Did a quick search on CRG and cut and pasted the 67 4P section:
4 P L48 or L30/M20 yes ENGINE REINF ASY SS350 or L30/M20 - Non SS396/Z28 paint with radius rod (See note above on early Norwood use.) N L35 yes ENGINE REINF ASY SS396/325hp - Black tailpan with radius rod K L78 yes ENGINE REINF ASY SS396/375hp - Black tailpan with radius rod L Z28 yes ENGINE REINF ASY Z28 - Rally stripes with radius rod F D33 yes MIRROR REM CONT - And really cool car! |
...
.... Did other 1967 camaros that were 396/375 4P cars normally have a BLACK tail panel ? :dunno: ... |

I know of an April 4P L78 and you can see the blackout inside the trunk area. Just for the sake of it can you snag a photo of the trunk latch area to confirm it too does not have any black on it? Example of my 68 L78.

... Yes, I will get photos of that and several of the engine compartment. :3gears: |
Richard, the missing wheel well mouldings that are part of the 3k option, were most likely removed in preparation for drag racing. I’ve seen multiple drag cars where they removed them to avoid tire rub. Sometimes just the rear sometimes all 4.

Here is a pic of an original paint nose stripe on an L78. Looks nearly identical to yours. When I first saw yours I thought it was repainted because of the bigger spacing on the bottom of the stripe, but you can see that this one is the same. Very cool car.

This is a pic of my nose stripe that was layed out per the dimensions giving in the 67 AIM book. Looks like the pic Mark posted IMO.
John, your 4P car is the first one I’ve ever had a chance to look at in detail so I wasn’t aware of of the no black tail panel deal. Thanks for sharing these pics with all of us. Does it still have the square single traction bar or did it ever have one? |

SS396 test car in May '67 issue of Motor Trend also did not have a blacked out rear tailpan.

Was that a 375 hp car ? ... |
...
... Does anyone have a copy of an original 1967 Salesman's order form ? ... I was thinking that possibly the confusion caused by the use of 4P on the cowl tag could be that on the Original Order form there may have been more then one way to order a 375hp Camaro .... by "checking " the SS 350 Option and then also "checking" the 396/375 Option ... thus switching out the 350 motor to the 396/375 motor ! ... I am wondering that this confusion started on the Original Order Form being that this was the first year of the Camaro ? .... :confused2: ... |

I’m seeing a difference in stripe emblem placement ? Is it an optical illusion? The SS emblem on the original paint Camaro butts up to the body line and the stripe is well below the body line. On the white ‘67 the stripe butts up to the body line and the emblems are well above the body line. But yes laid out in similar fashion. The white Camaros Layout is most like John’s Camaro |

John your car sure appears to be original paint and it just slipped through without anyone catching it. Not common, but understandable for an early L78. |
Here's what I know of the 4P L78 cars. 10 are known and there are two more that appear to be added L78 engines. Several of the 10 are block or docs only, so no vehicle data.
The first cars were the pacers. The first L78 for public sale was Jenkin's car. The only non-IPC cars that are known to exist are: Jenkins John's blue car Mark's old red car White convertible that Richard knows about. |
I wasn't aware Jenkins car was sold through a dealer to Jenkins. Good to know and thank you for the information.
Not to derail this thread but are there any more early photos like the ones I posted previously? Hoping to see it in more stock form (before lettering). https://www.yenko.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1640224188 https://www.yenko.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1640224188 https://www.yenko.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1640224188 |
Thanks for that info Kurt! I always wondered how many might have been produced.

.... Thanks for the info Kurt.
... All of every one's input is greatly appreciated. ... |
4p l78
there was what we felt like a real one on ebay a number of years ago. It was in NJ so Phil Bate and I took a ride over to check it out. It had all the signs of being a 4p l78. I think it was early an april car and had all the big block heater core and frame mounts with the 4p code. I think it was black. He may have put it in his reg. as a possible car. I will have to find out

... My car was put in the garage around 2008 and the owner started to Mini Tub the rear wheel wells to accommodate a wider tire and rim ... but he never completed it. ... The work was not real clean and I want to have it redone. ... Should I put it back with "Stock" wheel tubs ... or put mini tubs to accommodate the wider tires and wheels like he was trying to do ? ... ... All his races were done with "Stock" wheel tubs. ... I appreciate ALL input. ...:dunno: ... |
If the work was already done to your satisfaction, then I'd leave it, but since it needs work no question return the wheel tubs to stock configuration.

I love drag racing but I'd put a car like that back to stock tubs.

Really like the period photos of these old drag cars.
Any progress or thoughts on the rear wheel houses ? Any pics to see what has been done ? If the floor, or frame rails, are butchered and needs replacement, it may be easier to finish a clean install of mini-tubs. If it is just the wheel house, that is a fairly easy replacement and can look quite original when done properly. |
Except for the early big blocks. Same thing with the first few Z/28s in 67.
|
congrats on the car!!

... Does anyone have the vin # and cowl tag info on Grumpy Jenkins 1967 396/375 Camaro ? ... My Camaro was built 03D ... Which I believe is the same week that Grumpy's car was built. ... I would also like to see how close the body numbers are. ... All that info I believe would be shown on the cowl tag info. ... Thanks for your help. You all are a wealth of knowledge ! |
His car was built 2 days before yours. Next car is 2 weeks later!
