I hope I can see this car in person and how it compares to mine (very similar, except for mileage). Mine is 4 months later so there will likely be differences. When my car was invited to a vintage display there years ago, I learned so much from folks on how to tell a car's originality.
|
Congrats Doug. Hope to see photos from this weekend of its unveiling.
|
Anyone have photos of the car at the show? Please post thanks!

Ok ok ok. Tail panel is the most satin one I have seen on a orig. car. Amazing car.
|
If I am reading my historical temperatures right for Cincinnati in the 4 week of February 1969 the temps were between 15 and 20 degrees that week, SO the tail panel looks exactly as it should given the cooler reflow reaction in the final oven.

Good detail shots. Thank you.

Look at the Temps on the 14th... Plenty cold.
|
On February 26th and again on the 27th it dropped to 0 degrees in Erlanger KY at the airport where the records were taken.
On the 26th It was 0 at the start of the shift and again at the end of shift. on the 27th it was 0 at mid shift on DAY shift. Norwood was another 20 miles north of there so its very likely temps could have been well below zero at the plant when these temps were recorded. |
Laughing my ars off.....love you guys but siting ambient temps 55 years back is a sickness but a good one.
Really don't think any temp variance would effect something that chevy was in the habit of qc, the finish and it's consistency. |

Doug’s car looked amazing!
|
THAT is a very impressive car, wow! There is nothing like a well preserved time capsule.
|
Wowwwwwwe……. Congrats!
Can someone explain why, when red stripe was installed? Thanks |
Nice to see a correctly installed air cleaner seal.

At the 1969 MY intro, black was an RPO color for a short time, then dropped. There were few early production black cars.
A famous early production black car [10 B 711] was the L78/auto SS owned by Joe Oldham. It was featured prominently in Baldwin-Motion ads and a few articles in pulp car mags back in the day. He wanted to delete the D90 stripe and Chevrolet refused to do it; early photos show it was built with a white D90. Shortly thereafter, he had the D90 stripe removed. January 1969, black was added as an extra-cost color. Maybe at that time the default D90 color was changed to red. |
Absolutely fantastic car, one of the main reasons I made the trip today!

Just a few I took. A couple rotated, but you get the picture.
|
That was the first time I had seen those resonators on a first gen. Amazing car.
|
Awesome!
|
I noticed that the trans has a drain plug. I thought drain plugs were added in 1970 on the Muncie transmissions. Or this a M22 thing only??
|
Pretty certain, in '70 they all got drain plugs. Before that M-22 only.

Doug was awarded 98.6%! What an amazing car!

Very cool Paul... it appears to have been built just a couple of days before mine. I would bet on Wednesday, February 26. Before lunchtime.
:rolleyes2: |
Rob, the PBT are green, second shift

As that car was being driven in from the delivery area, there was a crowd of people following it into the Vintage area and once it was parked, I couldn't see the car for the next hour, as it was absolutely hidden from view by bodies. One of the judges said it was "The Belle of the Ball" and it attracted crowds of people all day. It truly is amazing the condition it was maintained in and so clean underneath.
Congratulations to Doug for his new treasure. |

As highly scrutinized as that car was for 2 days, they may have found a few loops in the carpet that weren't perfect... |
Amazing car. I know it got docked for the missing jacking instruction sticker but per Doug the orig. owner took it off himself as it was crooked or something.
|
That's a car I'd be poking back every hour on the hour to weed through the fans. Not picking, just correct my eyes if I'm seeing things, but the heater nipple at the water pump appears to be painted orange???
|
The car achieving Time Capsule, speaks for itself. There was a lot of anticipation, and this car did not disappoint. The crowd around the car never diminished and was enjoyed by all!!!
Congratulations to the original owner /caretaker and to Doug for sharing the car and participating in our intense Vintage Certification program. |
this was a treat to see in person. I wish I could have seen the top side. Unbelievable car. Lucky owner. Noticed only a few differences to my car that is similar (curved neck 4 core vs not, scratching head on that) and did they write 'BLK' on the firewall (I did not get to see that). Red stripes were the same with distinct details. Car is an art piece.
If all the discussion is true on air temps impacting curing of paint, my car would have been bumping up against late June/4th of July temps which would have been quite different to this car. Mine is definitely not that dull and was a shock to see. I am sure mine was polished by hand. Temped to take some wax stripper to it now and see what happens. |
It was an honor to be among some of the elite top tier survivors in the country . The judging team spent numerous hours pouring over the cars for all the nuances that make these cars so special. The crowd was continuously filing through to enhance their own knowledge of their favorite cars.
|
It does say blk and m22 on the firewall
