Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
The plan was to drive the Nova around most of the summer, then start pulling the car apart. Well the plan has changed. I decided to start the project now.
First step, pull the battery out, and remove the rad cap, then drain the water. Then I started pulling the nose off. I also removed the gas tank and all the fuel lines, because I wanted all the gas out of my shop for safety reasons. I got way more done than I planned for one afternoon/evening. The trans is out, after a major fluid spill. The motor is ready to come out....probably tomorrow evening. lots more to do, but it's a great start. I'm beat! http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd5d7610a.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps48f1aeb6.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf8ae0b21.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3ae12a3c.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psac942259.jpg |

I told Bill the car would be upside down in his garage with him scraping the undercoating off by July 4th. He is ahead of schedule like a typical perfectionist.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Lots of progress this evening. Got the engine out, removed the column shift steering column, auto pedal assembly, many small parts like wipers, wire harnesses. Also got all the brake lines, and master out, all in the garbage. Here's a few shots of the progress, and my storage issues, which I have to deal with. The whole shop is a mess. By tomorrow night, I hope to get everything stored away, and get the dozens of tools put away.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
I made a lot of progress today. Got the rear axle out, and the sub-frame. The goal here is to get the body ready for the rotisserie, so I can flip the body upside down, and get all the undercoating off everything. I hate undercoating!! All I have left to do, is to remove the rear bumper, and it should be ready. The frame is almost ready to go to the sand blaster. I just have to pull the control arms off. Here's a few more pics of the progress.

Bill,
why do you have two downspouts right next to each other on the left side of your garage? |

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
I haven't posted progress pis in a while. I got the frame out, it's blasted. I also have the body work on the frame done. I also have most of the front end parts painted. Still have to work on the control arms. Have to fix some minor pitting, then press all the bushings in. Here's some pics of the progress.
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps234b0bf4.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps002ce9d5.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4e5cbae7.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps564e01f0.jpg This is the original idler arm. Got all the paint off it, and detailed it. It's still tight. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps28895948.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf1614dc9.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pscf757502.jpg Tom had put new brakes on the Nova, so I used them on the new 12 bolt. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps0697496f.jpg I also got the high build primer on the frame today. It should be ready for the top coat, after another sanding session. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse5c6c3ab.jpg |

Mark Sheppard </div></div> Actually Mark, this one has been easy so far. It's been fun stuff like building the motor, trans, rear, and front end. The frame will be painted by tomorrow evening, then I can assemble the chassis. If it was like work, I wouldn't be doing it, I guess. The worst is yet to come/undercoating removal.....yikes! But Albert is loaning me his rotisserie for the project. I hope to have that done in a couple weeks. Lots of car shows coming up, so I won't be able to get as much done. I'll keep plugging away until it's done. Thanks for the feedback/more pics to come. |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Albert was able to paint his wheels because I was able to get my newly painted frame out of the booth, because it finally stopped raining.
Well, I'm on my way now. Lots of progress, and on to the "funner" stuff. Got the frame painted and started assembling it. I need some hardware for the assembly, that never got here after ordering it last week. I called and made a stink....it will be here tomorrow. I'm gonna take a few days off and take the Elky to an AACA show this weekend, then back to business, finishing up the frame. The rotisserie is also available now, so the body undercoating removal will begin next week. Here's some shots of the progress. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psfcb05b5c.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf3d0a05d.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps82f58f62.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd23595d4.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4049e696.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse5879598.jpg |

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Thanks for the positive feedback folks. I'll keep adding progress pics if anyone is interested.
Lots of progress. I got the majority of the undercoating off. I still have some small areas to clean up a bit more. Mostly it was removed with fire and scraping. Then cleaned it up with a DA, and wire wheel on the grinder. Also used some paint remover in tight areas. I'm very happy with the condition of the underbody. You never know what you'll find when removing undercoating, but this car was 99% rust free. Just a couple areas of surface rust, which I'll fix with some body work. Also got the firewall stripped. Found a couple numbers under the black paint. Also found big check mark. Not sure what that was for. Here's a few pics. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psb59980cc.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psfdd068a7.jpg I still have to remove, and redo the seam sealer. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3c693272.jpg Also got these 2 pieces done today. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse28c2f80.jpg |

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Nice firewall codes; the 'A' is for the black interior stuff, '65' for the paint, and I'm guessing this is a v/t top car with that giant 'V'??

I was wondering what that mark could mean Marlin. Now that you mention it, it does look like a big V. I've never seen this before. I'll probably put the codes back when I'm done, and I should know what the V means. Makes sense to me. |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Hi ,very nice work on the car so far.... I have a couple of questions. Did you replace the a arm bushings and then paint them? What did you coat your drag link with to protect it? Are the washers on the upper a-arms bare metal or painted black ?
Thanks Rob |

Thanks Rob </div></div> I prime and paint one coat on the control arms, then install the bushings. Then I mask off the bushings and repaint the black. The drag link has cast iron paint on it. The upper a-arm bushings should be natural or nickel plated. I used a phos paint, but I'll change them before the project is finished. |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
It's been a busy couple weeks. Got the rest of the bottom striped of all the undercoating. Then sanded it one last time. Then sand blasted the tight areas, that I couldn't reach with the sander..
Yesterday I stuck the whole thing in the trailer, and took it around the corner to Alberts shop, to prime, and paint the bottom in his spray booth. It came out great. Tomorrow it comes back here, and the Elky goes in the trailer for GM Carlisle. When I get back, I hope to start the assembly process. I also found a tack that fits the factory dash bezel. I got the dash all cleaned up, and reassembled/ready to go back in the car. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps0440ce7c.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps2994dff7.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps820dc4fa.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd80401ab.jpg |
