Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Latest Update.
After mark finished with the fenders he turned his attention to the doors. The passenger door was an original , was straight but had some rust. I had acquired NOS skins for the doors so the plan was to ensure the shells were solid. Expectidly there were weak flanges and areas where the rust developed between layers of metal. With old skin removed Mark was able to see where the challanges were: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psctx95nqf.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psknjehfb3.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psxonep29m.jpg Measurements were taken to ensure the flanges were re constructed to the same size as originals: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psbd7am8fa.jpg All areas of the door shells were blasted looking for weakness: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psxjdbxq2l.jpg |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Hey now..... I thought this was a Canadian restoration, who still uses the imperial system? :-)
Looking good, this is a serious deep dive! Ryan |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Areas were metals were boxed were particularly vulnerable and Mark removed the pieces to gain access to fabricate new pieces as necessary. The caged nuts for the hinges were one particular area:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psf69gq3zv.jpg These were areas where the factory spot welds were cut to remove the inner reiforcement: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pswusdwvmx.jpg The drivers door had been hit in the past and the leading edges were too far feformed to make the shell re usable. A good doner shell was selected from the 5 parts cars that Mark has in his back 40 wherever a piece of metal needs replacement: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psfjgq0kpq.jpg Same process to clean up left door http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psxjdbxq2l.jpg When all repair work was done, the door shells were primed with DTM. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psysivlfzg.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psra4xatmj.jpg The NOS door skins were not perfect as there were minor dings etc after all these years of storage: http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psrm5ogdos.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps78ou580n.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psbqqogml8.jpg |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
The insides of the skins got better preparation that the outside did in 1971

Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Are the NOS Uniroyals the ones that are now residing on the 1000 point Canadian Black W-30?
Any luck on locating/purchasing original engine? Is there a thread longer than Ryan's? "War and Peace" isn't as long! |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Dave
That is another set of Uniroyals I have , I sold a set to Scot Tedro last year and I believe those are the ones on his car.. No luck on the original block, next submissions will be about the driveline. Paul |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Great snow tire! I'd love a set!
Nice color on the 71w convertible. Keep posting on the build thread.... |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
This will be an amazing car Paul!
And yes, Paul was kind enough to provide the tires for the 1970 Black Canadian W30 Mascar Classics restored. |
Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Great resto Paul. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: Barn Find 442 W30
Here is the last installment on the doors for now. Final finishing will be done when doors are hung on car to get final alignment with quarters and fenders.

I have had trouble posting photos so there have been no visual updates recent although there has been progress on the car... slow progress.
The big news today is I made contact with the original owner. The background: About 5 years ago I ran an ad on Kijiji in Corner Brook Newfoundland seeking info about the car, I got only a few responses which led to the second owner, who could not be found. About a week ago I posted another ad on Kijiji with photos of a restored 72 identical to mine. In particular I was looking for dealer memorabilia . I got many responses and made contact with a few "car guys" in Corner brook. Through conversations I got the name of the dealer GM in the early 70's then the sales manager for the Stepheville ,Nl branch, Bob Mercer. Bob said he was sure he remembered the car and the original lady owner. he was going to check with another work colleague who would also remember. This morning I got an email from Bob with the name and phone number of the original lady owner. Lorreta Burrell was 30 when she placed the order for her fully loaded 71 Olds 442 W30 convertible through salesman Walt Everett. This had been the 3rd new convertible Loretta had ordered since 1968, She said, I always ordered my cars. Her 68 was an Impala SS, her 69 was an Impala SS and she ordered a 1970 Olds 442 W30, that she recalled took a long time to get.Ordered in April 1970 it didnt show up until March 1971 as a 1971 due to the prolonged GM strike in the fall of 1970. Loretta recalled things about the car that could only be known by the owner. The original story I had was that the car was owned by a US serviceman or RCMP officer and I recall seeing it driven by a young women. Loretta's Husband Thomas was a US Airforce pilot , discharged in 1970 due to a back injury. He had been stationed at Harmon NAS in Stephenville during the late 60's where he met Loretta. Although a native of Cleveland Ohio, they opted to settle in Stephenville, which was Loretta's home town. Loretta recalled having a lot of fun with the 442 but constantly had carburator trouble. She traded it in after two years, she could not recall what car she bought next but did buy a 1977 Z28, Black with red stripes and a t top, Today she drives a Buick Enclave with a sunroof. Loretta says she has 40 photo albums and has some early day photos of the car as she was always asked to use her convertibles in Parades and weddings. She was very excited to learn her car still existed and is looking forward to seeing completed photos. |

So exciting to hear about an original owner!! Way to go Paul. Ryan |
Thanks Ryan
647 NOS parts is the current count and negotiating on two more. |

Ryan W. PS: Will you get to NFL one day soon to meet Loretta? PPS: When she shares the fossil photos I would suggest posting them directly from your PC, all these picture sites seem to be a waste of time to me, and if they change their settings later all the pictures on websites like this disappear:-( |
Ryan
I may make a trip in Early March, I dont want to waste any time on this opportunity. Paul |

On my way to Newfoundland tonight. Picking up Bob Mercer, who was the sales manager at Corner Brook Garage Ltd, in the 70's, in the morning.
Bob will be coming with me to Stephenville to meet Loretta Burrell, the original owner. She has some original photos of the car. We will be recording and taping the interview. On Friday I am hosting "happy hour" at the Glynmill Inn in Corner Brook for the people who helped with my search for the original owner. The second owner will be there as well. Fun times! |

Can’t wait to find out how this unfolds!! Ryan |
Now that sounds like a good time - look forward to hearing about it in person next week.
Detective Martin is on the case! |
I had a great day today meeting With Bob Mercer and hearing about his career with Corner Brook Garage, the selling dealer for my 442.
We met with Loretta Burrell around 10:00 AM in Stephenville. Loretta brought along two early photos of the car being used in Baseball League Parade circa 1973. She explained her car was called on a lot in this small town as it was the only convertible here. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pspstwre1e.jpg |
The Photo is very fuzzy but it shows the car circa 1973 with Loretta at the wheel, and a full baseball team on board.
Those 442 enthusiasts will note the car has a chrome rear view mirror and the stripes may not be correct. Loretta explained thar the car had been in three accidents during her ownership years. One accident required the replacement of the left front fender, door skin and repairs to the quarter panel and door jam. Obviously a sport mirror was not replaced. This was noticed when I got the car as the drivers door still had the original frame with a newer Skin. My restoration guy Mark had noticed the jam area had been hit before and required some massaging. |
In this photo, left to right, Bob Mercer, Loretta Burrell and myself.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psdfq2wph6.jpg Loretta is about 4 feet tall and she always required the seats in her cars to ne raised with additional metal rails so she could see over the steering wheel. Lorettas previous cars were a 68 Impala Hardtop, a 69 Impala Convertible, the 442. After the 442 she ordered a 75 Monte Carlo with a sunroof and then a 1978 Camaro Z28. What possessed Loretta to special order a 1971 442 W30 convertible with every option other than A/C and cruise control. She stated, she saw the 1970 sales brochure with the Orange 442 W30 and went to the dealer and told salesman Walt Everett she wanted that car in a convertible, and they checked all the boxes for options. Loretta waited a long time for her car due to the 67 day strike in the fall of 1970 and the car finally arrived in March 1971, as a 1971 with 1970 colours and argent painted wheels. The car was the hottest car in Stephenville.NL (population 6700), and sought after by every 17 year old waiting for Loretta to buy a new car. That lucky second owner was Barry Fowlow. Barry,17 in 1975 with a newly minted Newfounland drivers liscense was working at the Stephenville Branch of CBG when Loretta traded her 442 in on her New 1975 Monte Carlo. Barry was on duty that day in June 1975, washing cars and pumping gas,and told Walt Everett that he wanted to buy the 442. With an agreed purchase price of $2000.00 supplied by a bank loan signed by Barry's father, the 442 was his. I will be meeting with Barry tomorrow and getting the details of his two years of ownership. |
Here is the latest photos of my project.
The frame has all been straightened, results of three accidents required a lot of tweaking. Body had been returned to frame with all welds drilled in preparation of removing the shell, less floor pans and rockers,to make way for full new floor pan and full trunk floor. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psx6hqm5jn.jpg Body has been well braced for surgery. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ps1bp5xivj.jpg More photos to come now that PhotoBucket is behaving. |
Looks like an awesome visit!!!
Well done:-) The car must have gotten away on her a few times? Ryan |
Ryan
Despite Lorettas deminuative size she was capable of handling the car, three accidents were not her fault. She often referred to using the dual gate in manual mode and the car would "dance". She must have been quite a sight, little her in that muscle car. BTW, her husband Thomas did not drive as he had an injury from his US Airforce days that left him in a wheel chair most of the time. |
Here is some dealer memorabilia rounded up by Bob Mercer, including his sales jacket from 1970, a dealer promo plate and dealer emblems in metal and two decals. Along with a rogues gallery photo, Bob on the left.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pskqfnknvd.jpg Bob also sent me his sales jacket from 1970 and a brand new key fob. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pskqfnknvd.jpg [/http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pss3dka7cn.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pshfvp3zma.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psbrqhdtsn.jpg |
Jackpot, the memorabilia would be almost impossible to find!!!
She made it “dance” stellar!! Ryan |
----Paul,,, Great couple of days for you. An ambitious project, but then the right person is heading it up. Cant wait to see it completed. I hope that jacket fits as you absolutely have to wear it when you debut this W-30 at MCACN!.......Bill S

Bill
The jacket is a little snug, might need o lose 40lbs to get it on. You will probably see it on a mannequin. Polyester pants, wide tie, white patent leather shoes. Paul |
---- There you go. No reason to punish yourself!....Bill S

Outstanding photos Paul. Not many would do the investigative work you have done my friend. So cool. My hat is off to you for taking in this project. It has not been for the faint of heart. Was there when you picked it up in Revelstoke. Even then my thoughts were very few would go where you would have to take this. And also not many auto body technicians would be willing, and moreover capable of tackling this project. Mark has seen many firsts with this car. Can hardly wait for the first "nice shape" comment. Rolling on it's own frame today. Looked so nice to see that.
|
Amazing Paul!!

Enjoyed reading all of this post this morning on your restoration of the "Newfie Rocket"! Some amazing cars have come thru here in Atlantic Canada (I live in New Brunswick) and it's great to see this one getting the resto it deserves and with all the cool documentation to go along with it!
