Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

... I believe that not all the 1969 Yenko Camaros were also equipped with the copo option 9737

.... Which I believe is as follow... ( correct me if I'm wrong )

9737 Sports Car Conversion

Note: COPO 9737 included the following:
• E70x15 White Letter Tires on 15" Rally Wheels
• 13/16" Stabilizer Bar
• 140 MPH Speedometer

.... Someone got a great car

I read somewhere that GM added the 9737 as an option during the 69 year, as requested by Yenko . Is there a month known as to when GM approved and started to use the option?

cheers Dave

Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

COPO 9737 was likely developed in conjunction with COPO 9561, supposed to be exclusive to Yenko Sportscars Inc. The only documentation known is the internal parts listing Chevrolet may have sent to certain dealers. The copy I have is included with a letter originally dated January 2, 1969; revised July 1969. The listing includes a grid with 12 ECLs and the equipment associated with each. 4 of the ECLs are flagged “used as a vehicle combination with COPO option 9560”; the other 8 are exclusive to COPO 9561. They are differentiated by transmission type and whether or not the center fuel gauge was included although a tach part number is not included or mentioned. None of the 4 9560 ECLs included the fuel gauge.

I have a few shippers and window sticker copies that list 9737. One of the first COPO 9561 ’69 Camaros built lists 9737JD [no fuel gauge] with a price of $126.40. A June car has 9737FD with a list price of $184.35. This car is known to have been built with U16 but it is not on docs and must have been included with 9737FD. ZL1 #65 was built with 9737JD but has a list price of $160.10.

Worthy of note: at some point 9561 no longer included positraction and a 4.10 axle. The June car lists G80 as an extra-cost option [probably mandatory] at $56.90 because it included H-D cooling when a 4.10 axle was specified. There was an additional charge of $2.15 for the 4.10 ratio.

So, much remains to be learned about COPOs.

Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

Don Yenko was given the COPO number 9737 in 1968 for the Yenko Sports car conversion Camaro option including the 140 speedo, large ft sway bar and other HD parts.

Fred Gibb was given the COPO number 9738 for his special order 1968 Chevy II SS396 L78 TH400 cars

As far as I know, only Don and Fred were allowed to order those 1968 cars.

In 1969 the COPO 9737 option was used for special order 427 Chevelles and 427 Camaros for any dealer

are you saying there were 51 built not 50 of the COPO 9738 Chevy II?

any documentation or is it just hearsay?

A lot of documentation shows 50 built including a letter to NHRA from Chevy's Paul Prior and Vince Piggins and all of Fred Gibb's info including his vin list.

If one were trying to keep it as an unrestored vehicle it would probably be best to find a survivor 6 cyl and strip it of everything(brackets, nuts bolts etc, under the hood and chassis.

Sad to report the new owner plans on having the car painted and installing a/c on it. This is an Original Paint car. This pains me.

Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

I have tried to explain how truly rare the car is to the current owner; great original paint, original owner car, original drivetrain, interior, etc. It is truly one of only a few Yenko Camaros in this condition. The buyer appreciates the rarity and paid for it but I really hope it does not lose the originality that really makes it one of a kind. It would be a shame to see such a great original car completely restored.

This is disturbing. There were cheaper restored cars he could have purchased. I hate when the &quot;wrong buyer&quot; gets a special car. I am sick.

WOW...that's like buying the MonaLisa and having some paint work done so she has short hair cause you prefer chics with short hair...yikes...this is like a whole new category of S................upercar

If he wants a unique Supercar to install A/C on I'll offer him up my 1 of 1 COPO as trade....eeek.

It's nothing new ... This kind of stuff just keeps going on... I watched the restored LS6 conv. Ray Allen Chevelle get sold at the R&amp;M auction at the Petersen museum a few years back get sold for $240,000 to the guy who owns Von Dutch clothing and he was going to strip all of the newly applied drag racing livery stickers off and daily drive the car ... Granted the car wasnt restored 100% to its former self, but if all he wanted was an LS6 conv. chevelle I don't think he should have bought that car. Mind you the car only had 1/4 mile milage on it ...

thanks Pete !! Do you know why they reset the body numbers?? </div></div>

Don't know that there is a definitive answer to this. But... the reset corresponded to the time frame when 70 model year production started on the other lines. Camaro &amp; Corvette 1969 production was extended through Nov and Dec. respectively.

That is also when the blue VIN sticker started showing up on the door. Corvette guys always call that BDY number the &quot;ident&quot; number. My guess would be that GM needed a way to track all the cars subject to the 70 model federal standards, and resetting was the easiest way to do that.

My late 08A car has 100381.

Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

Guys,

Just so you know, I had the car inspected by a VERY reputable person prior to purchase who shall remain nameless, unless they wish to chime in. They did not think this car was a true survivor, and that is why I bought it and am having it restored. If it was a true survivor, I would have either passed or just freshened it up. I'm not crazy, stupid or off my rocker. I passed on a survivor BM '70 Chevelle and '70 Olds 442- W30 4 speed rag top just for that reason.

The car is being properly restored using the few NOS parts needed since almost all of the car was original, less hoses belts and such. A/C is NOT being added to this car as unfortunately it may become my one trailer queen. In case I do decide to drive it, I have had a period correct 427/M21 built to drop into the car to make sure the original drive train is preserved.

Yes, I have installed Vintage air on some of my cars so they can be driven and used down here in So. Florida vs. just sit in a garage and gather dust so to speak. All the A/C installs are non damaging and completely removable to return the car undamaged back to factory specs.

Tell me, which is worse; buying a car like this and locking it away from the car lover world in my garage so only I can view it because it's to rare to take out or restoring, driving and showing them at local shows. Which do you think is a bigger crime? My kids have to get to school some how..................

Just because I have the ability to buy a car like this does NOT equate to me having the mind set that I don't appreciate or respect these cars because I have &quot;money to burn&quot; as some have indicated, on the contrary, I have immense respect and love for these vehicles.

As a kid my back yard abutted Steven Siegel's backyard and I've seen his '71 Hemi Cuda convertible in my driveway. I assure you all, I appreciate these cars and have since a young age.

Hey Michael, nice to see you popping up on the site.

Yeah we had a crazy neighborhood back in the day. I still remember driving my 69 Pace Car around the circle (we lived on a large dead end circular road), and stopping in your driveway to say Hi to you and your brothers back when I was around 14 years old. (The statute of limitations on underage driving has thankfully passed).

That was back when my brother Jeff had his 69 Daytona Yellow SS396 Camaro, too. I'd also sneak that car out and drive it around when he wasn't looking.

Ah, the good old days...I remember getting into a heated argument in your driveway with your brother over which was faster: my Camaro or a new 1977 Trans Am.

Man, I was such a punk back in the 1970s!

P.S. if you want a supercar with A/C you should find a nice 1973 SD455. There's a neat one on ebay right now with 10K miles, and it is in Florida, too!

Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

There are many definitions of survivor and in the Yenko Camaro world this was one of the best in spite of the imron painted firewall and underbody. It was one of only a handful of original paint Yenko Camaros left and the original paint/vinyl top/glass was excellent with some flaws. Original paint exemplifies survivor more than an other factor in my opinion. Once repainted it will become like so many other restored/repainted cars. I would have corrected the firewall and underbody finishes/components and enjoyed the original paint as it has been for so many years . It would have made an excellent original paint driver, flaws and all. It will now be a nicely restored repainted Yenko driver. To each is own I guess.

Steve,

Yup, Ox Bow lane was a lot of fun and a safe place for sure. My brother Henry just sold the old homestead on Ox Bow about 2 months ago. :-(

An SD Trans Am is on my short list for sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't A/C only come on cars with automatics? I haven't seen a 4 speed A/C car yet.

Let us not forget your blown Blazer or the Superbird.

FYI: I still keep in touch with Mark Lieberman, not enough but we talk every once in awhile.

Yup, A/C was only available on the automatics. I remember Mark and his 1974 Formula 455 Firebird. I remember how he rebuilt the engine in his basement and then we couldn't get it up the stairs to install it in the car! I don't recall how he ever got the engine up to ground level??? Tell him I said hi, next time you talk to him.

Re: "Barn Find" The Last 69 Yenko Camaro......

Amazing how this car is getting some negative attention because it is being restored yet another original paint Yenko got tons of respect and admiration even though a lot of restoration was done on it as well (except no repaint) and it sold for huge money a few of years ago. The restorer of Michael's Yenko calls me at least once a week and I will assure you he not only knows what he is doing, is doing it correctly and has spent a ton of time researching the car and Yenko's in general. He called me just yesterday morning asking what he should be paying for NOS door and drip rail weatherstrip and evidently I hit the numbers exactly as he said he would go ahead and purchase the NOS ones he located because it was very close to the numbers I gave him. He is locating the best of the best parts he can get his hands onto and is using next to no reproduction parts and as Michael stated it is no longer getting Vintage Air. I will assure you this car was anything but a survivor. Original paint to me does not constitute original survivor and the bottom side and engine compartment were pathetic (and no offense to the great original owner). When he did these modifications to the car it was simply a Camaro to him. The interior was very nice and I believe may be staying in the car. Also, most of the suspension pieces were purchased from the local auto store years ago with virtually none of it being correct. As far as correcting the firewall and underside, that was not going to happen. Anyone who has worked with Imron paint knows. Its all or nothing. As always, one respected member does this to their car and nothing is said while while an unknown does it they get beat up. Go figure. I understand preserving a survivor just as much as the next guy but in my opinion, this was just not the car to preserve in that state. We all talk about how much we wish these car were driven and used as they were originally attended and hate it when a car is restored and becomes a trailer queen. I can assure you this is NOT the case with Michael. I am restoring his 1970 L78 Chevelle convert to MCRD's standards and possibly with A/C as well but as with all his cars there will be NO body modifications to incorporate the A/C, will be installed to conceal as much as possible and it can be returned to stock relatively easily.

When the original owner sold the car he was told A/C was going to be installed when the car was restored.. That would tend to make someone question the level of restoration on such a nice original paint Yenko.

Mark, I can certainly understand your concerns as trust me, I had the same concerns myself especially with Michael potentially wanting the same thing on his other cars here in my shop . I can assure you Harbor Restoration is qualified. I have done my own bit of research on them and he is more than knowledgable and capable even though they decided against it on the Camaro. Based on the photos I just saw of his Hemi I am even more pleased with the quality.
