Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
I'm digging the no-hood look man!
|
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
I remember when running without a hood to show off the engine was the Cool thing to do. I know it's not the "Cool" you're looking for Mayhem. LOL.
|
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Thanks folks.
A buddy keeps trying to tell me it's illegal to run no hood. Says if it came from the factory you can, otherwise not. I don't know of any cars that came without a hood! Anyway, yep, it was fun, but the hood is modded and back on. Now it breathes. Thanks. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Don't sweat it. Harley's are tyically not legal with loud pipes, but rarely do they get ticketed. I think you Nova is old enough you kind of get a pass for being an American Classic.
Now, when mark Hasset Jr is running around wiht his 10 second Honda and no hood, there seems to be a double standard. Anyways, keep the pics posting. Thanks! |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Look's and sounds cool. Try some cool TOW TABS on that bad boy. See pxtx for that.

Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Hey M,
You ran a 275/60 in your early posts , what tyre/rim/backspace are you running with the Mickeys? Im looking to run a pair of M/T's on some 7 or 8" steel rims/doggies. Have you narrowed the axle or modified the shock/wheel tub/lip? I have a 10 bolt , stock panels and want it lowered in the rear if I can. Like the tyre height with the 275/60 cheers Dave |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
No changes. Same size.
Rear is a Mickey 28x10x15 model 6640 Sportsman SR. Front is a 26x6x15 6652 I believe. The only mod to the rear was previous owner slightly cut the inner rear fender well maybe 1/4 ". There is less than 1/2" of space between wheel wells inner and outer. 10 bolt GM with .373s, Comp Eng drag shocks on all fours. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
it be lookin fine.

Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Thank you thank you.
I am tired of working on it for a while, I know that. Just trying to get everything possible done before the Power Tour. Here is the latest pics I took while taking an evening country cruise the other day- http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/Nova413_1.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/Nova413_2.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/Nova413_3.jpg |

Im in SoCal in 2 weeks time. Picking up my Stinger hood and some more goodies for my 72. Wheels n Tires are also on my list! cheers Dave |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Yes, I believe that is it. I know they are 8" rims, and the BS appears to be 5".
I was going to order new old school Centerlines, but they only make up to 4 3/4" BS. So I figured I would just leave it alone and run the Welds. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Took 1st place in my class (Big Street) at the local drags this weekend.
Surprisingly from a track car. He must have had trouble. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/1st%20place.jpg VIDEO-HERE |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Of course!!! 3 weeks until the Power Tour, and looks like I bent a valve, or something in the head went.
I am so ready to build out my next level engine. It will be fixed in time either way. Fix the head/valve issue, new set of heads, whatever. I am NOT missing the Power Tour! |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
No problems found. We think the bolts on the intake were not torqued correctly and they vibrated loose, allowing coolant to leak around into the valves/cylinder. This likely occurred during or after a weekend of running it down the track 8-9 times. There was no signs or sounds of trouble, until it fowled the plug while filling that cylinder with coolant.
Putting it back together now, flushing the oil, etc. Will find out for sure over the weekend. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
As a huge fan of 68-72 Novas I am digging your car. I had a 68 with a 327 I drag raced and sold, would love to have it back or build another one. Your stance is perfect. I ran a 15x8 with 5 1/2 backspace.

Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Thanks. Your pic above looks great too.
I got the car back together and completed the Power Tour with no trouble at all. 3553 miles total. IT was awesome, but not sure I would do it again, at least not without AC. PICS HERE |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Still running like a champ. Here is a shot of the front spoiler I fabricated from some brushed aluminum.
It came out pretty good and is very functional, pushing air up into the bottom of the radiator, and I prefer it over the fiberglass/plastic "Randys" ones. It will also cut any varmint in half that gets in the way! Material cost $7.00 at a swap meet, and a few hours fabrication in the home garage. (I put the M decal on it for a few days for the guy that I had to get to bend it on his metal break in his shop for appreciation) http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/Mspoiler.jpg |

Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
OH, P.S. Paul, Got the orange one off the rack and back home tonight.
I was very shocked at the small amount of change between the different gears; maybe 5mph. But it's still a blast to drive, and nice weather this weekend allegedly. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Ongoing work-
Finished the Dana rear. Yanked the 496 Dart out and found I was better off going ahead with the full swap. Skip White Performance 555 Dart being built, about a week from delivery at this point. Fully tweaked Brodix BB2 heads, all new everything from the Quickfuel 1050 down. I am going to stick with the 400 trans with brake for now, and add a Gearvendor behind it. Replacing the 4200 stall with a 3500, which is the minimum the cam calls for. New steering box, front end work, new 5 pt. harnesses, roll cage pads, new dual fans in shroud, etc. Just hope we can get it on the road by the end of this month and beat the 100+ temps! Pics will follow when done. Engine will be all black and aluminum, with a blue electric water pump. Should look pretty cool but still subdued. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Oh, and the red one was sold to someone on the NHRA Schumaker team.
Guess I need to update my picture. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Thag 496 didn't hang arou d long. Can't wait for all the updates and driving impression on the new car and combo.

Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Well it was more of a pending failure than a choice.
The car was built for the track, especially the engine. Even though it was putting 800=HP at the crank, it was on its last legs. This new one should be pushing 800 as well, with the heads and mods done. We keep hitting BS delays. Having trouble finding the right ARP head bolts for a Dart Big M block and Brodix BB-2 heads. Every other configuration in the world is in the books, except that one. It had studs previously that went into the water jackets. This new block does not. It just arrived Friday. Got a little done Friday evening before we got to the head bolt issue. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project3.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project5.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project10.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project11.jpg |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
Looking soo good and cool. Keep it up with the hot set up.
|
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
I'm trying my friend.
You know the story... cubic dollars. Built a distribution plate and mounted relays and stuff today. Mounted the new trans cooler, worked on a mock up of the new console. A little at a time. Once we get the right head bolts it will move pretty quick I think. We might have those resolved tomorrow if our local shop has ones that will work. We are having to measure and match to exactly what it needs. |
Re: Mayhems 71 Nova
UPDATE-
Got the correct studs in, heads on (with the layered gaskets at $153!!! Ouch), intake on, timing cover on, old valve covers on until final install into car, and oil pan on for mock up and to keep from dripping any oil. Also worked on new radiator and mounting into bay, numerous other mods. Hope to work on it every night this week and be done by Friday. http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project21.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project25.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project26.jpg http://blueicehouse.com/n5ssi/555Project28.jpg |
