I sent the F.I. unit out to Ken Hansen last Thursday 1.7.21. I already received these 2 videos today. I'm glad I enlisted the help of a professional

I see what you mean Bruce.........

Funny, SYC seems to be the only place I posted where the problem exists.

Technology is not my strong suit for certain:)

I've started to gut the dash in order to replace the insulation on the firewall and the wiring harness's. I'll also rebuild the wiper motor, radio, dash cluster. I cleaned up the original 4311 brake booster. That's getting sent out to Mike Gibbons for a mechanical refresh as well.

Certainly, the car did not sit in the most ideal of environments. I knew the windshield had been replaced for one reason or another. Looks like it was leaking, but the windshield frame is really solid:)

I ordered a new gas tank, as I fear I will always fight this tank and what finds it's way into the F.I. unit. What isn't pictured is all of the rust pits

Hi Tim,

If you email the videos to me-or give me another link, I can most likely get them to show up here....

Great build and read. Love this car! Keep the pics coming.

Living in the north country like you, I kept waiting for the discovery of the mouse condo in that insulation. I guess CA mice don't need to take up residency in cars over the winter.

Crazy clean not only for it's age, but for sitting for so long. Nothing like a southern car to work on.

Funny story..........so once the drivetrain was out, I was steam cleaning again. No big deal, right? I blew out about a 5" long dog chit. Found it laying on the shop floor. I'm thinking to myself....."WTF"?

I think it came from below the battery mount. That's a first for me!

Thanks for the kind words:)
Tim

Ever see a coon turd ? they look a lot like a small dogs. More likely for a coon to crawl up under the tray...:dunno:

Here you go Tim, this should work!

I've been cranking away in the shop in the last few days........

One would think the retired parts gut could order the right u joints for the half shafts.........guess not. They turned out nice after the soak in Evaporust.

The machine shop is wasting no time. The block only required a hone (at .030 still), the crank only required polishing. I went with new rods and pistons that will get me in the 10.5:1 neighborhood for compression. We will see once the heads are done as to exactly where compression lands. Certainly, pump gas friendly with the fuel injection.

In between working on a couple of new cars I got in, I managed to start rewiring the front of the car and clean the headlight buckets. I do not know how these T3's are dated......can these be original?

Be careful cleaning the T3s. Avoid any kind of cleaner near or on the stamps. It'll come off. I'd just lightly brush the dust/dirt with a nice clean soft brush.

Any updates Tim?

napa68 03-05-2021 10:54 PM

I've been working on the 64 a little bit, not much as I've been working on a couple of other cars I have in my shop (67 L79 Corvette and a 68 Z28).

I spoke to the engine builder today. He dyno'd the motor with a carb and intake (Victor Jr. and a 750 Holley) 407hp @5500 and still climbing. His dyno historically is rather stingy. I'll be curious to see most importantly what the torque curve is. He made a point which I agree with, no sense spinning the daylights out of it and tuning anything until the F.I. unit and appropriate distributor (along with manifolds and exhaust) are on it. In order to manage time and a schedule, I am not going to spend the dyno time with the F.I. unit. My plan was to install an LT-1 cam in this as I have previously. Well.........no one is really making the LT-1 cams anymore aside from Howard's (which was at least a 5 week lead time). Yeah, you can find NOS cams around.........for about 500 bucks give or take. So, we found a cam that is very similar. Perhaps a bit more advantageous given where the valve timing is.

A friend of mine is picking everything up for me week after next and is bringing it up to me (as the engine builder is 4 hours away)

The fuel injection unit should be done soon. Once it is, that will go on a mule car he has. He'll chassis dyno the mule and then road test it before shipping it back to me.

Crash has the tranny. Once I get that back from Eric, I can start to screw it all together.

I'll have to fit it in at my shop, as the work is starting to fire back up again. I have to get going on the 68 Z28 so I can get that up for sale, and the 67 Corvette has some detailing for the Bloomington Gold Benchmark judging.

Tim

Hard to read, but I think this may work pretty well.

Wow, AMS, really? They built a 350 for my high school car back in 1994. Nice to see them still around.

----Making awesome HP for a 327 fuelie, and I know there are some adjustments that have been made. Good on you, NAPA!

napa68 03-20-2021 12:54 PM

A good friend of mine brought me the engine yesterday, so I had a chance to get into the shop early this morning to assemble a few things. Your thoughts.........should I dust some paint on the motor of just leave the turd as is???

----Boy! Hard call. As much paint as is missing I think I'd have to paint, but I would understand your reluctance. I just can't leave anything alone, a possible character flaw!....Bill S

Tracker1 03-20-2021 04:08 PM

I would leave it. Opening the hood and seeing fresh paint would be jarring, out of place. But that's just me.

1969L89 03-21-2021 01:00 AM

No paint, leave it the way it is.

Too Many Projects 03-21-2021 01:04 AM

If you truely mean "dust" as in very lightly and leaving it aged and dull appearing, I would cover up some of that bare steel, if for no other reason that to prevent rust.

scuncio 03-21-2021 02:07 AM

Agree, I would have to put something on it, maybe a dusting and some light boeshield.

carnut4life 03-21-2021 04:30 PM

The block looks pretty good from what I can tell, I'd get a spare head or oil pan and mess around trying to make it look aged like the block. I've read articles about it being done before but I've never tried it myself.

RPOLS3 03-22-2021 12:53 AM

A light dusting would be perfect to at least try and replicate the survivor look.

napa68 03-22-2021 09:12 PM

A couple of experiments with Chevy Orange, some black (dusting each) and then following up with a scuff pad........this is what I came up with.

I think once it gets some heat cycles in it (as well as covered up by manifolds, water pump, shielding, etc.) it should fit in with the rest of the car.

By gawd, that engine looks 100% better than all that bare cast. It looked rebuilt and unpainted prior.

TimG 03-22-2021 11:53 PM

A bit of salt water in a spray bottle works well, Tim. Try it and reapply as needed.

1967Z28 03-23-2021 03:32 AM

Looks good, Tim. Fuel pump plate should be black.

MJV1953 03-23-2021 04:55 AM

Tim, you do amazing work. The engine look great!

carnut4life 03-23-2021 06:07 AM

That looks great Tim! Can't wait to see what it looks like when you get it back in the car and get a couple hundred miles on it.

napa68 03-23-2021 05:56 PM

I started to make the plug wires and screw it together today. Waiting on different terminal ends for the distributor side of the wires (wasn't impressed with what came in the set).

I've got to dig through my collection of junk shielding to see what I have for the plug shielding. I just laid the F.I. unit on there for now

Starting to look like nothing ever happened;)
