Went back in the archives and did some diggin. I attached some pics of my old 69 L78 Nova, specifically the Fisher Build Sheet and rear stampings. Some items to note

The build date of the car was April 26, 04 26 (denoted upper left on BS)
Rear CAST date was April 11
Rear ASSEMBLY date April 18

The rear was more than likely, original to the car as to get a 69 BW rear with matching dates to the rest of the car would be next to impossible. Now on the COPO issue, and the experts can chime in here, boxes 12 and 13 appear to indicate any COPO designation, there is nothing in those boxes.

I would only add that the CRD on the Nova broadcast sheets has been somewhat of a mystery meaning credit to some and customer order to others and in this case i think Smoky believes this is means COPO. ONLY Smoky knows.....

Here's a '77 newspaper article on the Copo 9C1 Novas as Joe mentioned above.
Last is an ad for what sounds like one, somewhat amazing to see the Copo word being used in 1978.

As i mentioned sometime back i rode in one of these COPO Nova 9C1 police cars a guy i worked with years back purchased one at an auction. This 1977 car really could handle with the F41 suspension and the 350 cubic inch L48 motor had some good throttle response and transmission had a good firm shift to it. I know back in the 70s era the police really liked these cars locally because the City i lived in purchased these Nova's for their police fleet.

Sorry for sidetracking into the 9C1 Cop Car Novas but they somehow belong w/ this stuff too.
Anyone w/ more interest in these cars, here's the thread from two years ago w/ one of the Copo '74 prototypes...

Wow! Lots of photos of so much wrong for $80k!

Most liberal use of engine paint overspray I have ever seen. With that much extra paint, you'd think they would call it out on the trim tag!

And terrible panel fit, not to mention all the other things wrong. For $80k, you'd expect perfection.

However, I love L78 Nova's, just not this one.

'69Novajoe 01-01-2021 06:02 PM

I am totally not a Nova expert but am learning a lot by reading a lot of the posts about them!! I didn't see anyone mention anything about the seat belts but I believe they are "wrong"??:confused2: At least they don't look like the ones I have in my car!

Sorry, bringing back an old thread.
Always good to post any documents we come across for future reference.
Came across these pictures.
1969 Nova SS L78 M22 10-10 black and the “9511” 4.88 gears.

In addition to the post above, this one here having Canadian VVS docs.
Some areas have been trimmed and blacked out for privacy purposes at this time.
1969 Nova SS L78 M20 and code G82 4.56 gears.
Edit to this post. For clarification - this is an early built car - Sept.
The first 4 weeks of production you could order rear gears with RPO code - it did not require a 9511.
Hence the no 9511 on the VVS documents.

Jefferson, Any idea if the black 4.88 car still exists?

So what is the digit in the vin that is in the fold of the window sticker ?

JRSully 11-28-2025 02:41 PM

I sold a 69 L78 Nova a bunch of years ago, that had what appeared to be an original BW coded 4:56 rear in it. Had no docs other than a Fischer body sheet indicating a L78 4 spd, but the build date and cast dates were dead on for the build date of the car. Was sold new at Lindner Chev in Colorado Springs. There are pics of it on the site here somewhere

Your posting w/ pics is on Pg.#5 of this thread, preceding page post #43.
Good info as Jefferson’s Edit above, 9511 not required w/ Axle options 1’st weeks of production.

I think the 1969 black on black L78 4sp Nova with "factory" 4.88's was a Brantford ontario car as a friend of mine, the original owner of another 1969 L78 4sp Nova did recall this car and I even knew the og owner name of this 4.88 car.

427 STRATO might know more about this Paul Van De Karr, 1969 4.88 Nova!

M20 and 4.56 axle doesn't sound like the ideal setup to me

Did some more digging, the Lost Muscle Car page on FB is quite a good source.
This is the same person who posted the information on the black Nova.
Quite a cool little back story!
Looks like the dealer number 28352 was Lyman Chev in Ohio for both cars.

Followed by the Nova story and a clear picture of the window sticker showing the complete vin.
