No, it doesn't need a full resto, just doing an under hood detail and rebuilt the engine, the engine had some paint flaking in a few spots, some small parts were getting dingy looking, installed new clutch, etc,

what clutch did you choose Mike?

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

We have an AC Delco dealer near us, so I used an AC Delco original equipment clutch, it comes as a kit w/ throwout bearing, pilot bushing, & allignment tool, I installed a pilot bearing in place of the bushing, installed a new GM Clutch fork,
I aligned the bellhousing with my Browell Tool before the clutch went on.

very good choice! Easy to use with no issues.

Just curious. I have aligned bell housings, but all the 403's I checked were right on. Did you have to move anything on this one?

miket1 10-30-2015 01:42 AM

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

No Lynn I didn't have to move it any, My 403 was right on within .002

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

Pulled the dist. I noticed it had too much vertical movement, shimmed it to .015 vertical movement which helped stabilize the timing, recurved the timing w/ the vacuum line plugged so it is mechanical advance only, as I have done since 1970, installed a stop bushing so it can advance 17 degrees,
it has 38 degrees total timing all in at 2700 rpm, and 21 degrees timing at idle ,this cam likes the 21 degrees at idle, really helped smooth it out.
It cranks over easily & starts up instantly
This thing is coming around, idling nice at 1000-1100, very crisp on throttle response,
Vacuum is low at 5in.at 1100rpm idle, but comes up to 14-15in at 1800rpm., at cruising speed it should be fine.

Hi Mike,

A guy once spent a LOT of effort working though the intricacies of a -140 cam on Team Camaro. If you've got the time, here's the tread: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=155736

I run the -140 in my 302. Very cool to see someone tinkering with the old cam again! Hope you get her dialed in.

Nick

Those 302's can have all the cam they want but ya gotta give it some gearing or you will not even be able to pull away from a stop sign.
Most important part in making a a SBC run is found under the trunk floor.

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

Thanks for all the info. and comments, the 140 is dialing in nicely since making several small adjustments, since I recently retired I have time to do what I like, such as detail my Camaro a bit, build & tune engines ,rebuild 12 Bolt rear ends, buy & sell early Camaro parts, rebuild Bravo outdrives on powerboats, and lots of other stuff that keeps me busy.
Thanks for the info. on Camaros.net forums, I will check it out.

Nope, the ring and pinion. Point is, gearing is what really helps a SBC perform.
Many want big cams, big carbs etc. and often overlook the gearing for the little motors.

I have a set of 4;10 & 4;56 gears on the shelf I may try a 4;10 first

go to the .56's. I have no issues and I drive mine.

Try the gears you have on the shelf but Richmond make's New 4.33 gears also.

The 68 Z I used to drive had 5.38's. Running kick down on the street at any speed up to 100 was just plain easy.

With an M-20 trans the 3.73's would not be bad off the line, but with M-22 or 21, agree would be a sluggish combo.

I agree... my 68Z has 3.73's and with the M21 it's not the ideal combination off the line. However, after refreshing the original engine I installed a nasty SBC from American Speed and a Tremec TKO. Problem solved.

The 302/M21 are safe and sound in my garage.... & I drive the hell out of the car now without worrying about the original drive train.

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

I currently have 3;73 w/M21, I may try an M20 before changing gears.

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

The M20 is better suited for hard pulls. The M21 is a road race trans.

Salvatore 11-09-2015 08:56 PM

Re: Horsepower for 69Z 302 w/#140 cam

Originally my car came with 4.10's and an M21. I installed a set of 4.56's and put an M20 trans in. Felt like a different motor.
