Car show with voting with ballot papers.
"He who has the most friends win" I went to a Mopar only Springfling show here in Toronto Canada with my Mopar National and Carlisle "Best in class E body" former champion 70 R/T S.E Challenger and everyone was surprised when a modified with weld wheels 74 Challenger won. Later I found out the owner was part of the club that sponsored the show Oh the politics of a car show some times. They will never get my support again. |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Lots of people at these cruises don't even know what they are looking at. I had more attention with the stupid repro window sticker than the car itself sometimes.. Those windows stickers draw more attention and people. Then you get the stupid comments about how the car was only three grand, twenty eight hundred, or whatever new back then. I would tell people that was a lot of money back in 69 or 70... Then you always heard, "I will give you that for it now, HA HA". Yeah real funny...
Needles to say I ditched the window sticker asap... Rich |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I think some of the most enjoyment I get at cruise nights is from the couple that are truly clueless. I mean that in a good way too. Some don't know a Chevy from a Ford much less a 68 from a 78. They get pulled in like a moth to a light and admire your car like art. Genuine interest, basic questions and maybe a few pics. I'm happy to have met some nice people both young and old by just hanging out and being polite. Spending some time with some appreciative spectators usually makes up for the stampede of tools.
Just remember, a long hard day at work, traffic, crappy roads and a few tools can be a receipt for misery. BIG |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I get a kick out of the people who don't recognize the model name of our old cars today.
We all here have Nova,Chevelle,Elcamino,Impala,Corvair etc.in our DNA,but many people today are only somewhat familiar with the names Camaro & Monte Carlo. And some are speechless when they walk upon an old station wagon for the first time. I always grin when a young child walks up to me to ask what my car is called, and then yells back to their parents,"It's called a Chevelle". Are we really that old? |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Yep!
|
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Always pay attention to the young people and answer their questions. The old people either already know the answers or they are not capable of understanding the answers.

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
If your car's not red you have about a 25% less chance to win anything. The absent minded voters simply vote based on color.
I go to the shows to hear the random spectator who's there by chance talk about their brothers old Hemi Road Runner. It usually checks out as an old 68 Satellite or something, but the stories are cool none the less. Plus, there's that remote chance that it was actually an old Hemi Road Runner |

People go to cruises / informal car shows to "win" something? Really? hmmm, definitely a difference of reasons ... |

Had a woman walk up to my car and proclaim she bought a new 1968 SS chevelle with the same working flapper cowl ind. hood.
I told her that was impossible. She told me not to tell her what she knows & was the fact that she's a woman have something to do with me not believing her? I told her that year Chevelle couldn't get that hood till 1970,but she was adamant and said I was wrong. Kept standing there like I was a male chauvinist pig. I have a 1967 fastback Mustang that has some rough paint at the bottom of the A pillars. It's a driver so I don't really care. The last 2 cruise nights I've had it at, people have picked or have tried to pick the paint off with their fingernails. Who does that? Seriously?

People like you who move other people's cones who have reserved a spot for their buddies. It's matter of handling another person's personal property, which you stated you have no problem with, so why complain about someone touching your car????? Verne |

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Any kind of big car show where I live is pretty rare so for the most part they're all fairly small gatherings. There really isn't a problem with saving a space or two for someone coming later because there is usually a ton of spots to park even if you come late. The problem I have personally run into is the smug, cocky types with the high dollar resto's and such that act like you shouldn't even be there. One guy came up to me and my family one show and had the nerve to say "What are YOU doing with a Z28?" Like I shouldn't own one. I'm just an average, factory worker, machine operator that sometimes can't even rub two pennies together, but I do have a 69 Z28 that is unrestored and is a nice driver. I just looked at him and his buddies and laughed. It really amazes me that there are a lot of people with nice cars with really shitty attitudes. It should be a requirement to have a good attitude if you bring a car to a show. I haven't gone to a show in a lot of years, too much drama for me.

For the record, I would never, ever touch anyone's vehicle. However, a road cone blocking a parking space? C'mon Verne The minute I see someone spending tens of thousands on cheap plastic road cones where people are enjoying them, driving them, restoring them, waxing them, and showing them. I won't touch them! |

I'm kind of a black or white guy. I don't touch anyone's personal property without permission, whether it's the straw in his Coke or the radiator cap on his Cobra.

Verne </div></div> X2...I would challenge anyone to try and move a cone or a coke straw...I might get my butt kicked but they'll know never to do it again. I don't touch anyone's stuff and they better not touch mine. One of the first things I taught my kids and my grand kids....if it doesn't belong to you don't touch it. |

Case in point: Took my '84 Porsche 911 to an all-Porsche show-and-shine sponsored by the local PCA chapter. Lots of nice cars and nice people. Some yay-hoo shows up with his 911 coupe with a small-block Chevy stuck in the back seat! (There's always one.) Okay, I get it, 911s aren't known for their drag-race credentials so there's always people who need more. Okay, to each his own. But this was more like a poke in the eye with a stick, intended to irritate the P-car crowd--which is probably not hard to do. Not a particularly nice job either, kinda' ratty, kinda' unsanitary. So what car gets the crowd's vote for Best of Show? Yes! The ratty half-a$$ed 911 with the 350 Chevy in back! I just laughed and laughed. It really was funny. Hey, you can't expect to get the crowd you wish for (unless it's MCACN) so you must suffer the consequences when the votes are cast. This is not a political post. If it sounds like one, I understand! |

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I was at a local show a few years ago. There was a guy walking around with a Doberman on a leash. This dumb azz actually stopped and let his dog pee on the wheel of a friends AAR Cuda. Luckily the friend wasn't there to see it. The guy was quickly escorted off of the show field and threatened with bodily harm if he returned.

Had my 67 Vette' in a car show -- it had yellow plastic chain in t-bars surrounding the car. Most people understood what the chain was for -- DO NOT TOUCH ... PLEASE!!! This lady walks up with a child and starts to ask questions about the Vette' -- before anyone could stop him, the little boy ducks under the chain and uses the door mirror to pull himself up to look inside the car. Yep -- the damn mirror broke off. Just an accident but there was a group of !@#$!@ to anyone that would listen. TAZ

Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
I may stop going to car shows with my Chevelle as the question I get asked the most is "Is that a real LS6 SS" with a copy of the build sheet and window sticker right on the dash.
Time to make a new sign for my dash "Yes it is a real F@#%$N LS6 SS" Nobody ever asked me if my 1970 Challenger is a real R/T S.E. though. Envy and Jealousy continues......... |
Re: I'VE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE AT CAR CRUISES
Like anything we all remember the bad instances. However, I'm guessing more than a fair share of the people who have had something negative happen have benefitted greatly from someone giving them a lead on a car or parts etc..
