Yes, same deal in '68 for LOS cars. Sorry I didn't say something but I hadn't anticipated you pulling the tank out and stripping it.
|
Ain’t your fault! I was the one with the MEK and steel wool..!!. Lol. Ohh well.. live and learn. I might try to reproduce the blackout as I was the one that removed it. Idk. I’ve got time to make that decision.

Excellent work and great pictures on this one Darrell. The trunk cleaned up really well as did the floors on the interior. On the exterior, the rear tail panel looks fantastic and the exterior panels really came back after the cut and polish. I can't wait to see the floor pans and tunnel area under the car and I'm hoping they are as clean as the top side?
I need to ask, was this a base interior car or deluxe interior? |
Thanks.
Deluxe interior no gauges & no console. |
Awesome...can't wait to see what you're doing with the interior. Cheers

Not certain if this is original spray on the heater box cover but its consistent all over it and the blower motor.
Photo 198 - 199 - Heater box cover and blower motor before cleaning Photo 200 - 202 - Cover and motor after I will probably go at the cover with thinner or reducer once I can confirm this isn't original. We don't need another gas tank mishap.. Photo 203 - 204 - Closeups of date & part number Photo 205 - Fastener blower motor Up next is the heater assembly inner. I'll have a follow up with details of the blower coil and bracket as well as floor duct. Photo 206 - 208 - Assembly before cleaning. Note the #7 on the box. The tank had 20. mixing of assembly parts as they don't really matter as long as its a non big block or A/C. Idk what it is at this point but documenting it nontheless.. Photo 209 - 211 - After cleaning The inner box does have that textured finish like the dash top to note as well. And yes I do plan to soak it. |

Small updates. Been too cold to get out in the garage for very long here but started on bolts, screws etc of cleaning and preserving.
Process is as follows: I’ve setup several small plastic containers. First one is citrus degreaser to soak the bolts etc. pull them and clean them with a blue scotchbrite pad and dry off. Then into 1st container of evapo. Sit for 24hrs, pull out clean again using the evapo as the cleaner along with blue scotchbrite pad then into another container of evapo and wait another 24hrs. After that pull out towel dry then use PB Blaster silicone lubricant. Photo 212 - 213 - Hardware as found. At least it was bagged and tagged back in the late 70’s early 80’s. Photos 214 - 215 - 1st rd of hardware after cleaning. Photo 216 - 217 - Sunvisors after cleaning. Forgot to snag a before. |
Niiiicce!

Not much going on here on the preservation front but I was able to snag a correctly dated jack assembly and an original trunk mat.

I'm going to study this thread over and over to clean my car up. Thanks for sharing.

Starting the long and slow process of the undercarriage cleaning. Be prepared to be underwhelmed with photos of dirty and then clean floorpans.
Photo 221 - 222 - Before Cleaning Photo 223 - 224 - After 3rd Pass Photo 225 - 228 - After 5th pass across area As I said this will be a slow moving train down the tracks so I probably wont post much if any until I get the full mid section completed. And yes the plan is to pull the subframe, springs and diff out of the car but that will have to wait until I can pull the front sheetmetal as well. |
That looks great. What are you cleaning it with?...Joe
|
Thanks, Zep citrus degreaser with a blue Scotchbrite pad and then wiping with cheapy microfiber rags and then hitting it with #7 Meguiars.
|
You're taking good care of my next project Darrell. I want to thank you for that.
In all seriousness...nice work and good progress too. |
Thanks. Don't hold your breath..:beers:
|
Wow - that looks amazing. I would not have imagined it to turn out as well as it did based on what it appears you are starting with. That subframe looks new!
|
Idk if the sub has been painted or not. I'd guessed that it has but I will find out upon removal.

I can't believe the transformation that I am seeing. Great job on a really sound car. I wish you had my old W30 car to work your magic on, it would have been unreal.
What did you use on the bolts? |
Thanks. There’s always the possibility of me reopening RGR (Red Gorilla Restorations). Well maybe I should call it RGP (Red Gorilla Preservations). I’m kidding.. As for the bolts, just the usual clean with citrus degreaser, evaporust and then I soak them with a silicone lubricant by PB Blaster.

A little more progress over the last 2 nights.. Almost have the center section of the tub getting close. Hope to dedicate some time over the weekend on some more cleaning.

I took some time away from laying on my back and cleaning and pulled the front clip off the car. Also shot a quickie video of ole green while I let her warm up this morning. Memories of my father flood back to me every single time I hit the key.
