Looks really great, congrats on the successful landing! Not too far back a member here advertised Ed Stinn decals also another had a Stinn Keyfob. :beers: ~ Pepe . |
It'd be nice to find an original Ed Stinn decal (hint hint).
Went through the car a little more today. The bad is that the original harness has the wiper motor wires and heater box wires cut short at the terminal block so I'll have to look for an original front wiring harness. Also needs a heater core, wiper transmission, and a new cowl panel as the holes were filled in and painted back in the day. The good news is that it retains the original M21 dated October 28th, and the original 3:31 12 bolt dated October 17. Might try and find a nice CTB block for it down the road somewhere. Car is 10B so those both align perfectly. The 2nd owner is also sending me a bunch of original pictures from the car from when he owned it over a 24 year span. His neighbor bought it new in 70 from Ed Stinn, added the day 2 mods in the 70's and kept it until 1992. Gary then bought it and kept it until 2016 where it was sold to Mel. Now I'll turn the clock back on it somewhat. https://image.ibb.co/ktNcLf/CBS-1017-G2-E.jpg https://image.ibb.co/cT9eY0/P0R28B.jpg |

All that is a good thing - car never saw bad whether. |
Very cool. Look forward to following along.

Thought I'd share some pictures provided by Gary Cunningham (the second owner) that show the original car with the original owner. Most of these I am told are from 1970 to 1972 when the car was setup with it's day 2 gear. Looks good with the M/T black valve covers, Cragar SS wheels and the J-bolt traction bars that are still on it now (going to restore them back to yellow and have original decals for them as well). The car has 36,000 miles on it and is still in excellent condition with all original sheet metal intact. Looks like I am it's 4th owner after Mel had it for 2 years. Only spot of rust anywhere on the car is a couple bubbles on the right rear fender lip. They will be addressed and blown in this winter.

Parts carton perhaps? https://image.ibb.co/hdEyAf/009.jpg Look at that 70's hair. I remember those days. Black M/T covers too. https://image.ibb.co/nb9yAf/010.jpg Original interior w/ bench |
Love the vintage pics!

Day II Deuce
Congrats on your purchase. A beautiful car for sure! I've known about that car since the early 70's, a fellow named Gurkovich owned it and worked at the Sunoco station at Tiedemann Rd. & Brookpark Rd. He used to leave it on the corner of the station when he worked there. I believe he lived in the West Park area of Cleveland. The car was present at the Last Night at Diney's Drive-In on West 117th st. in October of 1975, which had to close due to the construction of I-90 interstate in the area. I remember he had a built 327 with tunnelram and dual quads on the car and with 5:13's, it was wickedly fast! He and a fellow named Duely (spelling?) with a Red 1966 Street Hemi Belvedere hit it off at the light on W.117th & Elmwood Ave. at the end of the evening! I am a friend of Gary Cunningham, the next owner who used to live in the West Park area, and he returned the car to a more streetable vehicle to cruise with during his ownership. It sure brings back memories seeing those pictures! Good Luck with your purchase and keep us updated. Don.

Very cool hearing anecdotes like that Don, and I thank you for that.

Nice move. I like where you are going. Those are very spunky gutsy motors!!!:eek2:
|
Great buy on the car and engine.
How years was it, before GM had a higher performance sbc in a production car? I remember looking at low mile '69 Z's in the '70's, with 1970 LT1 replacements. I would have done the same, with either rebuilding the original 302, or buying a crate LT1. |
Looks like this one will be getting a set of Cragar's thanks to Sam Scardino. I'm thinking 8's and 4's will look good on this car.
|
No stock ride height on this car. Not for now anyways. I've got low profile tires for it if needed and also have shorter slicks as well. Wheel lips are already rolled, diff is centered and it has 275's tucked in it right now with no issues. Not really too concerned as I have a few sets of wheels and tires to play with and will find something to fit the rears. Thanks for the numbers in either case.

I'm running Cragar 15x4 fronts and 15x8 rears with custom offset with 4.75 BS with 275 drag radials. The car has stock multileaf springs diff is centered and have no issues. I took the upper shock shaft cover off it would rub.

Another picture that Gary sent me. From the 90's with the Welds on it.

Day II Deuce
Don here again. The custom black pinstriping and fogging was painted by another friend of mine, Ron Badiu, back in the early 70's. Ronnie Jr. has his own body shop here in Litchfield, Ohio.
|
Don,
If you talk to Ron Badiu, can you ask if that was done over the original paint on the car? Except for the hood it would appear to have mostly original paint with some checking in a few places. I'm thinking the ghosting was done over lacquer and at some point it was clear coated? Just curious what he may remember about the car and if it was ever repainted? |
Killer car and the Cragars will look right at home. Love the '70s theme myself....
|
Playing around with some wheels and tires today. I like the Torque Thrust rims myself and mounted these up with Firestone 5.60.15 front runners on 4" fronts, and a set of NOS Mickey Thompson H50/15's on 8.5" TT's. Thinking I'll drop the front springs and add an inch to the rear for some added clearance via Hurst Air Shocks. Then comes the vintage line loc, Lakewood roll bar and a few other goodies.
Just the start of things to come before the 383 Crossram and M22 go into this puppy. https://image.ibb.co/fe1MTA/IMG-1722.jpg https://image.ibb.co/caOqMV/IMG-1724.jpg https://image.ibb.co/eHGGvq/IMG-1728.jpg https://image.ibb.co/iy2d8A/IMG-1730.jpg https://image.ibb.co/g1zx1V/IMG-1733.jpg https://image.ibb.co/gOqbvq/IMG-1734.jpg https://image.ibb.co/iDLjFq/IMG-1736.jpg |
Looks great! I agree on dropping the front.
|
Graeme, nice!
|
Look's good!! Maybe just a little higher in the rear. Love those wheels...

Do you know what the original Cragar SS rim and tire sizes were?

And another picture that Gary shared with me this week. The Magnum wheels were on the car for a while back in the late 90's to early 2000's. I think these wheels make Nova's look like a quintessential factory muscle car. Classy yet meaningful. I'll probably mount a set of these when I'm finished playing with this car.

Graeme, I recognize that photo. That is at a local show here. I believe that is the rear parking lot of the Chevrolet Parma, Ohio plant where the employees park across the street from the actual plant. Every May a local car club here in the Cleveland area host a show there. Great picture!! I was probably at that show.

Steve, it very well could be.... LOL Rich |
I remember going to a little car show on 71, maybe Strongsville K-Mart, about 20 years ago. There was a nice, original black paint Copo Camaro, with white interior, 4sp-30k miles. Tried to buy it, offered what he thought it was worth. He thought about, but decided he wasn't ready. Nice car.
|
That was Brunswick K-Mart. A lot of us were “regulars” back then. I know the car very well, it’s moved on. This is still one of the largest, and oldest weekly get togethers. Once billed as the largest unorganized car show in the world. It’s roots go back to the 1960-70’s Manners Big-Boy and even Hot-Rod magazine.

That show/cruise inn holds very fond memories.. Lots of fun there!!

You guys are making me jealous. I grew up in Winnipeg where there's a huge car culture and street scene still to this very day. I moved west at 25 and found a hot Saturday night scene here in Calgary but that died off 20 years ago followed by the local track closing up 7 years ago.
Car shows are all that's left here and they bore me with so many late model cars showing up over that of the real muscle cars that are stowed away in urban garages. I wish there was still a street scene here. Smaller demographics over your major US cities and shorter seasons makes it a tough go. Ocean City, Pavillions, Street Machine Nationals, MCACN, SCR, Woodward, Pigeon Forge ETC ETC. For that I am truly envious. |
Big thank you to Mike Angelo for the complimentary Ed Stinn decals which arrived Friday. They'll be put to good use on this little Nova when I get it cleaned up. Been taking stock of what's needed to put some things back to stock. Looking for a clean engine bay harness, cowl panel and wiper arms, and it will need a complete inner heater core as that was removed for weight back in the day. Maybe once I add that and the new motor with those heavy orange headers, it'll add enough weight to drop the front end some. The Crossram will also help add some weight. Here's another picture I found with Cragar's on it. Should be picking up the Cragar"s from Sam next week.
https://image.ibb.co/gNK70A/Ed-Stinn.jpg (Thanks very much Mike. And you too Rich for the offer of the docs. Two great guys from this site) https://image.ibb.co/fUvQnq/7b7a540e...ee87bb68ea.jpg This was another shot Gary Cunningham took of the car when he had it. |
That thing looks so good with Cragars.

Graeme, I'll text you later today for your address and send you a nice care package of Stinn stuff.. Sorry I have not done same sooner. Work has been very hectic but I will have time this week..
Rich |
While waiting for some other parts to arrive for the Nova, I did receive a cool little care package from Rich (Mr. Chevy) earlier today. A complete set of dealership issued docs from Ed Stinn Chevrolet which will stay with the car now.
Thank you for all of this Rich. :beers: https://i.ibb.co/XkfJGZd/IMG-1917.jpg |
By chance...would anyone have any pictures of a Lakewood roll bar (Mounting Kit #54050) to fit 68-72 Nova. I have feet for a 69 Camaro #54010 and I'm wondering what difference there is between the 2 as they are likely similar? Hoping I can modify the mounts but curious as to how different the originals are to each other?
Best case scenario would be to find the mounting kit if anyone has one stashed away? |
