I was leaning more toward bare aluminum and now I have more reasons to keep it that way. After all these heads were offered OTC in ‘69?

Looking forward to firing it up soon.
Gary is very meticulous and really knows his stuff.
Good Luck!

That’s funny I did see that engine on the stand, and I think I was there a few days before he picked it up. Gary was talking to him about it the day I came in and told him about the project. That same day I bought his crank and block. Now I just need to sell some things to get it done. I will be posting progress photos of the engine. For all of us to enjoy.

My vote is to leave heads bare Al - jig's up as soon as the hood pops anyway, which we never did before street races... but cars got "known" pretty quickly...

Yay!

SuperNovaSS 05-09-2020 02:49 AM

I vote bare as well. I agree, popping hoods are generally a no no when you get serious unless you were very stealthy.

Bare it is!

Also... another parts teaser. Here is the air cleaner. I'm literally just going to wipe the dust off the inside and install. It's just too perfect as is!

Picked up the booster/cap/combo valve and I'm really happy. I'm finding that it's sometimes more affordable to rebuild/restore parts instead of buying new overseas repops. Not to mention it's definitely more satisfying. Can anyone decode this booster? 0222 / 1926

Straight to big block! I was only going to install the 350 to break it in and give a customer a test drive but I didn't need to after all. The 350 has a new home in a '69 Camaro from Alameda CA. Hopefully sell more things later today to keep this party going. :3gears:

Update:
Some before after photos.
I lost a photo of the rust on the inside of the valve covers.
If this drop base doesn't work out, I think an L88 drop base should clear the stock hood.
Almost done getting the '72 4781 carb gone through, before after coming soon.

Update:

Watched Two Lane Blacktop for the first time in my life.
The carb is ready to go.
Also found some unused Hedman Hedders locally very cheap on offerup.
I dropped them off to get high temp coated white.
School is officially out so hopefully get more time to finish welding up the trans tunnel and the other tub.
Storage is getting cluttered again, can't wait to get all these parts on the car.
Two Lane Blacktop is definitely inspiring my build. More Pics soon.

markinnaples 06-06-2020 03:15 AM

Congrats on the build, looks fun.

What are they charging you for the header coating if you don't mind me asking?

I will let you know this week. I know it's cheaper since I'm paying cash.

Such a cult classic! Love the part when James Taylor is attempting to flirt with the girl at the gas station explaining the life cycle of cicadas :naughty:

I just had mine done for a big block and it was $260 here in the Detroit area.

Definitely having fun with the build. The place I'm taking it to is just beginning to offer high temp to 1700 degrees in white so I'm waiting for them to receive the colors and going to talk pricing. Ballpark around 250 bucks he said but I'm also getting other things blasted and when I pay cash I save a pretty penny. Good thing they didn't get the colors yet I may run a different set of headers after all.

The transmission is a '70 Chevelle M22 and it looks fantastic on the inside so I won't be rebuilding the transmission. I will most likely just degrease the case. After I sold the autogear M20 I was going to run a TKO600 TCET5009 so I still have the 3.55 rear gears. For now I'm going to keep the rear gears since should still pull pretty hard and I'll be right around 3k on the freeway which isn't terrible.

The 454 will be bored .30 over and will have the ZZ502 Cam which has a very nice powerband. I've heard the weak link on the zz502's is the lifters and valvetrain and thus 5800 was the limit but we will have upgraded lunati link bar lifters and valvetrain which should support a few hundred more rpm. I was recommended to run the factory dual plane intake with a cutout in the middle but I'm keeping the divider and running the 850cfm carb. If I use the cutout, I'd be inclined to find the correct Holley with the distribution tabs on the boosters to help with the a/f ratio distribution and those are $$$. So I'm sticking with the 163 dual plane and '72 store bought Holley.

The rear is narrowed 1" total and with the 15x10 steelies with 4.5" backspace it should work out perfect without having to relocate the springs. I found a photo online of someone using wheels with the same measurements on a non-tubbed/non narrowed rear (See Screenshot). Can't wait to get that look!

Chuck_Burg 06-10-2020 10:23 PM

Narrowing the rear 1/2" on each side allows for a 15x10 to fit with 4.5" back space? That's useful info.. I don't have a rear end yet but this would allow me to run a wider rear tire too!

Disclaimer I'm not going to paint mine at the moment so I'm not too concerned if I have to massage/roll the outer lip to gain clearance. If you narrow the rear you may hit the inner wheel tubs with a big tire. The guy in the photo is using stock tubs and a non-narrowed rear, I don't know what they did as far as the outer lip clearance. I do know for a stock setup for 67/68 people are running 17x9.5" with 5.5" backspace 275/40/17 and that's just about the biggest without problems but that fitment is tight with no tire bulge.

Hope you all are being safe. I've been trying my hand at selling parts online to raise money for more important things than my car. I've also been enjoying family time with our son Jeremiah who just turned 1.

The engine has been coming along slowly since I was indecisive on which block to use, and my engine builder just got back from a long overdue vacation. Good news is the engine is now coming along.

Engine builder said he has finished one side of the block. The rotating assembly, balancer, flywheel, clutch, just got sent to the balancer. I forgot to mention I found this under the rear set. Pretty cool to see a US flag not made in china.

Update: Engine builder is on another vacation but states engine will get on a stand this week. My build is getting a little less sleeper but the goal will remain to appear unassuming from the exterior.

Scored this roll bar removed from a '68z and I'm pumped about it. Anyone know about the Hobrecht brand? Sticker says "Hobrecht Roll Bars & Stuff". What other stuff did they make? I'm going to install the roll bar as is to match the look of the car until paint.

I'm not too concerned about modifying the rear seat frame for the roll bar as I already have to modify the frame for the tubs.

I've also decided to run the Hush Thrush Turbo's I had for sale and I'm just going to bolt them up as is after reading that's how it was done.

More updates hopefully soon!

AnthonyS 08-28-2020 01:04 AM

Awesome!

1967Z28 08-28-2020 01:05 AM

Bill Thomas has Hobrecht roll bars listed in his 1970 catalog. Do you see a part number stamped on this one? The bar you have does not look like one that would fit a Camaro floor pan so it's interesting that you say it came out of a '68 Z.
