The only suspected JL8 car that isn't a Z/28 is an L65/4-speed w/A/C. It has no docs.

I believe it had a trailer hitch when discovered..therefore the JL-8 brakes. I was at Carlisle many years ago and there was a green L-78 car for sale for 3800 bucks. All original drivetrain. M-22, cowl hood, center fuel guage and no console. Had rust around the back window. The seller had all the paperwork including bus card of salesman that ordered the car. The car was ordered with JL-8, but arrived without that option. That must have been pretty common. I only had $3500 on me that day, but seller would not even accept a deposit, so I went back the next day with all the cash, but it was sold. Was wondering where that car is now. I spoke to the brother of the original owner of my real JL-8 Z. He told me that they went to the dealer to buy an advertised 69Z with the xram in the trunk, but when they saw the added cost of the xram(500 bucks he said), they decided to by the JL-8 car that was on the lot instead. The first week they went and bought an edelbrock xram because it was way cheaper than the GM setup. I imagine a vast majority of JL-8 cars were owner ordered and not sitting in dealer showrooms waiting for a buyer. Back to this car... a REAL BEAUTY !! |
Never understood why Chevy mentioned "...the new 'Vette type 4 wheel disc brakes" in Z/28 print ads when they were not ready at the start of '69 production.
What was the hang-up? All the engineering was done early in '68. JL8 is listed in the '68 Assembly Instruction Manual. Many of the parts were production Corvette. The rear axle shafts & housing had slight changes but nothing major. Maybe last-minute issues came up in testing. I believe that is why the wheels were revised [AD to YH] due to contact with the calipers in cornering. That change wasn't made until late December '68; earliest known car was built late February. |

I have owned 4 JL8 cars and 2 JL8 setups in years past, one of the setups came from a busk blue plaine jane 69 Camaro, all of the rest were on z28's or off of a z28

Wasn't there rumors of OJ Simpson's "gift car" being a big block JL8 ?
|
Kato Kaelin says he can't remember...
|
The early D90 stripe indicates the car was built no later than early November 1968, prior to the release of JL8. The complete photo shows the car was built with standard 14 x 7 wheels with hub caps so no JL8.
The purpose of the photo was OJ signing a promotional contract with Chevy. In another photo, he is posing with John De Lorean. De Lorean joined Chevy February, 1969. The car may have been a prop; no reason to believe OJ ever owned it. |
Where's the fuel gauge if this Z was ordered without a console?
|
The body number is somewhat of an indicator of when a dealer order was confirmed. This one was confirmed late December 1968, prior to the change in required equipment for Z/28.
|
The dash has a blank center plate where I expected to see the fuel gauge (post 5) So it was also ordered without a tach which was still optional at the time?

OJ's car is most likely an early LA car and my original stripe is exactly like the one in the pic where it continues down on the fender extension. My car is an 11A LA car

Popular Hot Rodding tested an L89 car in the April '69 issue. Believe it or not, still exists and was on ebay many years ago. Also an 11A car; L507834 w/2nd design D90 stripe.
Care to post your VIN? |
124379l508474 I still have pics of my original paint fenders and extensions somewhere. I replaced the front fender with NOS ones in May 1981 because they had rust holes the size of a quarter down at the bottom.
I copied that stripe exactly when my car was repainted in 1981, not even knowing there was a difference in striping. I continued that to today. |
That's interesting.
If I go by the theoretical build schedule, your car was final-assembled on or about November 13, 1968 with the 1st design stripe. L507834 was final-assembled on or about November 8, 1968 with the 2nd design stripe. Wonder if L507834 was held up in the bank and actually built later. It was a well-optioned car [$5400] with a rare engine. Thanks much! |

Whoopsie, my tag is 11B
My NCRS doc says GM official production date 11/14/68 zone 6, Dealer 257 Hallman Chevrolet, Reno NV On my cowl tag the LA scheduling code is H744 Body is LOS131674. Im actually wondering if mine was held up for some reason. |
NCRS is typically the shipping date. I have never seen any doc that had a production date on it. One of the CRG core members located about 200 dealer invoices for '69. Cars mostly shipped [68%] within 3 days of production.
If either was held up it would have been L507834. Can't imagine any other reason an earlier VIN would have had the later stripe. |
I was just going by whats typed on my NCRS letter. They call it Official Production date. So this is actually the shipping date? Thats good to know.
|
For the most part it is the same day or the next. But, not always.
|
The NCRS docs say production date and I believe that to be correct. My #1 '67 Z was built on 12-29-66 and not shipped until 1-13-67. I don't know why there was the delay in shipping but the other '67 Zs built at this time were also delayed for shipment. I have a document from Vince Piggins' files that shows the date ordered, date built, and date shipped and the NCRS document I got had the same production date that Piggins' document said.
|
It depends on what GM documents NCRS is using. It's my understanding they have accounting docs. If it is the dealer invoice GMAC generated, they may be assuming the ship date is the build date. The invoice does not list a production date.
I have two pages from a 1967 Canadian shipping report. It lists both dates. |
Just got my NCRS and it had a production date of 7-29, my NICB shows 7-30 shipped. Seemed normal to me.
BIG |
John DeLorean wrote a book about his time at GM and a good portion is devoted to his promotion to Chevy General Manager February '69. Chevy had just switched over to a new IT system for 1969 and it was a disaster. Some dealers were never billed for cars they received. That's why there is a big gap in the NCRS data for '69.
67 & 68 data seems ok. '69, not so sure. |
on the car shipper for an april built JL8 N631648
ship date of 4/22 Date of execution 4/23 GMAC note date of 4/28 Date interest from 5/18 IIRC 633599 (the black survivor Z) had a date of 4/23 from the NCRS paperwork. So I am |
