Sam, Terry(RamblerDealer) and I plan to have an F85 meeting Saturday. Look over the car.... maybe start it...... do some donuts....

I started a spread sheet, and Sam is gathering parts right off the hop. E-brake cables, suspension bushings, etc, etc.

We are looking at rotisserie’s, I want to use the style that can be used to lift the. OSG off the frame as well as a typical rotisserie, and obviously will be used to put the wickedly orange body back on the beautifully detailed chassis.

The car came with an extra rolling chassis which we wil use to support the body as the chassis is completed.

One thing I learned on my resto is that the engine/trans can be left till later in the process so I plan to set that whole assembly aside for a while. (I want to have it rebuilt, Dyno it, and install it)

Another process change I want to try this time is to break apart the front clip with the chassis as many parts can be media blasted and powder coated together as one package deal.

Sam, Ranjit, Terry (RamblerDealer),and I spent the morning assessing, pulled out incorrect bucket seats and console. (Perfect to sell)

This car is untouched, every single item we could think of was in place, we verified the trans code and VIN, lots of fun.

She needs lots of love :-)

After the photo opp I put on my full shield, but wanted to look pretty for the picture :-)

Agree, I hit the bottom with a hammer and got a shower.

Put your shield back on....we all know what you look like! (LOL)
Getting rusty metal in your eye(s) is no fun.....having it removed is worse. You'll only have to do it once, and then you will ALWAYS wear a mask or safety goggles. Waddya think is one of the first questions you are asked before an MRI? "Have you ever had metal in, or removed from your eyes? It's not a laughing matter.

Indeed he should. And a woolie cap or a hood. That s#!t gets everywhere. I learned the hard way building one of my old race cars about 35 years ago. Not a whole lot of fun watching the ER doc stick a needle in my eye to remove rusty metal. Yes, even fresh metal will be rusty by the time you get to the ER. I ALWAYS wear safety gear now!

Ryan1969Chevelle 03-03-2019 11:04 PM

Solid points!!

Safety first.

The first step to restore a 1970 F85, is to detail the front clip of a 1969 442 Convertible.

It is really hard to stay on track with so many fun projects to pick from.

This is a one owner (Sam is owner 2) Glade green 4 speed 442, manual steering, manual brakes. We are going to restore the front clip and the body is getting painted.

3.90 with a M20 is a brutal first gear for an A body...

Whew!!! My first gear ratio is similar to M20 2.50 and 3.91. (Mine is M22Z 2.99 and 3.42)

Thanks for accepting another package, I need to have a set of gauges delivered too. :-)

I would like to know what the difference is in a W-31 and a regular 1970 olds 350?

Balancer, and alum intake. I would think cam, but what else?

Now you are speaking my language!!!

Many subtle differences.

Special clutch (same as an L88)

W31 only specific items below:

Balancer
KA special water pump pulley
Flat top pistons
#6 heads (the W31 #6 heads have with 2.007 intake 1.625 ex)
Camshaft
Valve springs (also for W30)
Intake
Carb
Ignition has special calibration
Breather OAI

This is by memory.... I must have missed a few differences.

EZ Nova 03-20-2019 02:27 PM

Thanks Ryan.

I've always heard of the W31 and a friend of mine built a W31 back in our High School days (early 80's). Car ran high 12's. It was a '70. We (group of car "kids" at the time) thought it should have ran better, like low 12's maybe even 11's. We always thought the Mallory Uni-lite ignition was crap.

Just increasing my knowledge base. Had an idea for a W31 "inspired" Rallye 350? I "heard/read" that unless you have a build sheet, original bill-of-sale, there is no way to tell if the Rallye 350 is a real car or a made up one? Talking to a buddy last night, he says I should do a Rallye 455!!!!!

Depends if you are talking Pure stock or modified... the record for pure stock is 12.38 ET, modified is unlimited.

Rallye 350’s are cool, especially the Sports Coupe’s!!!

EZ Nova 03-21-2019 12:31 AM

So is there any way to tell that the car is a legit Rallye 350?

- - dash dash special order Sebring yellow paint would be a good first step.
As far as I have read no W31 Rallye 350’s were built but W27’s were built.

Don't know how I missed this thread. Looks like it has been around since Feb.

Hey Ryan, how about some updates?

Ryan1969Chevelle 08-20-2019 08:56 PM

Pete: Thanks, I let Sam know so he can buy them. Nice memorabilia !!!

Lynn: This one stalled big time!!! I haven’t been nearly as available as I thought I would be and Sam bought a survivor 1969 Cutlass S W31 4 Speed and he has been working through the bugs to get it back on the road (sat since 1988)
