Re: Fred Gibb Show '09

I had the pleasure to spend some time with a REAL '64 Hemi lightweight survivor a few years ago and those cars are amazing! The '64 Hemi cars even had lightweight aluminum doors that are just insanely light when you open and shut them. These cars are extremely fragile and were only intended to last a season or two and the fact that ANY of them survive 45 years later is simply incredible! Tears in the aluminum are common and elbow dents in the tops of the fenders from even changing spark plugs is to be expected. As neat as these aluminum front end cars are, like these early Hemi's, Z-11 Impalas, and Super Duty Catalinas, they really have to be nerve-racking and frustating to actually own!

I'm ashamed to say I came home with a TOTAL of 45 pix (including Monmouth & LaHarpe), ..................... and even though I was under the car four or five times I never had the camera with me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif And like Mark says, the doors are like lifting marshmallows.

Let's hope Brian can post some pix because as Rob said, this thing has a crazy exhaust system.

I do have a few interior shots I'll get to later this evening but Brian really needs to chime in and tell the story of this car. Trust me; it's ONE SPECIAL PIECE!

We all tried to put some pressure on him to bring it to Rosemont in November, .................... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

One of my favorite features on these '64 Hemi cars is the factory installed Magnesium 5-spoke Americans. Yeah "FACTORY INSTALLED!" How cool is that? These are my all-time favorite wheels and I've turned down some SERIOUS money for the set on the front of my '62 Biscayne.

Thanks for the extra photos, Mr. Cumby! I like the close-up shots of the modified grille to accomodate only two headlights instead of the usual four! We will never see factory-offered race cars like this ever again.

Suffice to say this is one of the neatest cars ever built and I have waited many months to finally see it in person since hearing the "rumor". I was not disapointed as it was everything I expected and more. Brian was gracious enough to spend many minutes giving me not only the history of this car but the history of "these" cars and in the mean time I learned a LOT of things I did not know about them. One of my friends restored one of these same type of cars when we were going to Dunwoody Industrial Institute back in 1981 and I now have to find him and put Brian in touch with him. He also owns one of the very few Hemi cuttaway motors. He is from Minneapolis and his first name is Steve but I cannot remember his last in case anyone knows of him. Same color combination if I recall. Anyway, thanks for bringing the car Brian. As you can see it was well received and is a MUST SHOW in Chicago this November. We especially loved the sounds you made when you were putting the car into the trailer! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Brian, I'd love to know what the front and rear tires are on that Hemi. (VERY COOL car by the way) Exceptional preservation of history.
Thanks

http://www.hurstracingtires.com/1093440.html Verne, I'm pretty sure those are Hurst Racing Tires, front and rear. They are re-caps made and sold by the link I posted here. I do like those front tires with the ribs spaced out and I'm gonna buy a set of those soon for something here.

Re: Fred Gibb Show '09

You are correct, the fronts are from Kelsey, the rears are custom from Hurst. The car was sold new at Ratcliff Motor Sales in Chillicothe Ohio. They received two cars. A great deal of the resto was done by Akron Arlen Vanke one of the most famous Chrysler race drivers ever. The motor is the original 64 race Hemi. It has the aluminum hood, scoop, fenders, front bumper brackets. doors, hinges, window mechanisms etc. Those are the original front American real mags to the car. It still has the very unusual 64 only race headers under the car. There are many trick items that Dodge did to these cars like a special rear Corning back glass, special shock towers, move the battery to the back etc. The car came with Chrysler Historical documents, and a letter from Galen Govier about the car, and a lot of pictures from the restoration. I had asked for the help of such notable Hemi owners as Don Fezell and had factory race car collector Tommy Lee Austin inspect the car for me. It is in the 64 Race Hemi Registry that Darrell Davis keeps. It was the ONLY 64 Hemi S/S car to ever have a heater. I have most of the parts, but it was restored without the heater. Sort of an odd option. They built 55 Dodge S/S cars in 1964..BKH

As usual, had a great time at the Gibb show. A lot of neat cars, but as always, the best part, spending time with friends.

Not much more to say about Brian's Hemi, except WOW!

Afte getting my trailer out of the bunker at the La Harpe golf course, (thanks everyone for the help) Diana and I were off to Michigan for the Medowbrook Concours, arriving at 5:30am, just enough time to shower/shave and then off to the show field. Lots of cool cars, including Mark Hassett's Yenko Chevelle. Ran into a few old friends, and met several new ones. The best part, I met a gentleman who has put me in touch with Bob Hamilton, JR, whose dad owned/raced Red Alert.

I can't remember exactly how the T-bolt setup looks, but the Hemi pieces above are basically a steel flange w/ pipe downstream...the wacky thing is they used a funky crossover (simliar to a W31 setup) to mate up to the *single* exhaust...S/S in those days required the exhaust be in place, but it didn't have to be functioning!
