If I entered my Oldsmobile in a day to judging were would I find the rules to make sure the rims qualify for day two. Some of my friends are telling me to buy new rims polished but I don't favor that recommendation.

Ansens should definitely qualify as day 2 since they were available when the cars were new. I'm not sure who to talk to about judging rules though.

A friend of mine bought a 72 Chevelle brand new once he got home from Vietnam. Within one year he put aluminum slots on it. They were 15x7on the front, 15x8.5 on the rear. I think they were American Racing? Anyways he just asked me to sell them for him this summer as he put the original wheels on his car once it was restored. Unfortunately I just sold them a month ago!

Thanks David, I need 14x7 to be able to install Firestone Wide Ovals like the original owner did in 1970.

Lee, the Ansens SupernovaSS has are 100% correct including the metal caps-later caps were plastic.
The new Ansens are shaped wrong. Besides the general look of the wheel, the kidney bean hole is different and they have those concave lug nut pockets. The entire wheel is a carictature of the originals.

Thanks for those that helped me especially whitetop and Jason. I am on my way to day two the way Rug (the original owner) set up his car.
Thanks Ray I am guessing you had one of those great LS6s in the chevelle row: Did you see it at MCACN.

Lee, Unfortunately I have never been to MCACN. I had friend that did go and he said the cars are amazing.

Did you buy the wheels Jason offered?

Ray

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

----I dont know about the rest of the world, but back in 1968/72 in Ft.Lauderdale we would buy brand new aftermarket wheels and take them straight to the local polisher. They just looked so much better polished than the way they came out of the box. With slots we would do the whole face, but with spokes we would leave the spokes rough-cast and paint them metallic grey. This is a practice I still follow to this day. Nothing beats a set of American spokes with a rough center and polished up outer lip.
----A lot of us also drove on Goodyear racing tires because the southern Goodyear Racing Distributer used to be on Federal Highway just north of the Lauderdale airport. They were happy to sell us any tire they had. It did help that I shared a house with the shop manager though!.....Bill S

That is what I plan to do......polish the heck out of them. They will look great on the old bucket of bolts. Lee

Here is a pictures of one of tires going on the Ansen rims. Not like the car is not already a little over the top. Original tires not reproduction Goodyear 70 series on the front and 60 on the back. Just like Rug would have done it after he wore out the original tires to get better traction. Day two rims and tires too!

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

Unfortunately, no 60 series 14's are being reproduced at this time. Wish I could help you there!! If you went 15's, we could go bigs and littles for you!!!

I should ask this on the day 2 part, but if a 60 series 14 were to be redone, what size would everyone like to see come crawling back?

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

I have all four of the original tires already two new two great used. I had stashed them years ago and now have a home for them on Jason's Ansen rims. Lee

L60-14 without a doubt.

Agree; L60-14.

Yep, L-60s

(not 275-60, )

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

I would guess there would be greater demand for the Goodyear 15" than the 14". I am doing 14s because the original owner put 14s on the car one month after he bought it. Most of the Chevelle and other folks went to an aftermarket 15 wheel in the day........I think.

Need some help identifying these wheels. I know they were bought around 1970. Magnesium. I don't see any identification marks on them Any help and possible value would be appreciated.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

They are a great looking wheel. I wouldn't have guessed them to be Magnesium. How do you tell?

Lug pattern looks smaller than 5x4-3/4. What is the history you know of them around 1970? How about size? I'll compare them to some old ads and such and let you know if I find anything.

Re: 1970 aluminum slotted wheel questions

I have a set of 14x7 polished Appliance that I'm putting on my 72 Supreme this spring. Thanks for the pics. After seeing your pics I pulled the trigger on them when I saw them listed locally. I wasn't sure how the 14's would look vs. 15's given the tire options for 14 inch tires these days. I would still like to find L60's for the back...no luck yet. Beautiful restore.
