Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Wait, what did the other M-22s go in? It seems like if someone was going to step up for the HD 4 speed they would have already checked L72.

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
The 6-10 figure has been out there for 20 or more years, so take it with a grain of salt. Although I think it refers to Biscaynes only, which might be close. 77 installs divided between Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala.

Estimated number of L72/M22 Biscaynes based on the total of 77. [/ QUOTE ] And that estimation was arrived at how? Sorry, but I believe it's more BS numbers being perpetrated over the years. It's one step removed from the "1 of 1" crap. |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Was the 77 estimate perhaps derived from the 'Engine production by Suffix' listings Fran Preve had?.
From what I remember of conversations I had w/ Fran his listings showed Tonawanda engine production by Suffix and he used to consider about 95% of the total were put into assembly line cars and the remaining 5% kept for service/warranty etc.. So if Engine production by Suffix was 81, assembly line production at 95% would be about 77 units?. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Pete, that line of thinking has occurred to me too, although with other brands. I really don't know - all I know is the number is published in the "Chevrolet SS Muscle Car Red Book," and I used my criticism of the M22 Biscayne number based on my understanding of how numbers work in Chevyland.

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Slightly on/off topic:
Does anyone know what headliner was originally in the '69 Bel Air or Biscaynes? Was it the Bedford or Basketweave? No one seems to be able to answer this for me. Thanks. |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
I can answer that when I get home, unless someone else beats me to it!
|
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Thanks! I think the Basketweave was used on the Bel Air and Biscayne, and the Bedford was used in Impalas & Caprices, but just wanted to make sure.

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Around 80-82 I lived in Topeka KS in the seabrook area there was a very clean blue 67 427 I had to of knocked on the door and asked if they would sell it a hundread times or so. I was in my early teens looking for my first ride, ended up with a 71 R/T Challenger alot of real cool cars in that area then... as posted earlier I believe it had a Van-T on it also.

Brian,
Does Joe still have one of the L72/M22 Biscaynes that he is restoring? Marc |

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Barry, the carpet is original.
|
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
My Biscayne has carpet. I think I remember sales brochure saying all big cars had carpet in '69. I've never seen a '69 with a rubber mat.
|
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
I never have either, But I was told that that may be the case. I think Ford did away with the rubber mats in the full size cars in '65. Every single '69 Biscayne I have ever looked at had carpet. Urban legend I guess..BKH
|
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
GM specifications lists carpet for all big cars in '69. My original window sticker has typed in on the bottom, "this car includes all these features astro ventilation, hide-a-way wipers, lighter, carpeting, front seat latches, front shoulder belts, head restraints". I thought there might be something special for taxi's and cop cars but couldn't find anything.

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
I'd like to know about the exhaust, also. Pretty neat car.
|
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
You know, I've asked him about the exhaust within an e-mail but he didn't reply to it. I'll have to press him a bit about it as I'm going to be in the market for one for my Bel Air.
|
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Tom... Sorry , I guess I did not reply to your email on the exhaust I put on my Biscayne. It was a couple of years ago when I got it installed. It is a 2 1/2 stainless custom job done at a local shop . I wanted it to have the right bends as original. This cars resto has taken a few years with numerous set backs . Had issues with the block , and the engine has been out 3 times.
Picking up the freshly painted 15x6 steelies today, and will have the tires mounted today as well. Have two sets of rims. Have the steels with poverty caps, and will also use ralley's with police caps. Both sets of rims are done in Frost Lime. |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Sweet car, loved watching the video https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Yuckie snow https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Actually , that's not much snow. Very little this year, but cold. Those pic's on youtube were when the car just was introduced to -20 degrees last week. It was waiting for the trailer and to get transported back to my place.
Won't be on the road till May . (Still needs the interior). |

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Can't wait to see this thing finished! Where did you find the 15X6 steelies? Do disk calipers fit under them? Also, what type of mufflers are you using? Are you going to with a wide oval tire? Sorry for all the questions, I want my 68 L72 to sound just like that!

Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
The Biscayne looks great Howard. You should have stopped by my place with the Biscayne since I'm 10 minutes away from there and you already had it in the snow anyway. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif

I just thought I'd give you a hard time. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif As you went for the original bends, I'm guessing your system is fairly close to the one Waldon's Antique Exhaust sells, aside from maybe your mufflers as I don't know what you put on there. Here's the Waldron's link for those interested: http://waldronexhaust.com/shop/produ...oducts_id=3938 Looking foward to seeing it completed. I just hope SMS doesn't take a year on the door panels. |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Here's a few pictures of my dads 69 L72 TH400 Bel Air. We dragged it back from Wyoming about seven years ago. Wish it were a 4 speed! It looks like the same color as Howards! If only I was a 69 guy.. lol

Just picked up the freshly painted rims today with fresh BF Goodrich 225/70/15's. I might run a wider tire on the rally's with Police cap later on. Not sure which will look better. As far as the muffler's make, it's been so long since they were installed ,I can't remember. |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Thanks for the info, Howard. I guess I need to find some YZ wheels for my 68 so I can run disks but retain the small hubcaps. I think your car will look great with either rim.
I just went through my database and found we have recorded 14 real 69 L72 cars in the last 10 years. Only five sedans! Steve |
Re: 1969 L72 Biscayne
Just bringing this thread to the top - here is a rare YZ 15x6 wheel dated August 1968. Thought someone may need it for their big-car resto. When I owned my L72 Biscayne I looked endlessly for a fifth YZ wheel, so I hope this helps someone.

Tony -- what kind/brand of paint did you use to refinish the wheel? Thanks ... TAZ
