Well.......Dave and Greg came over today and helped out putting the engine in the car......Took all of about 5 minutes.....Now the fun starts......Andy cut off the trans mounts from the frame......got the cross member installed and tack welded the mounts back in.......Brent will do the final welding tomorrow....(he's a real welder....LOL).......On with the assembly.....

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
The leg is now getting back to normal and things are starting to move again.......Didn't say anything yesterday, but if you look at the picture below, you will see the front Chinese header bolt is missing......I was using a air ratchet to draw them in and the bolt as it was running down just snapped off.........Talk about getting pissed........That was a signal to go take a Nap.......It was in an accessible position, but getting the drill started in the center of the bolt to drill it out in an area that wasn't the best to see what you were doing.........went to the shop today and thought it thru....Made a bushing to go into the header flange with the metric tap drill size in it.......put it in and it centered the drill perfectly.....drilled thru the bolt and retapped the hole.......problem solved......

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Just about finished under the car.......By moving the trans cross member back a couple inches, it now made the E-Brake cable way too long.........had to cut it to suit and make a new stop feature for locking the cable........worked out perfectly.....

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
I had given Dewitt's the information on where the mounting holes needed to be on the radiator I purchased for my `65. Andy's radiator spacer should be the same. Dewitt's evidently did not save these measurements for the next job.

Yeah ,...........They were about a 1/4" off...........I had to elongate the holes to get it mounted......Hydra Boost show up yet ????? |
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
The Hydra Boost set up has not shown up as of yet. I'll be calling on Monday. Almost six weeks since I placed the order. They must be in demand. Hope it gets here soon. I want to really get a chance to drive my Impala before it needs to be tucked away for winter.
|
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Where are you purchasing the Hydraboost from? I'm contemplating the same, and what brake set-uo do you have?
|
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Is the hydroboost a modified version or a stock application for some recent car?
|
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Here you go..........Steve....Don't know........But, My Impala now stop like an Indy Car...........
http://www.hydratechbraking.com/ |
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Andy, the Hydraboost setup I purchased is from Hydratech. The unit is built specific to your car. As far as brakes go, I've got a pretty basic front disk conversion kit that I installed on my `65 years ago. I do not remember who I got it from. With the cam that comes in the 480hp LS3 there's just not enough vacuum to use a vacuum brake booster. The Hydrabooster should solve the brake issue.
|
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Yeah, that looks like they modify and adapt an existing application to fit your setup. The actual boost unit itself looks just like the one in my '95 diesel Suburban. I had to replace the 'burb's unit a month ago after 134,000 miles of good service, and only because it started dripping from a rear seal.

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Upadate.........Got Lucky and found a upper Radiator hose that fit perfectly......Got the Air Intake set-up completed with fittings for the PCV system and MAF sensor.........and Got the power steering hose made and installed, along with the reservoir.......started on getting the fan relay's wired and installed......Moving along..........

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Great looking car and love the swap threads. Im sure you know this but in the past when doing LS swaps I would back fill the engine through the upper rad hose to help with getting the t-stat to open and allow circulation due to air being trapped in the system. Had it happen more than once with an engine going over 220 and it not opening and it would work every time.

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
I noticed a possible issue with the driveshaft. I have always been led to believe to install/index the zerk fitting on the compression side of the yoke to prevent breakage -- it appears to be opposite in the photos. If I am wrong -- someone holler at me!! TAZ
|
Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
I was told the zerk fittings are always suppose to point towards the tube (for what that's worth).

Re: Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
Got the radiator hoses completed......got the steam port line in......Filled the system with coolant....... (No leaks.....That's a good thing)....LOL......got the PCV system installed.....Got the wiring roughed in for the Fan Relays.....(Thanks Donnie)...The car is being flat bedded to the exhaust shop for the system to be installed tomorrow........The Dakota Digital Cluster and modules will be arriving tomorrow also........After the exhaust, I need to spend about a hour finishing the wiring under the hood and about a day getting the Dakota stuff installed..........Getting real close...
