Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
With M22Mikey's inspiration, I decided to keep at it and eventually, all the wires ended up attached to something. Go figure, everything works!!! I know, I should just end here and sell it. But, seein's how I'm on the home stretch I might as well just finish it up. All the wiring is routed where it needs to be, and now that I tested it all I can go back and wrap it all up in the old tyme style asphalt covered cloth wrap. Inner fenders are painted and mounted up, and the gastank is in.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...539-wire32.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...40-wire234.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...46-gastank.jpg I added an old Delco style decal to the battery (which I mounted in the engine bay like a later style) and will be making a custom over for the top that'll feature the fill caps. With the inner fender mounted, I could route the wires where I wanted them to go and sort of see how the whole package is looking in the engine bay. Now, time to hide that heater valve and newer style heater... Cheers Dave |
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Don't be worrying about the left over holes in the firewall, and the surface rust on the u-joint on the steering column. All will be taken care of! Sooooo..in wanting to make sure no aftermarket things are staring you in the face, I decided to hide the GenII Heat/Defroster behind the old beehive heater cover. Also, I mounted the heater control valve right beside the core and made a cover that's attached to the original one. I painted this in the old hammertone finish, and added the Recirc Decal too! I'll add another one that has the part number on it. Why not? I'm getting all dorky with mixing all the years up, might as well max out on the dorkness! I'm not sure if that's a word or not, so we'll move on. I mounted the controls for the heater in the dash and will eventually replace those knobs with the maroon ones that match the cowl vent and shifter handle. I think it'll tie in the whole dash. The column will be painted black. I just haven't gotten there yet!

I'm not done with the details on the aluminum trim panels yet. I need to hand paint the logos on all three panels, then clearcoat it. The defroster ducts round up and out of the top of this heater cover so they aren't see when you look inside. Cheers |
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
And since I have the '49 truck to finish up, my '69-1/2 A12 Super Bee to restore (with a deadline 1yr away!), and a mezzanine to build in the shop in December, what's one to do? Buy another truck, that's what!!!!! I found this little gem out in Denver and it's 100% rust free. It's the last year for the Art Deco style trucks, 1946. This just gets driven around until the Bee is done next year. Or I find a good Saginaw 4spd to swap into it to make it an easier driver. And paint so it's shiney....maybe some new bed side stake wood......a 12V conversion.....so yeah, nothing planned immediately. Thanks guys! I was able to round out last month on a productive note with the interior just about buttoned up! The doors are complete minus the glass, window channels, and door panels. All that's left inside is the headliner, door panels, gas pedal, parking brake pedal, and to paint the steering column. I'm still searching out a radio and think I have it narrowed down to one.

Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
I am digging this thread too! I have a 51 3100 basket case and like to see how these go back together. One question though, I thought the entire interior gets painted with something close to the seat fabric. Yours looks like primer. What's your plans for it?
|
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Thanks Guys! Kevin, the entire interior does get painted the same color (dash, floors, doors) but it doesn't match the seat upholstery. The door panels matched the seat upholstery, but the headliner did not. In your case, the 51 got a Dark Burgundy seat upholstery with either one of two interior shades: Medium Tan Metallic Chrome or Dark Tan Metallic Chrome. Any remnants in your interior to see what color it originally was is your best bet.
For me, I am using a little "artist interpretation" on the color. I decided with the Blue exterior and such, I wanted a lighter interior and I wanted the dash to have a tad more "pop" than a standard one does. Yet, I wanted the seat upholstery to be a contrast to the interior and the exterior as far as tone. I've seen these trucks with the same color everything inside and it just looked a little "blah" to me. My idea originally was a little bit more of a darker gray, and I was looking through the paint books at the supplier's store this gray is the one I chose based on the chip. It's a tad lighter than I thought after mixing, but now that I have it done it's not bad. It's single stage and yeah, almost has the same tone as the primer I used! But, the seat frame is a darker gray as will be the headliner and door panels. Not so much that they stand out, but just a soft tone difference that draws your eye in with more to look at. So couple that with the dark seat, a black floor mat, and blue dash and I think it'll tie in well. I kept my idea with the interior panels not being all exact from a 68 Charger I restored a few years ago with a Metallic Blue interior. The interior parts were originally supplied from various vendors, so one supplier's Metallic Blue wasn't quite the same as another supplier's Metallic Blue. As a result, kick panels, door panels, A-pillar trim, were all various shades of Metallic Blue. Hope that answers your questions!!! The VCCA has good info on the AD trucks, and there's plenty more info out there for sure. Now pick up the LMC Catalog and start into that truck!!!!! Cheers |
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Great looking Truck!! I love the mix of the old and new, esp the heater box. Hope the interior goes well, I had a Hell of a time putting a headliner in a 56 Ford truck a friend & I restored. Looked a lot easier then it turned out!!

Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Alrighty, so a few set back and a few advancements. Wiring complete: Key on and a crank for starting {pop} {CLUNK}. Hmmmmmmmmm...mmmhmmm. This just all worked last week, I touched nothing, then come back a few days later and I'm greeted to a bowl of Rice Krispies (snap, crackle and pop). Oh, let me try this (wiggle, wiggle, tighten, loosen)...{pop} {CLUNK}. Hmmmmmmmm.....Well, that wasn't it. Oh, silly me, it was this thing right here. Let me get in here..and...(wiggle, loosen, tighten, kick)....{click, click} {POP} [CLUNK}. Well, that's all I know how to do, time to go home. So as tribute to Patton, I regrouped, pulled out what little knowledge I keep in my electrical encyclopedia, and then had another go at it. The result? SUCCESS!!! {VRRROOOMM!!!!!) As simple as it sounds, it was the addition of two more chassis/frame/engine ground wires that caused all the issues. I blame this squarely on M22Mike. Why I don't know, but I'm of the generation that it's never my fault and I have to blame someone, so it's on him! But then Lake Superior started to form on the intake manifold at the front two water jackets. So with that, A new direction for the engine: Power Pack time! I ordered an Edelbrock and matching Performer intake to remedy this leak. I pulled the intake and found two hairline cracks on both the front water jacket ports. Not sure how they got there, but no matter. After detailing up the new parts, the engine was back together and running good with no leaks! I made it look like an older Carter carb and now that's it's a 4bbl, it'll be a Power Pack optioned truck! Since I have a 700R4 in there, this provides a nice place to mount the TV cable as well. Something I was still pondering with the older intake. The heater hoses will be fastened with a few backets (the zip ties are just temporary right now). I think it all still ties in nicely. I removed the electric choke and will add the manual choke lever that routes to the dash, and then wrap the harness up. Time for some bodywork...

Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Oh, and before I forget, that large "75" was on the firewall when I got the truck and was actually etched into the paint. I have seen various numbers on the firewall from AD trucks built from the Janesville Plant. What they mean, I'm not sure, but I added the number back so before and after photos still have the number there! Alrighty, from a previous thread, someone commented about Yenko.Net ID tags for this year's upcoming MCACN show. In keeping with being Green and helping out the Planet Earth and all, I never took mine off from last year. Matter of fact, I still have my MCACN lanyards and tickets too! I think I can make that 2014 look like a 2015 with some creative Crayola'ing!!! Nobody will notice. Especially when I create a distraction and run into the crowd kicking and screamin, "I'M IN!!! I'M IN!!!" Ahem...where was I? Oh yeah! Fenders! Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
I use PPG paints, and this was single stage shot with a 1.5 tip out of my DeVilbiss. It calls for a 4:1:1, but I didn't use the reducer and it flowed nice. Shot the bed that way along with the wheels and very happy with the results. Booth is a pseudo - cross ventilation and it worked well keeping dust out and overspray hanging around was minimal. Sweat drips, on the other hand....:-(. I still need to hit this with some 1500-3000 and a light buff, but still happy with it.
Dave -- was that a PPG single-stage urethane, acyrlic enamel, etc. ?? Thanks -- Craig |

Craig, I use DCC Acrylic Urethane single stage but have also used the Shopline brand as well with no issues. All the cleaners and such are the Shopline brand due to a simple factor of $, and I don't recall a paint job I've done ever failing due to an of brand wax/degreaser. More updates later this week! Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Thanks Dave -- appreciate the response. I've shot a bunch of DuPont colors over the years and now that they have gotten out of the paint business, I am looking for feedback from the troops here. For "economical" paint, I really liked Centari with gloss improver/hardner -- but now that is history.
The color on your truck really came out great -- I will check out the product you used. Again -- THANKS! Craig |
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
I took a break from blocking out the dinner table that is the hood, and started to get a '51 3100 I built a few years ago for a friend ready for the Autorama here in Houston the weekend of Thanksgiving. Busy week! MCACN the weekend prior, then the Autorama the weekend after!! SO MUCH FUN!!! So the '51 is was a custom build: boxed frame using my own CNC designed frame rails, Mustang II front end, S-10 4x4 rear axle on custom perches using Mopar 440-Hemi leafs, 5.3 Vortec from an '06 Tahoe, 4L60E trans, PS, PDB, A/C, Tilt, I made the console to have a unique feature using the old Beehive heater cover and installed power ports and the I-Pod jack for the radio in the doors. I designed the bedside wood and it's rolling on Diamondback Radials on 15" Artilley wheels. It's Base/Clear, and I will be cutting and buffing it next week. It needs a few things detailed up before the show, but it's all minor stuff. Not sure what hapenned with the column, but it started to flash rust. Funny, since it's satin with a clear coat. Oh well, time to sand it down and paint it!!! Enjoy!

Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Thanks Guys! Alrighty, back to progress. Running boards and splash shields mounted up! I'm going with a polished stainless step plate, but I'm not sure where to install it on the running board. I figure I'd ask everyone in my little shop complex to help out. I'll let them all enter the truck and see where the majority step on the running board to enter the vehicle. Now, taking into account who's bias to what lead (do they step first with the right foot, or the left?? ), the demographics of the people in the shop (Those Dodge guys don't seem right..so not sure how reliable there data may be. And then there's the Buick people.... ), and of course, the Earth's rotation with the Corrioulous effect thrown in for good measure, that should give me a good idea as to where the step plate should be. Or, I'll just see where all the scratches wind up and put it there so I don't have to paint the running board again!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-dscn0447.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-dscn0451.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-dscn0437.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-dscn0449.jpg You can also see that the front bumper filler panel and running board splash guards have been wetsanded and I was just getting ready to pick up the buffer. There was more trash in those things than the public landfill!!! But, once down to 3000 grit, it's all out and smoooooottthhh! Also, parking brake is installed, cables routed, and everything hooked up. I also trimmed up the floor mat. I need to still install the sill plates and floor mat extensions, and also, I'll be adding some carpeted floor mats with stays so they don't slide around too much. I'm pretty certain they never came with them, or if they did they were probably a .70 cent option, but I think it'll finish off the floor nicely! Cheers |
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
And as of today the hood is freshly painted and the fenders are on deck. Once the fenders are done, that's it! No more paint!!!! I'm pretty sure I'll have to ask the same group of running board volunteers for help mounting up this clamshell. I'm scared to move it tomorrow let alone mount it on the truck!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3732-hoodl.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3733-hoodr.jpg More to come! Cheers |
Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
It's official: Paint....DONE! Here's the fenders mounted up and looking snazzy! Now the order of assembly is lower splash panel, grille, upper radiator panel, and while assembling all these parts, see how many scratches I can make on each panel! Always a challenge but somehow I always seem to meet my goal. Just like my 401K/Stock motto: Buy high, sell low. I always seem to meet it!

The fender holes do not line up very well (surprise!) since it's an aftermarket grille, but I'll massage it into position when I get back. Later this month will be a wrap of the engine harness and finalize the engine bay details, then I can install the hood! More to come... Cheers |

Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
We landed from MCACN Monday, and Tuesday I loaded up and headed downtown for the Autorama here in Houston. This is my set up for the 1951 3100 I built for a friend a few years back. He's not doing very well health wise, so I took the time to enter this truck into the show this year to lift his spirits! I really don't care if I win anything except a big smile on his face!!!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...126_143725.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...126_143644.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...126_143657.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...125_131042.jpg The vineyard, crates of wine bottles, and the pail of corks in the bed all have LEDs in them for some added pop. His callsign in the USAF was "Rocket" so I stenciled in "Rocket Winery" on the sides of the crates and made it look as if it was branded in with a hot iron. Hope you like! Re: 1949 Chevrolet 3100 - V8 Prototype
Time to turn my attention to the bed side wood. Add with all the trucks I've done, it's my own design that I think looks great against the lines of the truck. So with saws out and the First Aid kit standing by, I started the assembly.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-dscn0846.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-dscn0850.jpg As you can see, precise measurements and exact dimensions and tools need to be used here. .. |

Well, a quick trip around the shop building. Tomorrow I go for the exhaust and hopefully the radio and hood emblems come in! Not much left! Woohoo! Cheers |

I'll be staining the slats to match the bed wood Friday as well as starting to wetsand and buff. I'm hoping for a nice photo shoot Saturday! More to come this weekend!
