Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Well, I’ve had this car for about two months now and just wanted to chime in. I targeted this car when I was 12 years old and saw it in the May 1986 issue of Car Review. This is the car that taught me about the Z24 option, one year only Royal Plum, and the rare headrest option. Since then, I’ve been looking for one of these, but never found one I liked more. The headrests really help the parchment interior do the job of making the Royal Plum ‘pop’. The overall originality, numbers, and docs don’t hurt either.
I found out about six years ago that the car ended up in Philly. Don was a great owner for this car. Despite his obvious technical ability, he avoids the temptation to upset the originality of a car. He understands and appreciates the things that make a car original. It’s clear that his specialty is cars with excellent pedigree. If you find a car that you want and Don is the one selling it, buy it. These Impalas don’t tend to get the respect that the Camaros and Chevelles get regarding originality. It is very fortunate that the car that I saw in 1986 ended up in the hands of a knowledgeable and able caretaker. Thanks to Don, this car wasn’t ruined as many have been. My brother is the one who originally bought the magazine in 1986 and we have spoken of this car many times over the years including recently when I told him I saw it for sale at Carlisle. This Thanksgiving, I told my brother to wait with his video camera at the end of my parents’ street to film me showing up in one of my other cars. He didn’t know that I had bought this. I wanted his reaction on film. It paid off. It’s embarrassing to see what jackasses my brother and I are on camera (or off camera, for that matter), but here goes. Do you think he was surprised? I thought he was going to slide into the car in the driveway when he backed it in. Do you think don ever god rove the car in the snow?
|
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Normally, I'd never drive it in the snow. It was a one time only thing. Had to be done. As far as Don, he drove it harder than I ever will. He knows how to enjoy his cars.

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Cool story Guys. Having owned a 1968 L-72 427-425hp 4-speed Biscayne back in the day as a kid and my best friend Billy owning a 69 427 -385hp Caprice I've always been a fan of full size Big block Chevy vehicles. Nice car , nice story. The video surprising your brother tops it all off. :headbang:

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
If Zilla is Danny, there are videos on Youtube of him enjoying the car. One is called "Late for Dinner".

Ha ! That is hilarious. Your brother is like Rainman. He knows the guy that owned it in the magazine and the year it was in the magazine. That was perfect and well worth driving it in the snow... Ha !!!!

That video is hilarious Jeff. And Charley you are spot on about his brother. Anyone who knows him will tell you that Jeff and his brother Greg (the videographer) are 2 of the most enthusiastic car guys you will ever meet. Congratulations on your newest acquisition my friend it looks and sounds awesome in the video.
I can't wait to see it in person. Tell Greg I'm disappointed, not once did he say (that's incredible!) One of his old and trusted go to sayings when he's excited. I kept waiting for it in the video but...... See you soon buddy, Chris |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Thanks pal. Charley nailed it, didn't he? Greg is the Rainman.

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Thanks, Chad. I need a new target car. I'm thinking another LS6 or ......... a 1969 Hurst Olds!!!

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Jeff, great video! What cam and exhaust are on the car there? Congrats again on it. One of the best 67s out there, and nice to have another Z24 in New England.
|
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Steve, Thanks. Don definitely put a higher overlap cam in it. Don't know the specs. Exhaust is stock aftermarket without resonators.

Jeff, there is a triple black Ls6 survivor (automatic) going thru Mecum auction. Check it out. Chad |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Love it! The survivors seem to be coming out of the woodwork.
As far as a 69 Hurst Olds, I remember seeing a stellar survivor at Carlisle in about 1997 or 98. I remember reacting to how 'day one' mint the glass, paint and interior were. The car seemed barely used. I would like to know where that one ended up. |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
That was a great vid and that is an awesome car. When are you letting your brother drive it?
And not that it matters, but I like that hood stripe sold white. Rich |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Yeah, he can drive it when the weather gets good up here.
I mentioned to Don that I was going to change the lace patten to a solid stinger and he said he would do it for me before I picked it up. I like it because it looks like something Chevy would have done. Just like the Vette. The side stripes are a Z24 only option (only 200 cars had them). Pretty sure this car did not have them originally. Don put them on and I like the look. Helps the Plum stand out. |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
One of the coolest SS cars Chevy ever made, and the best 67 color.
That video cracked me up, Rainman, to much ! Mike |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Well done. No one had mentioned the painted house. It looks great also.

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
I’m looking for some opinions……
There is one interesting unknown about this car that Don pointed out to me. It had a hood tach on it at one time. Not a Dixco, but a Delco unit that required the big hole. The GM harness is still in the car and the hood shows evidence of the big hole for the Delco unit. Don seemed to think the hole pattern was for the taller 1967 style, not the later style. Given that the car was ordered with all the performance options and several other items, but not U14 (tach, gauges), it is reasonable to assume that the person who ordered the car, whether it be the first owner or the dealer, planned on installing the hood tach immediately upon receiving the car at the dealer. If I can be convinced that this was the case, I will reinstall it. (There is also evidence of another ‘day one’ dealer mod to this car concerning the sound system). I don’t know if someone threw an old 1967 tach on the hood in the early seventies. The car was repainted in the early 80s and that’s when the hole was patched. Supposedly, the owner who had the car painted in the early 1980s still has the tach. I am writing him a letter. Besides the Cherokee Camaro, which has a tach that is probably custom silk screened “Chevrolet”, I have only seen Pontiac and Buick labeled hood tachs. I’ve also seen AC labeled ones. I’ve seen Chevy some tuner cars with the Pontiac tach. I wonder what version is the most likely for a Chevy dealer to install in 1967? While I’m sure this 2-bolt main hydraulic lifter car is not a tuner car, I am interested in finding out more about some of the more common dealers that thrived on selling GMs line of bolt-on accessories. Has anyone ever seen a dealer installed hood tach on a Chevy outside of the tuner-car world? Could this car be from a dealer that liked to put these on several of their cars? I’m hoping I can trace some early owners and find some more docs, but for now I must speculate. The earliest known location of the car was it’s sale at Carlisle in 1979. It might be from the Pennsylvania, New York area. I would like to find out if there is any evidence that the tach was put on the car at the dealer and would love to luck out and find out what dealer that was (regardless of the tach situation). Tachs and dealers. Thoughts everyone? |

Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
My brother-in-law had an article about a plum 1967 SS427 pinned up in his garage that really got my attention back in the day, but I think that was early 80's? I recall the article saying that besides all the performance attributes the SS427 has... sometimes you like to just sit and listen to it idle. Wow, how true!
Awesome car, and great video capturing the moment! |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Couldn't you run the VIN thru the NCRS program to get original dealer info??
|
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
My understanding is that they are only doing Chevelle, Nova, and Camaro shipping records. I should contact them and see if I can pay extra or something. It might be worth a try.
|
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
Found this on their website.
"NCRS does not plan to handle Corvair or full size Chevrolet at this time. Our resources are limited and we believe we have focused on a major segment of the Chevy collector car hobby. This population size alone has been a significant challenge. At this time we do not expect to offer other GM brands such as Pontiac, Oldsmobile or Buick." Like how many Impala and Corvair guys are really gonna flood their inboxes? Ridiculous. |
Re: 1967 SS 427 Impala Real Z24 4 speed
The money is in Corvette, Camaro and Chevelle dealer records. Big car and Corvairs not so much. Once they get through the first three and things slow down they'll probably happily take your money for Impala and Corvair docs.
