Call me crazy but I'd rather have the clone that Dave (A12 Pilot) built so I could drive the heck out of it.
There's different tiers of cars, this is not a car you drive the heck out of.
Yeah, Dave's car was pretty awesome.
Potential 10mil can buy a lot of fun cars!!

Never underestimate the king of cool factor and how it relates to valuation. I was at Monterey years ago when the 911 he drove in the opening scene of Le Mans went for 1.3M to a Japanese collector if memory serves. Remember, this is the hero car that pretty much started the whole chase flim genre. It's the little things like how he opens the door at the car wash, it popping up in the Chargers rear view etc..big want from liquid folks.

The owner of the Bullitt '68 Dodge Charger camera car would probably be a very serious buyer too.

The Bullet Mustang is in Somerset KY. today at the Somernites cruise in.
Personally I would not pay 1$ extra for the car even if Steve Mc queen was sitting in the front seat himself. It's a movie car that happened to have someone famous drive it, McQueen probably didn't drive it during the chase scene.
Here's a what if. What if the Bullitt Mustang and Jim Morrison's Shelby went together to auction, which one would bring in the highest bid? Yes I know Jim's Mustangs has never been found. I personally would rather have the Shelby, but then again I really like the Door's music.

The last time anyone saw his Shelby was right after he totaled it. He didn't buy it BTW. It was given to him by his record producer as a gift for the success of LIGHT MY FIRE. |
No actor equals Steve Mcqueen's coolness factor except maybe Paul Newman. In my opinion.
How much over 10m estimate would it be worth if it actually was in a good movie and the car was a desirable year, color, or even a hi performance model ? We are talking about a car that without the movie is a plain jane 20k car.
Cool car no doubt ,mostly to a 70 yr old and up that was at least a teenager in 1968 but the hype on this one is way over the top.. Its future value regardless of what it brings wont be timeless ,it needs to bring the money now....IMHO |

And it will bring the money now. It is being hyped for 5 months - then it will be put on the auction block for ANYONE to purchase. No private sale here. No anonymous buyer. And anyone with an internet connection can watch the sale. |
That old letter from Steve himself wanting to buy the car back then, has got to have added to half the cars value today. :burnout:
That car won’t go over 5 million
We should have an over under pool!I'm saying under $5m but hoping it goes for a lot more!
Retracting my guess :-)

1935 Duesenberg SSJ once owned by Hollywood legend Gary Cooper brought the highest amount paid for any American car at auction last year: $22 million |
And nobody cares about the classics anymore. Though wonder what Gary Cooper's Persol's would go for ...

here is a list of the top ten for 2018
the Bullitt Mustang will probably need $5M plus to make the top ten for 2019 https://www.classic-car-auctions.inf...ublic-auction/ |

I was watching a Los Angeles-filmed movie from '69 called 'The Model Shop' this weekend. Great, great scenes of late '60s L.A. Anyways in one scene my eyes bugged out at this - I know Max Balchowsky who built the Bullitt Mustang had a shop in L.A. "Bullitt" was shot in San Francisco in April '68. The model shop was shot in L.A. in June '68. Maybe McQueen was taking one last spin after filming? Or Balchowsky brought it back to his shop and was tooling around? I dunno... long shot, probably out-to-lunch, lots of Highland Green '68s with aftermarket wheels in LA circa June '68 I am sure, but something sure does look familiar about the stance of this 'Stang. Hi-def versions of this screen grab are not available but the license plate is dark with yellow letters for sure. Got an actual grab from Bullitt here too...
I love this geeky car movie stuff!
So, did the Bullitt car have it's backup lights removed or were they blacked out? The 'stang in your move has them. |
You raise a good point. At least one car had them removed, maybe both.

Getting close!!!!!
Not sure what day it's going over the block..... https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0120-39...ng-gt-bullitt/ |
Lot F150 would be on a Friday.
When we get a little close to the actual auction date I will rerun the "Guess The Selling Price" poll thread - to give people a second chance (and maybe for some a first chance) to come up with their best guess.
A friend of mine is headed there and I will give him eight hundred bucks to pick up the Bullitt for me. I suppose it's $880 with commission? I feel that is fair based on condition.
He thinks millions but i'm not sure it is shiny enough for the rich mooks and the young 'uns either have no interest in it or no money. I was surprised to see it being auctioned, but maybe as someone already posted Ford got their value from it and doesn't need it anymore. I assume it was Ford that was responsible for the car for the past two years? |
