Watched it live, AWESOME!

Lee Stewart 01-10-2020 06:43 PM

I really thought it would sell for a lot more. Didn't seem like there were 2 or 3 bidders who just had to have the car.

Congratulations to the above members who came the closest in guessing the selling price.

Fast67VelleN2O 01-10-2020 06:45 PM

I wonder if the owner had any private offers above this and he turned them down in anticipation of getting more at Mecum?

I would say unknown. The deal was struck between the owner and Mecum months ago.

The true value of the car would be determined by it going to auction as it did.

Tidmack 01-10-2020 06:49 PM

I too, thought the car would do better. I predicted $10 million back in August, but got nervous when rumors circulated about the sale only being open to U.S.-based buyers. Can anyone confirm if the stipulation that the car remain in the U.S. was indeed true?

LOL - 1968 Mustangs don't sell for $3.4 million. :scholar:

Tracker1 01-10-2020 07:23 PM

Is there a 10% buyers premium at Mecum Kissimmee? If So that means "Frank" will pay $3.74 million for the Bullitt Mustang. Close enough to what a dozen of us guessed at $4 million. ;)

Makes me wonder what it would have done at Scottsdale in a couple weeks on a boozy Friday or Saturday night...

TomP 01-10-2020 07:35 PM

Never underestimate the buying power of drunken millionaires. They pay ten times the going rate at Scottsdale for Batmobiles and Futureliners and stuff.

I was out at the $3500 opening bid but it looked like just two rich guys were interested and it really didn't gain in big increments after getting to two and half mill in a couple seconds.

Pretty decent return on the guys investment though and I wonder what the future holds for the car?

I would imagine the owner has been paid quite handsomely from just Ford JUST for the advertising and promotional usage of the car and likely well into the 6 figure range if not more. There are other entities as well that likely paid handsomely to be a part of it. More power to the owner and hope he had good contracts. His retirement is set.

I figured it would go around 1.5-1.7 range. Did better than I thought.

I looked at the NYSE being way up, so people are investing that $$$ for a return that these cars are not doing anymore. So as I saw the L88 rag be a no sale at $375,000 I figured the money's not really there for the high high end stuff. Some of the major players have been selling off and not coming back. Youngin's just don't value these cars the same way......

big gear head 01-10-2020 08:00 PM

Anybody know who got it? Is it staying in the US?

Cheap! I do not understand..... they pay for some Ferrari Junk, Mercedes, Porsche... but this is a one of one Steve Mc Queen. Better than any Rembrandt.

Frank Mecum bought it. The announcer states that at the end and points right at him.

1969L89 01-10-2020 08:29 PM

I'm surprised it didn't sell for more and sell on Saturday during "Prime Time" like when the bus and the LS6 conv brought crazy money years ago. If Frank bought it maybe Friday was intentional to keep the price down for him.

Mr70 01-10-2020 08:40 PM

Frank is the name of the Bidders Asst.,(Not the Name of the Buyer),who helped get that Bid.
The auctioneer mentions the name of each Bidders Asst. and the end of a sale so the paperwork people know where to go to get the signature. In this case,Danas son,Frank Mecum. https://journal.classiccars.com/2019...auction-block/

BJCHEV396 01-10-2020 08:43 PM

I thought Ford might buy it before it was announced that it was going to auction with Mecum.

earntaz 01-10-2020 10:23 PM

Sold for 3.4 mil ...

TomP 01-10-2020 10:29 PM

Maybe one of our Canadian members who were there got it... and has an extra half million for the tax and GST at the border.

Be nice if the car gets put on display somewhere.

My guess is the guy with the museum back east that has been buying Yenko's etc ? Or Evan with the "Only original once museum" in Socal.

I thought they said it was Frank Mecum who bought it, no?

Frank was the bidders assistant who was working with the actual bidder who bought the car who at this time is nameless

Not the Simeone Museum in Philly? I've visited there two years ago. He has that Cobra Daytona Coupe that is unrestored and also on the National Heritage Register.

rsinor 01-12-2020 01:40 AM

Nope, red 67 L88 coupe, Barrett-Jackson 3.85M

Tracker1 01-12-2020 02:00 AM

True Roy yeah, I think a few of the 67 L88s are 3 million+ auction cars.

Oops! Misread what was published. It needed to be about $3.6 million to beat both the 67 L88 and the 1971 Hemi Cuda convertible sold in 2014 (sale price + commission)

Tall guy that sometimes would have a pair of young blondes sitting with him in the front row. I’m told he is a nice guy and as I recall he does a lot for animals ? Drawing a blank but his museum might be in Florida ?

TomP 01-12-2020 04:01 AM

You could post a picture of the young blondes to help us out. :)

EZ Nova 01-12-2020 12:08 PM

I thought I read somewhere on here that Pratt paid 5.5 for the Supersnake?
