Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
If you have room on the inside of the exhaust manifold and the engine......We can angle mill the exhaust manifold to sweep it in towards the engine to give the 02 sensor room......let me know......

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
It is pretty tight in there as well. I am going to look at some block hugger headers as well. That flange is HUGE

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
I would suggest you buy the repro 3/8th fuel line kit. It will run under the A-arm and get it away from the manifold. It also runs through the driveshaft tunnel rather than alongsifdde the frame (next to the RH exhaust). Otherwies you can expect vapor lock problems.

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
I was able to get in the shop yesterday for most of the day. Ordered a bunch of parts.....
Brake booster and master cylinder, tilt column, power steering box, radiator and fan assy., etc. Measured up to shorten the driveshaft. O.E. this puppy is in excess of 63" http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1792.jpg Getting the rear wheels out is no small undertaking. 285/35R-22. 30 inches tall and rather heavy! http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1797.jpg Did my initial install on the sway bars. I do not know if I would recommend these to anyone. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1801.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1799.jpg WTF? http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1800.jpg Wrong bushings for the front. I should have the right ones this week. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1798.jpg I am installing C5 Corvette brakes which I should have this week. I have determined I should use a 4.11 ratio gear set. If my math is correct, I will have a 65mph cruise RPM of just under 2100. As the parts come in and progress continues, I'll keep ya posted. I'll be at MCAN Saturday and Saturday night. Hope to see some of you! |

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
Brown dropped off more goodies yesterday and today! My front brakes arrived (rears next week), steering column, ECM bracket, and radiator. Plus, I fooled around with the Boshield I ordered. WOW! I can see why you guys are so revved up on Boshield. Thanks for the heads up Ken!

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
I finally had a chance to get back on to the 59 this weekend. The front brakes and upper control arms are installed, as is the new P.S. box. I also was able to mock up the brake booster / master cylinder to see how that all fits. I scored a 3.70 posi diff center section from a good friend for a song. Cleaned it up and installed it along with the shortened drive shaft I got back this week. Still waiting for the rear brakes . Hopefully that will show this coming week. Polished up the wheels over a few cold ones

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
I also had a chance to paint the radiator and snapped a pic as to how it sits now.
http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1833.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1839.jpg I have my tilt column mocked in and recieved all of my Dynamat this week as well. As soon as I get the rear brakes, I can make sure the rotors fit the axles properly. I can get it on the ground after that so I can move on to the wiring harness. Tim |

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
Hard for me to tell from the pics (it looks like it might be) but did you use the billet center driveshaft bearing support assembly?
Dad just went through a standard one in about 1,500 miles over the summer on the 62 409 car and evidenty the solution is the billet one. Looks great - love to see it in person. Jake |

Jake </div></div> No I did not. I had forgot about the billet bearings. The one on it is the garden variety that came from the people who shortened and balanced the driveshaft. I am going to pull everything back apart for right now I just have everything mocked up. Thanks for the reminder! Tim |

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
I've been slackin on the 59 lately. I'll get back on this ASAP.
I was out in the shop last night just to fill up the diff with lube, make a couple of brake lines, and I'll get some pics this weekend! |

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
Alright now. I'm back on it (kinda)
The brakes are all in. I recieved the fuel tank I had made from Rick's Hot Rod Tanks (nice). Now that the tank is mocked into place, I can start making the fuel lines plus mount the filter / regulator. Here are a few photos. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1992.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1991.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1998.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1989.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1996.jpg Plenty of room for the fuel lines http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1997.jpg I am sending the original speedometer to Classic Insturments for a conversion to electronic http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1994.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1993.jpg I am sending out the original radio for conversion so it looks a little more inconspicuous. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/100_1995.jpg After the fuel system, I need to make some spacers for the motor mounts and then start wiring |

Hey Tim - how's the build coming?
Jake |
Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
It's coming along........just a little slow. Been real busy with work. I'll get some pictures up here over the weekend. i'm in the process of wiring the engine & trans right now. The speedo is sent out for an electronic conversion. I should hve the A/C parts this week and have the front accessory drive finished soon as well.
Thanks, Tim |
Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
I spent today wiring, installing the accessory drive, and started installing Dynamat in the 59. Here are a few pics I snapped.

Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
With some inspiration from Ken (and custom parts) I took a few days off from work to make some progress on the 59.
Accessory drive installed and started to install the new A/C parts. I am going to run this in conjunction with the original underdash A/C unit. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/044-Copy.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/046-Copy.jpg The speedometer came back from Classic Insturments. http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...-Copy-Copy.jpg http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b437/napa68/047.jpg New motor mount plates. Solved everything! http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/045-Copy.jpg When I had the trunk mat out of the car to finish the harness for the fuel pump, I found these. Any on you see these before? http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/...8/050-Copy.jpg Tim |
Re: 1959 Bel Air Winter Project
Tim, did you get a chance to drive the car before/after the sway bar installation? I bet it made a huge difference as I've been messin' around with one of these larger X-frame cars myself and they do tend to kinda wallow around a bit. Especially the 6-cylinder cars because they didn't come with a front sway bar like the V8 models.
