Re: Orange/Orange Dale Chevrolet 1969 427 4SPD Camaro
The 8000 rpm tach was Z/28 only.

Re: Orange/Orange Dale Chevrolet 1969 427 4SPD Camaro
Years ago I went to look and try to buy the twin to this car that is Daytona yellow with a buddy in Iowa. Original owner car unrestored. He told us about the orange car next to it in the lot at Dale Chevrolet. 125k wouldn't buy it at the time. His had houndstooth interior also. Here's the kicker: He showed us the dealer window sticker, and Z-28 stripes were painted on it at the dealership before sale. He says the orange car was the same. Same car? Dave

Can't be; N651524 was never on the lot. The original owner bought it off the transporter. The yellow/yellow car [N661047] was built almost three weeks later and didn't sell until December '69. Four Dale L72 COPOs still exist; there were others. Depending on who you ask the others were silver, rallye green, Le Mans blue, orange. The rallye green car was supposedly raced since new, the Le Mans blue car may still be with the original owner. There is supposed to be another orange/orange, an automatic still in stock with the yellow car at the end of 1969. The dealership is long gone, nothing left but fading memories. |

Had Jerry MacNeish inspect our COPO this week, was a lot of fun learning all the stuff that is and isn't original to the car. After Jerry was finished we pulled the cover off the rear to see what was inside the BE rear end. Bad news was that the original COPO ring and pinion gears 3916226/28 have been replaced with standard 3862526/28 4.10 gears and are dated 2/70. Good news is that everything else inside the rear end is the original COPO specific parts including the 234 carrier, spider/side gears, spring plates and clutch springs. Jerry had zero doubts about the BE stamping.
Spoke to the original owner this afternoon to ask him if he ever had any rear end issues and he said the only warranty work the car had while he owned it was for a blown head gasket so the rear must have been worked on after he traded the car off in 71 or 72. Would love to find the second owner of our car to find out what happened to the 427 and rear end after Jim traded the car off to Soerens Ford for his new station wagon! |
Great news Chad!
Rare to find a COPO Camaro these days with the original BE still present. |
Thanks Bill. At least the old girl has one thing going for her!

What a great car and story I loved seeing it in the barn find section

Thanks protree68. Would love to see your cars, that's a mighty impressive list of rare survivors!!!

Couple friends have been on me about not driving the 69 since I've bought a couple other cars in the last year. Got it out today and cleaned it up this afternoon and took a few pics to post but I can't load any even though they are less than 1500x2500, what am I doing wrong???

Hopefully this works, I'm an idiot when it comes to technology. Think I figured it out and understand how pictures end up sideways.

Beautiful car Chad - another MCACN "barn find" alum!

The third owners Uncle Dave Fuchs, who painted the car back in the 70's found this picture today and sent it to me. Said it was taken in Watertown, WI a couple years after he painted it. Thank for the pleasant surprise Dave :)

The orange/orange Dale Chevrolet COPO has returned to Wisconsin for good.... After 25 years or more searching for this car, I still can’t believe it’s is in my garage.... Thanks Chad and Kandy, I will give it a good home...

Please don't restore it!

There are at least two more known Dale 9561 cars; N650469 Garnet Red and N650526 Fathom Green. Both 4-speeds with consecutive body numbers. People that worked there believe there were 8 total. They acquired two ZL1s directly from Fred Gibb; #7 and #49. Both still with us. They also sold two JL8 Z/28s: orange/orange [briefly owned] and a yellow/yellow RS. Orange car is not known, yellow car in GA last I knew.
All that in addition to many Z/28s, L78 Chevelles and Camaros. Also did a few "Dale Duster" 427 conversions. At one time, the largest Corvette dealership in the US. For 1970, they were a Yenko franchisee. They also sponsored a few race cars. When Chad and Kandy acquired the COPO in 2015, I introduced them to the original owners. We attempted to drum up some interest in putting together the history of the dealership. One of the sons is still with us as are several mechanics. They are well along in their years, memories have faded. The dealership buildings are long gone, now a vacant food store. My opinion, Dale Chevrolet should be right up there with Berger, Nickey et al as a legendary Chevrolet performance dealership. |
Agreed Bill, they certainly were one of the great performance dealers of the era. On my car, it had Z28 stripes painted on at the dealer. This was on the dealer invoice and other paperwork I got with the car. Do you know if any other 9561s got the stripe treatment? Hope all is well, Clint

I'm 20 miles from the Dale site and have been involved in the hobby for going on 45 years. It is rare to encounter a Dale car [know of one L78 Camaro] in the area. The people that worked there only recall the #7 ZL1, the house race car for a short time.
In addition to the Dale COPOs, Yunker Chev [35 miles] and Hult’s Chev [75 miles] were Yenko franchisees. There were at least 29 COPO Camaros, 6-8 COPO Chevelles and a 427 Nova or two sold in this area. Other than one Chevelle and a dozen or so Camaros, the remainder are in the wind. I’m certain that a few of them still exist in the area, parked for decades just like the orange/orange COPO. |
Congratulations Doug! Circumstances beyond my control led to the sale of this fabulous car but it was one heck of a ride while it lasted, my only regret is we didn't get the 427 back in it. Like Bill, I hope you don't restore it either but it's out of my hands now, I do want see some pics when the 427 is going back in it though, good luck!
