From 10 feet you would think you are going to fall into this paint job. But when up close you see years of patina. You just can’t duplicate that look. Here is a couple I took before loading the car up.

Hi, can you shed some light about the unique '64 Malibu SS available in May or June of 64.
327 / 365 horse solid lifter engine package with 4 speed only.
I recently looked at one , same owner past 40 years looks very original and untampered with.

The 300 hp 327 was available in June 1964.
This subject has been discussed on Team Chevelle.
Here are the links.

I always wondered if any 1964 L-76 Malibu Super Sports were ever made.

I don't proclaim to be all-knowing, but I seriously doubt that this car ever came from the factory that way. Late in the 64 model year, the 300hp 327 became available on the Chevelle. There have been occasional rumors about the existence of higher hp versions of the 327 in the 64 Chevelle, but to my knowledge there has been no substantive proof of same.

EDIT: oops, I see Tory has already linked some of the many discussions on Team Chevelle about this subject.

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79

I didn't read the links to the Chevelle site, so this might be a repeat. The Chevy production records I have indicate there were 1737 300hp 327s built in the '64 Chevelle. (a few more for export) There is no production record of any L-76 produced. It was obviously "planned" though because Chevrolet's Finger Tip Facts book for '64 (which every salesman used for ordering information & specs) does the list the L-76 as available in the Chevelle. So, it's confusing but I'd go with the actual production records published by Chevy which state none were built.

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79

I had forgotten that I posted that list of RPOs. I also have a list of model year total production of each option but I'm hesitant to post it due to copyright law. I've tried to reach the owner of the information for permission to no avail. Suffice to say (repeating) that no L76 production is listed for Chevelle.
Since that is a list of "RPO" installed options, I doubt it would contain any COPO cars.

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79

As most know I put this car back together for Barry. Just about everything mechanical is new. He had the motor and transmission all redone. All new interior. A lot of NOS trim parts were installed. The car is rock solid, the floors are perfect. I fixed 2 small holes in trunk area. Someone put half quarters on car years ago but no cracks or visible damage shows. We decided to put the car back together leaving the old paint on it for that old patina look. I buffed the car out and was amazed at how well she cleaned up. From 10 feet you would think your were going to fall into the black paint. But up close it shows all the old patina. The car would be a perfect sleeper car. A car to go out and have fun with. With 4:11 gears I bet she will pull hard. If your looking for a solid original car to get some attention at your local cruises or drag strips this car will do that for you.

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79

Paul,
Sorry,
No pics as of yet.
I'm still waiting to confirm some details on the car.
I'm believing this is a 365 horse car.
After digesting the team chevelle info and a standard timeline of options as far as the 300 HP availability.....those guys seem to be peating and repeating printed public conjecture compiled over 45+ years.(the old, its in print from 40 years ago, and reprinted, so it must be true) syndrome.

I have seen documents and have viewed cars built Way Before the standard time line with 300 hp, 4 speeds.
From what I've found , with no questions of restamping or adding a non known casting date components.......
The Car I inquired about is a June of '64 built 327-365 solid lifter, M20,12 Bolt 3:31 posi., in dash tach car with a few more options. Its coded and vin stamped as such for this Hdtp. SS.
As I dig deeper, Chevy didn't advertise these as they were intended to be Only a short run for 1 month of production. The first impression I made was Chevrolet had more 327 solid lifter engines on hand that weren't selling fast enough in the Corvettes......Rumors were running rampant of the new 396 engines for Vette and Chevelles pending.
The owner of this 64....is the second owner, the car came from a Western, Pa. Performance/ Corvette Dealership. I've known of it for 36 years , yet , have only seen it 3 times.. (all in the privacy of its garage spot) .
More info pending as I get it.....I'm pursuing to purchase this , one egg shell at a time. No conversations have taken place of selling any car as yet. The owner has 12 other 64-65 Chevelles I know of .. has more he hasn't talked about yet....;-)

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79

Back in 1964, Hot Rod Magazine had a '64 El Camino project car that they claimed was a 365 HP car. If I remember correctly, they actually had Chevrolet replace the 365 HP motor for something more mundane for trailering. Somebody that has an early magazine collection could look this up. My mag collection is gone or I would.

Re: 1965 Chevelle L79

It is my understanding that the 12 Bolt was used starting in the 1965 model year. The earliest housing I have seen was late September 1964. I am very curious to see the foundry date on the center section of the housing.
