So the original owner was Harry Mann's Grandson? Jim and I have been playing phone tag and have not had a chance to chat yet. FWIW, the L88 is going to stay! Tim |
Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
I thought the original Safest Rust Remover which he used performed better on the shower method. -Didn't foam as much as Evapo-rust which is a copy of SRR.

Hey Tim, can you take a video of the L88 running and maybe a few short revs? I'd love to hear that original L88 with headers...
Thanks, Dan |

Undercarriage is CLEAN! Get that goofy coil spring spacer out of there...it will cause the coil to snap eventually....

Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
Remember to heat up the derusting liquid. The warmer it is, the better/faster it works. I used a waterproof aquarium heater and just plunked it down at the lowest point in the kiddie pool with a brick on it to keep it submerged.

Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
I used Metal Rescue with a $10 Harbor Freight pump to swish the fluid around in the container I used to de-rust some rims. Worked great. Some great tricks here.

Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
Nice! What is your air temperature out there? The stuff works a lot better when it, and the ambient temperature are warm.
If you cover the kiddie pool with a plastic sheet and put the sump in the bottom, it allows for the liquid to gather and flow down into one main spot instead of a big flat bottomed kiddy pool. Picture a swimming pool cover after a rainstorm, all the water gathers in the center. Takes much less liquid to do the job. Less evaporation, too. Also, the process really works better if you steam clean and/or degrease everything first. You get much less contamination of the liquid and more clean surface area for the anti-rust liquid to attack. |
Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
I have the shop @ 72 degrees. I also have a heater in the solution and that ranges from 71 to 76 (depending where in the pool it is)

Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
The rust remover process did not work as well as I thought is would. I can only assume it is due to dirt.
http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...psa012387c.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0de60ec7.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...ps11f80610.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...pse80b2992.jpg I then started to clean the wheel wells and degrease the front control arms. I suppose a gentle steam cleaning will take this quite a bit further. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0ed22b19.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...ps719d4521.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...pse43f3b19.jpg |
Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
I see improvement. Consult with the master: Sensa NJ Steve for details on how to get the biggest impact. Thanks for taking us on your transition!

Re: Harry Mann 68 L78 / L88 Camaro
You really have to do the steam cleaning/degreasing first. All that dirt and oil contaminate the derusting fluid and render it inert before it can even get a chance to work. That was why I pressure washed the underside of my car first. It cleans all the contaminants off of your parts and provides a clean (non oily) area to work with.
Any oil on the parts basically acts as a protective shield preventing the derusting liquid from touching the surface. If I were you I would rent a steam cleaner or a pressure washer (using hot water) and then buy a new batch of derusting fluid. What does it say on the shampoo bottles? LATHER, RINSE, REPEAT. Wilma very cool car!! </div></div> You are correct. Kinda surprised me for a 25k car. Judging from the caked on grease from one side to the other, it must have been that way from early on. Tim |
