way, and hopefully it moves soon. (lol)

Keep up the great work. Paint looks a mile deep!

I wasn’t happy with how the trunk lid was coming out so I blocked it out again and laid down some more clear tonight. I’m getting tons of practice doing everything twice….

NorCam 01-31-2025 03:54 PM

What clear are you using and what gun/volume. Looks like it flowed out nicely.

Stressful moments. Drilling holes. I didn’t get the trunk lid emblem holes done before painting it so I’ll have to touch them up to prevent rusting but here is where I am now.

Using Chick R’s measurements for the non spoiler hole location I drilled the three Fisher body holes where the emblem got placed. (A fourth hole gets swallowed up in the upcoming spoiler mounting hole) Locations marked as A on the paper.

Then on D80 option cars the emblem got moved forward 3.27” and new holes drilled. To locations marked B on paper.

Using Jerry M’s Z/28 book I mocked up where the pin stripe will be to make sure the interface between the stripe and emblem is good, and the stripe fell right at the spoiler little support leg like I see in a few of these. I compared to several original paint cars.

Dave Beem’s blue Z was built on the same day as mine so when everything was lining up to match it I felt pretty good about the layout. There is a good bit of variation but this car seems to be a middle point from the ranges I’ve seen.

I used my header panel emblem to drill the holes that will be hidden by the spoiler (visible when the trunk is open) but I’m looking for the correct trunk lid emblem before I drill the forward holes….just in case there is any variation in the mounting studs.

I found an original trunk lid emblem. All the parts houses sell the front and rear as the same but the profile of the Chevrolet section of the emblem is tapered on the front header emblem (shown on the right) and squared off on the rear trunk lid one.

Interesting. I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks

enio45 03-02-2025 08:06 PM

very interesting - how did u find one - i can use one if you know of another.

SMS 03-02-2025 08:20 PM

The rear trunk lid emblem is part number 7752901. The header panel emblem is part number 3916654, both cast into the backside of the emblem.

There are several 2901 pieces on eBay but the quality is pretty variable.

enio45 03-02-2025 08:23 PM

Sorry , so the 2901 is tapered emblem?

No, the 2901 is the squared off one, correct for the trunk lid.

enio45 03-03-2025 01:18 PM

thank you for the info again - ordered a used one on ebay :-)

A few quick pics. When wet I found a couple spots needing attention so I think I’ve got them all now. Unmasked for a deep clean and now remasking for paint.

Love it!

NorCam 03-18-2025 02:29 PM

I'll second Tim's msg.

Here's that video clip pasted into the sYc youtube link in the message box. You have to enter a shorter version of the link (just the code snippet that is coded after the v=) in order for it to autoplay on your post. :smirk:

Final masking after work each evening now. This style of masking the trunk opening was a pita but I wanted to be sure I got enough red on the trunk hinge supports and latch area.

Congrats on the work you have done! I have a friend who did own a '68RS Z/28, also red on red with lots of options, fold down rear seat, power steering & a tilt steering wheel. He had all parts except the engine block that was sold out of the car and never found. He's sold it somewhere and moved on. Glad to see yours has been resurrected!

RSMS 04-20-2025 01:54 PM

Very nice work!!! Cool it's a deluxe interior car and red to boot. Can't wait to see more pictures, guys like you and Chick detailing your work is so much appreciated!! I'm hopefully getting closer to my 12D 68 being started on, I just have to stop acquiring other distractions.

That sounds like a great package. Was your friend’s red interior the deluxe style? I’m trying to keep track of the similar cars and have only seen one other red / deluxe red RS Z. It was a white vinyl top one.

Started on the N30 steering wheel and column refresh. Main issue is some plastic cracks to epoxy.

Finally got some color on this thing...

Diamont Code R Matador Red base, tweaked slightly to better match some of the existing original paint remnants.

Plan to clear it after work tomorrow.

Milestone. Finally got it in some clear. I'll let it cure for a few days then sand out some texture and lay down a couple more coats. Overall feeling pretty good about it.

So good. Love this car! That steering wheel looks very nice for an original. Normally they're crazed around the spoke to rim area, and most have up to 1/4 inch gaps in the rim splits.

I have some MarineTek epoxy coming to fill what cracks there are between the spokes and rim. Glad it won’t take too much work.
