Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Here are a few pictures of the car as I purchased it in March 1980. Note the 15x10 slotted aluminum rear wheels and L60-15 tires.....musta been the hot setup on 70 Challengers.

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
this car proves my point that the day2 look of cars around chicago were with wider front tires.
super cool pictures. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Great looking car Bill. How did she run? Tranny, reared, mods.....?

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Sam, the Hemi had some nuances that I was unfamiliar with, but once I got it all sorted out it ran really strong. It had the 4 speed and the Super Track Pac (4.10 Dana and power disc brakes) but I rebuilt it as totally stock/original. By current standards it would need to be completely re-restored to be top notch, but in 1987 when I finished the resto, it was darn nice.
This car was the original owner's daily driver for 5 years. He worked midnight shift at the local Caterpillar Tractor assembly plant in our area, and he would go by the Union 76 gas station that all my friends and I would hang out at most every night, on his way to work. It was the only Hemi car I ever knew of in our area. In 1975 with 64,000 miles on it, he pulled the engine out for a refreshing, and for many and varied reasons it never got any further. I also worked at the same Caterpillar plant, and in 1980 when I heard he was going to sell it, I jumped on it. |

This is the Challenger that I was asking about.
1970 Black A66 California Survivor. All original paint, glass, interior, drivetrain, etc. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Just beautiful! Is it a 340 car? Can't quite make it out.

Sam,
Yes, it's a 340 car. The A66 Package included the 340 4-BBL (This was the only way you could get it and the first level performance package), the Power Bulge Hood, Hood Pins, 15 inch Wheels, Front and Rear Sway Bars, Chrome Dual Mirrors and the Tail Stripe. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
very nice package. thanks Ed!

Re: 1970 Black Challengers

Meanwhile, over at Plymouth, the 340 in the Barracuda was only available as part of the 'Cuda model. Then, for 1971, the 340 was available on both the base Challenger <span style="font-style: italic">and</span> the R/T. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Diego,
Another thing my car has is factory rolled fender lips like the Hemi cars. It appears that Dodge was setting these cars up for high performance wheel and tire combinations. Did the 'Cuda get these as well? Thanks for your help, Ed |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
As far as I know, the Hemi 'cudas in '70 got the "rolled" front fenders to accommodate the mandatory F60-15 tire/wheel combo. I would suspect that this would be an option for other non-Hemi 'cudas. AARs had the F60-15s didn't they? I suspect they had "rolled" front fenders too.

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Ed, very nice looking e body! John
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Sam,
Maybe it was because of the 15 inch wheels. The Challenger came with E60 15s. The odd thing about this car is the rear lips appear to be factory rolled as well. I believe the AAR and TA came with E60 15s and G60 15s. Thanks John! Did you ever get that little Camaro that we talked about? |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Most Hemi cudas have an additional fender tag saying "Hemi fender" which of course is a reference to the rolling of the fenders. No mention of rear quarters being altered on these tags that I know of. But ,I have not checked the rear quarter lips of these cars.

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
I don't believe the Trans Am cars were supposed to come with Hemi fenders, although some apparently did. I've looked at half a dozen original paint T/As and AARs over the years that didn't have rolled fenders.
I've seen a couple of Hemi Challengers without the rolled fenders, but never a HemiCuda. Chrysler, go figure. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
My old Hemi Challenger originally had the rolled fender lips. When I restored the car and got NOS fenders from Chrysler, one side was available with the rolled lip and one was not. I had the body shop roll the other lip to match.
I seem to recall that the AAR 'Cudas and/or T/A Challengers had a fender tag that read "Trans Am Fender" |

And I think it was rendered moot by the smaller front tire on the production cars. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
My '70 Hemi Challenger still has its' original fenders - rolled lips.

Re: 1970 Black Challengers
What is your Challenger's tire and wheel size per broadcast sheet or other evidence Bergy?
|
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Sam,
I can't answer for Bergy but mine originally came with 15x7 Rally wheels with F60-15 tires. |
Re: 1970 Black Challengers
Sam - 15" Rallys with white letter tires. I can't recall the tire size on the broadcast sheet, and I'm not in PA to look it up right now. The wheels on it are originals - all the same December '69 date.
