"Outliers were definitely the Mulsanne Blue LS6 at $180k and the Red LS6 at $240k. How do you explain the $240k?"
Very Easy, I can explain that in 5 words.....Chris White, simply the Best! Dan |
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
Some info for you that was shared with me by the marketing folks at Barrett-Jackson:
* 2017 Scottsdale sales totaled $102.4 million (unaudited)with a 99.5-percent sell-through rate-and raised nearly $2.2 million for charity during the Scottsdale Auction. * Barrett-Jackson consigned 1,719 vehicles, the most in the company's 46-year history, set 40 world auction sales records, including the sale of Kindig-It Design's 1965 Volkswagen Type II 21-Window Deluxe Bus (Lot #1315) that sold for $302,500. * The impressive Charlie Thomas Collection, featuring 146 vehicles, sold for a combined total of just over $1.7 million.(Or if you break it down to the average price he got per vehicle it was $11,644-this added by me) * Over 1,800 automobilia pieces sold for more than $2.5 million, including an extremely rare 1960s Esso Aviation porcelain neon airport hangar sign (Lot #9487), which sold for $82,250. * Approximately 320,000 people attended this year's auction * To date, Barrett-Jackson has raised over $93 million for local and national charities. The top cars sold in Scottsdale include: * 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (Lot #1397) - $1,485,000 * 1960 Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle (CERV) 1 (Lot #1390) - $1,320,000 * 1930 Duesenberg J Dual-Cowl Phaeton (Lot #1378) - $880,000 * 2005 Porsche Carrera GT (Lot #1396) - $616,000 * 1965 Shelby GT350 Fastback (Lot #1365) - $445,500 * Justin Bieber's 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia (Lot #1372) - $434,500 * 1963 Chevrolet Corvette 327/360 Split-Window "Fuelie" (Lot #1393) - $385,000 * 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 (Lot #1400) - $385,000 * 1932 Rolls-Royce Roadster (Lot #1382) - $341,000 * 2015 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta (Lot #1374) - $330,000 * 1964 Chevrolet Corvette LT1 (Lot #1399) - $330,000 |
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
Really cool buggy Charlie. Is that a one of a kind custom made one? I cannot imagine how fast it is with that drivetrain in something that light, whew.
Funny how that Kindig VW bus isn't even a real 21 window version. Is this the start of clones of those now? |

Considering the fact that many of them are bringing six figures now, I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. Another thing I would not be surprised to see is Burt Reynolds buying up clapped out mid to late 70's Trans Ams, paying someone $100K to restore them to a high level, and selling them for $200K+ |
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
I sorta think this is more of "THE REAL" market numbers and the inflated ones that we have grown to accept? I personally never have thought ANY of the SB Trans Am cars are worth anything near what people are asking! It's just the follow the leader type of thing. Or maybe one of the older guys HAD one when they were new, and now has the $$$ where is gets what he wants due solely to sentimental value.
One thing NO ONE has seem to touch on is, YES BJ is the BIG SHOW, BUT also there Scottsdale show IS THERE BIG SHOW??? So the FLA show the prices should be down another 15 to 20% from this one. I have been to BJ back in 2011 for a couple days, and new been to R&S so I can't comment. Need to see what the prices at some of the other major shows do to set prices? I also wonder if the reason the prices are dropping is the high dollar, BIG money collectors like Pratt and Thomas are dumping their collections and other big dollar guys might be doing the same, or NOT buying?? Again the "monkey-see, monkey-do" herd mentality? It's no longer fun or viable and the guys that WOULD overspend and set the benchmarks are not? This means the hobby might be reverting back to the upper-middle class cars guys to set more realistic prices? The Thomas 67 SS427 convert and Tom "Wilma's boys" Nova @ 67K, the $66K LS-6 Chevelle might just be the new benchmarks for for REAL value as that's what society is saying these are worth? The demographic is changing. The "younger" buyers, LIKE MYSELF who is only 50 yrs old, are not as emotional towards them as the older guys that might have had one, or seen them new and always wanted one. I know there are alot of people that do not like what I'm saying, SORRY. But I DO NOT feel, the "plain-Jane" COPO cars or the Boss 302, '69 Z28 or the Mopar 340 ^pack cars are worth any where near what people WERE getting for them. Then you can get into the whole NUMBERS MATCHING or BORN WITH debacle and is it REALLY BORN WITH or restamped????? |
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
When a car goes through the auction and the price is lower than expected ,most people say its because the market is down and this is the new market price/world we live in. When a car goes for a very high dollar amount, its stated that barrett jackson is full of drunks and speculators and doesnt reflect the real world pricing . Cant have it both ways.

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
It is hard to predict the influence of the Italian cars and the German cars (Porsche) going up so fast, as far as making some pause on buying a stock appearing musclecar. I do think it takes some money out of the tent that could have gone to 80-150K range musclecars.

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
----It seems as though you guys are putting too much emphasis on Scottsdale auctions, and B-J in particular. Its worth considering the two Mecum auctions (Kissimee and Indy) as a better market judge. I'm not saying Mecum is higher or lower but a bigger number of good cars to make a judgement on. I was just there and felt the cars overall were generally better quality than I used to see at B-J......Bill S

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
I have always felt that the Mecum results were more realistic. To me BJ just has a circus atmosphere. I went in 2013 and when the Batmobile crossed the block you couldn't even see the car with all of the "Look at me i'm on tv" people standing on the block

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
They are auctions...Prices are all over the place. There were great deals to be had if you were patient. That is what auctions are all about.
|
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
Bottom line is anyone selling a car will reference the highest price they can fuind at auction, and those in the market to buy will reference the lowest price they can find. Reality is somewhere in between.
|
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
auction prices are always going to be all over the place. I like iron clad documentation,

Your car was spectacular and the one I told my buddies that made the most sense out of all the Z's there. Rare combo of 4.10 gears, wide ratio box, and original drivetrain. Were you ever able to verify if an M20 was ordered with the car originally? |
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
I didnt go this year but watched alot, seems like Reggie J. (Mr October) sold alot of nice cars and was surprised they didnt bring so much

Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
Which Red/ Black Convert Top was painted just last year at
shop in BC Canada. Same Red/Blk LS-6 being written about at B/J How was paint ??? Owner/Seller of LS-6 related to me in Email how he felt shop gouged him on paint and small repairs. I want(ed) to take my 70 Z28 there for paint but shop owner quoted me very high price (even in CDN $$) |

I appreciate the man and his accomplishments, and the fact he is a car nut, but most of what I have seen at auction of his has been mediocre with only a few bright spots. Same with some of Hendrick's auction wares. |
Re: Barrett Jackson - Opinions?
----Chuck,,,If you are talking about the $240,000 red LS6 it was a hardtop.

Prices are to high. There are some exceptional cars that deserve more money. But as a whole things got out of control. I am sticking to that. |

I'd never do that. I'm an honest purist.
