The attrition rate for the Queen City '67 Zs is pretty high then. I only know of one, a Tahoe Turquoise std grille car.
I'm not contemplating a show only car. I like to drive. A show only car is something I would sell as it just takes up space and I don't have space to burn. |
great find - excellent followup getting to the owner to acquire the car...!

The production date of 4/21/67 listed on the shipping data report seems kind of late for a drag car.
It doesn't rule it out since they may have not been trying to compete for the championship but the first NHRA race of the season was the 1967 Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway, Pomona, California on 5 February 1967 |

Understood Joe, but Bill Jenkins' first race with his L78 wasn't until May 28 at Englishtown and he took the Division 1 Super Stock Eliminator points lead from his first race.
Yenko ordered three Zs in December '66 that were part of the first 25 built, one each in red, white, and blue. Later they ordered six more Zs, two each for the three colors of red, white, and blue. This one was built and delivered almost a full month earlier than the other five. It may have been because it was earmarked to go racing and to allow time to prepare it. The other five were apparently ordered to have stock on hand and I don't believe they sold quickly. The attached info sheet from May 27, 1967 shows they were still trying to sell one of their Stormer Z-28s which they'd had since January. -Jon Quote:

Not to sidetrack the conversation and idk if Cecil was before Englishtown but this is the earliest that I’ve seen of Grumpys 67. Pay close attention at 4:15 mark. Cool video throughout but just thought I’d share. |
Cool video, Darrell. According to my issues of National Dragster, Englishtown was the Division 1 season opener on May 28th. Cecil County held the 3rd Annual Super Stock Nationals June 23-25. Cecil County was not part of the '67 World Championship series.
|
I’d be surprised if that was taken in June based on the trees without leaves and everyone wearing jackets or long sleeves. But idk.

Good point and looking at the photo in National Dragster there is more lettering on the car at Englishtown. Englishtown was the Grumpy's Toy III debut in the World Championship series and that started May 28th for Division 1. My red car getting built and delivered in April would have had time to be ready for the start of the series.

Back to original purpose of the thread. Fantastic car and I personally hope you letter it like it was raced.

Congrats on a killer acquisition Jon!!!

Great research, Congrats.
As a teaser: I had a strange hunch John could not scratch his itch with the 68Z & a 67 would be just the ticket. Good Job sir. Wow Jim W |

The former owner John who sent me the other pics has a bunch of pictures of the car both prior, during, and after the restoration. Here is a picture of the interior before repair and several pics of the tunnel section that he cut and and kept as a memento. He had this to say about the tunnel... "Might be hard to tell from the pictures but the original sheet metal definitely had something hit it hard." He says he just cut out and replaced the tunnel areas that needed repairs but the main floor was in good shape and was saved.

Such a cool union of car and owner. Congrats Jon!

Thanks, Tim. With the help of John, a former owner, I've got it tracked back to C&C Motors in Trenton, GA back in 1990. Trenton is in the upper LH corner of Georgia, not far away from Chattanooga, TN. The car is supposed to have been black at that time with the tilt front end and side pipes.

Cool find Jon, and very smart of you to have run the NCRS on it. I did that once on a car I was interested in, and I have a sneaky suspicion that you will start seeing a lot more of that being done now that you have found a winner and put the facts out there.
I also like that you know so much about these 67's and had already known so much of the story by talking with Ollie Volpe and others about the cars and how they were raced, owned, and wrenched on. This car landed with the right person for sure! Thanks for sharing and good luck with everything going forward. Very cool!!! |
Thanks for the compliment, Graeme. You've done a great job on the research and restoration of your car and I look forward to seeing it completed. So many great cars, car stories, and people on this website.

Congrats Jon.

A great car ends up with the perfect guy to make it right.
Congrats Jon! Looking forward to watching it progress. |
Congrats Jon....the car found a good home.

Very true except it was a '68 that had some '67 tail lights in it. Very fast, very competitive racer who knew and hung out with the best of the best from that era.

saw this Corvette drag car on an old FB page with the last name Volpe from about 5 years ago

Great pics! Thanks for posting. I spy the Knafel Pontiac 'Tin Indian' Ram Air IV Judge.

Love the detail Jon and glad I helped with something for the car. I’m with Darrell as that would be cool to have as a driver but looking like it did in 67 race trim. By the way, I was at the 67 super stock nationals at Cecil County, MD. Even have some pics of cars like Dyno Don’s 67 comet that blew blower off and busted the back plexiglass around both sides of his head. Again great car and another great find.
|
Thanks, Joe C. Yes, that Corvette was raced by Ollie Volpe prior to him getting my red Z. I like the saddle interior in the Vette rather than the typical black.
Thanks, Chick. I always appreciate your help with parts and beyond that you're just a great friend. The lettering on the car is cool but we'll see. I'd like to find more pics from its history. |
Kool find, congrats!

I don't know what the background looked like at Atco but it's certainly one of the tracks he would have raced at.

Amazing find, congrats!
