Great story. I can't wait to see it after a light fluff and buff. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/drool.gif

On another note, the a build date of 06A, the VIN to this car would have to be close to the COPO motor I sold recently. The VIN on that block was 650498.

Re: Dave's New COPO

The pictures really are amazing! I get home from the White Hall Drag Strip Reunion yesterday to discover the biggest 'find' of the yearhere on my computer! Wow! I can't believe the equipment that was still in place on that car: the BE rear 12 bolt, the curved-neck radiator, and to think.........it was just advertised as a '69 Drag Car Camaro! The biggest shocker to me is that the leaf springs are still in their stock location with only slapper bars bolted to them! These cars started getting big rear tires and ladder bar rear suspensions in them in the very-early Seventies and this car somehow avoided the gas axe. I'd venture to say that there's no way this car was raced past 1972-3 because it just wouldn't have been competitive against the big-tire competition. That puts this car as possibly sitting for 36-37 years! I personally recognize that damage on the hood from the alternator belt flying off and striking the underneath of the hood. It's happened to me! Anyway, congrats on the find. When you think all of these cars have been grabbed up and discovered....something like this pops up. They are still out there if you look hard enough!

Awesome ride Dave!! Very Cool Time Capsule!!! Can't wait to see it live....

Rodenfels was originally located at 6376 Pearl Rd. in Parma Hts., Ohio and sold several COPOS.. The dealership became Bill Doraty Chevrolet and then sometime in the late 80s or early 90s Integrity Chevrolet took over and moved into the building.. The dealership is now defunct.. I don't know what will become of the building.. Probably be knocked down... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Doug asked me if I would slide over to the old dealership location and take some pictures of same.. I did this last night.. It's funny, I talked to the original owner of this car on the telephone and he stated that he remembered the dealership was next to a little greasy spoon restaurant called the Whip which is still there and in business... He stated his wife had worked there during the time he bought the COPO.

Sorry to HI JACK the thread Andy.........

Enjoy..... Rich https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3144.jpg

My Grandparents and Uncles lived only a few blocks from the dealership, I remember as a kid in the late 60's and early 70's driving by the dealership and looking at all the beautiful Corvettes behind the glass in the show room. It was a fantasy for me as a kid.

Glad to see such a time-capsule that originated there. Congrats Dave. Hope to see the car soon.

Another amazing find at this auction!!!

1 Attachment(s)
Had the pleasure of being there when everything was sold. A truly remarkable sale. I learned of everything over a year ago and my friend and I had several conversations with a family member prior to everything being sold. Unfortunately, my buddy and I took the story given to us by the family about the Camaro that it was born a six cylinder and we pretty much discounted the car, other than the fact that it was a super cool period drag car. My buddy and I had even joked about the possibilty that it could have been a COPO car months in advance. Due to the fact that there wasn't any documentation, and the (I guess now, incorrect) story we were told, we all but ignored it. Being mostly a Ford guy, and knowing Vettes, Camaros, Chevelles, etc fairly well, the first thing I went to on this car was the speedo, which to me was incorrect. 120 vs 140MPH. Spoke to Doug after the auction and learned this is accurate for a single-COPO, and only a double would have the 140 speedo. We had a couple people interested in the car, but of course, it passed the number we were thinking of fairly quickly. Everyone stood around in amazment quickly realizing that the car HAD to be something other than just a period drag car. The original owner stepping out of the crowd floored everyone once he told the whole story too.

While all the GM boys stood around enamored by the dollars that the Camaro, and 63 Fuelie Vette sold for, us Ford guys moved on to argueably the tie for the rarest other item sold at this auction. We had come for main one reason, the NOS crated Shelby parts (slightly incorrectly) advertised as "new left & right side quarter panels for a 1967 Shelby in original crate." There was probably more of a buzz about these parts around the auction than the cars, truthfully. I heard comments ranging from what people thought they would sell for, to people walking by saying "Shelby never made an aluminum Mustang!!" There in lies the story. The parts were not advertised as what they were. Most people were thinking "Shelby MUSTANG parts" in a crate. Guess what, they are not Shelby Mustang parts. They are ORIGINAL AC COBRA parts. The story we were given was that it was two rear quarters. Once we got to the auction, we ended up verifying that it was NOT two rear quarters, instead, it was the ENTIRE left side of an original AC Cobra. A NOS complete rear quarter, a NOS door shell, a NOS door skin, and a NOS front fender assy, and a NOS frt fender louver. They said they had interest and inquires from around the country, and opend the auction at $50K for these parts. We did not pay that, I will say that.

Folks, this stuff simply does not exist. This is one of the single rarest find of collector-car parts EVER, and for one of the most valuable collector cars out there in the market today. In most folks minds, these parts DO NOT EXIST. We already have some pretty remarkable interest and offers.

These parts were purchased for a wrecked (side swiped) AC cobra around 1970. The owner of the Cobra ended up getting impatient about waiting to get fixed, and he had the body shop just fix the damage, because it took too long for these parts to come in from England (many months we were told). Parts showed up in late 1970, the car was already fixed, and there was no use for the parts any longer. They have set in their original wooden shipping crate since 1970. A couple magazines have expressed interest in the find, and I am not posting all of the pics we have at this time with them out of the crate and all until this happens. Here's a shot of them in their crate of nearly 40 years from right after the auction ended. Thought you guys would appreciate the other remarkable find at this auction. Just goes to show that there are still some amazing things still out there in garages around the country. About the time everyone starts to think it's all dried up, stuff like this and the COPO surfaces. A fantastic day and super cool auction!

I feel that is a very personal question on how much the car sold for and please refrain yourself for asking such questions. I know Doug very well and I can tell you he is a very reserved person that doesn't like people digging into his personal finances and I amagine Dave is the same way. If you want a figure I can tell you it was a fair price, not a bargain but fair. Thank you, Mark

Re: Another amazing find at this auction!!!

Out of respect for the situation and mutual ties amongst close friends I will not disclose what was paid for the cars. But, my opinion is that it is of ZERO consequence in the future what someone paid for a given car, horse, house, cobra fender, widget or otherwise: it's worth what it's worth and what someone has in it simply does not matter. Point in question our cobra parts. I know within reason what they (could) be worth and I could give a rats butt if anyone knows what we paid for them. Truthfully they are soooo super cool that I would not consider selling them at ANY number right now. And I am sure Dave feels very much the same way about his super cool find. Congrats to all who attended the auction and walked away with something cool, no matter how rare it was or wasn't.
