Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
One of the many sections of a Camaro website that I have been working on putting together for a while is a drag race section. This weekend I started to clean up some of the pics that will be used. Some are not final shots and are literally pictures pf pictures at this point as I am waiting for true scans so quality is not always great but figured some of you may like them. Also if anyone would like to contribute any pictures for use on the site of any year Camaro please feel free to contact me.
1. 1967 Camaro L78 convertible, true day two pic as it is literally the day after it was bought. The paper in the rear quarter window is actually the window sticker. This car would go on to become the BatCar setting numerous NHRA and AHRA records and winning numerous championships under both race drivers in its career. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...batcarday2.jpg 2. Early front launch shot of the BatCar. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...atcarearly.jpg 3. Rear shot of a launch of the BatCar http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...tcarlaunch.jpg 4. Color shot of the first BatCar paint scheme taken at Englishtown NJ in early 1968 http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...shtown1968.jpg 5. Picture of the BatCar after receiving the Rod Shop paint scheme, yes the Rod shop of Hemi fame, this is one of the beasts that put them on the map. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...carrodshop.jpg 6. BatCar after it left the Rod Shop and went to it's next owner http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...fterrshopb.jpg 7. Another shot after the Rod Shop. The other 67 that you can see in the top left corner is an L78 Pace car that was raced out of Canada. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...fterrshopc.jpg 8. Everyone loves anything that says Grumpy's Toy http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag.../igrumpysa.jpg 9. Dick Harrel, what more needs to be said. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/dragracing/kharrel1.jpg 10. A car that I know nothing about, reportedly taken at Englishtown, NJ. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/dragracing/mmimia.jpg 11. Mr. C's 67 L78 also reportedly taken at Englishtown but am not sure of this for a fact. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/dragracing/nmrcsa.jpg 12. An unknown 67 SS 350 car, track unknown to me. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag.../punknown1.jpg 13. A 68 coupe and 67 ragtop head to head. Again unknown track and am not sure of the names on the cars. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag.../qunknown2.jpg 14. Little Giant 1968 Z-28 awaiting a new motor. http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/drag...ant68zin69.jpg I will try and post a few more later on if people are interested or they can see everything once they go up on the site but that may be months off yet. So far the only part that has much in it is the vintage advertising section. |

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Well, if you are going to crash the grand daddy of all Yenko Camaros do it right and Dick Harrell did just that in 1967. He was not injured in this crash thankfully.

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
------What great pics these are. Thanks!!! Im almost sure I saw the "Batcar" Camaro in its original livery back in the day. Probably at 42 although I got to Columbus quite a bit while at Ohio U.
------And that Camaro shot with the Mopar in the backround sort of reminds me of 42 back in the day. "Dragway 42" isnt any more modern today but they have changed around a bunch of stuff like the starting line, tower, etc.......Bill S |

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
The "Batcar" is alive and well, still owned by 2nd owner. It's a really neat stripper black convertible with gold interior restored back to stock configuration. Car was ordered to be heater delete car but it got the heater.

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Thank you Chevy454, any corrections or further information is appreciated. I would prefer to have more than just the pics on the site and include some info with them. For the names I am going by what is on the cars at the moment and will be the first to admit that there are many more knowledgeable about the actual history of the particular cars than myself.
Yes the BatCar is alive and well rolling around with a mere 1495 miles on it. The owner even made it out to the Nationals in Carlisle this year but for all the coaxing I could not get him to bring the car out with him and show it. I have become pretty good friends with the owner and was able to go out and photograph the car very extensively and interview him for the site getting many great stories of the car and racing in the day from him. Truly a great guy. |

How did you get a Petersen pic? The mags are pretty serious about their property so I'd keep that one on the d-l...seriously!

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
This Strickler "Old Reliable" and Dick Arons 67 Camaro photo was taken at the 1968 NHRA World Finals in Tulsa, OK on Oct 20, 1968. This was the semi final round in Super Stock eliminator. Strickler went on to beat his team mate, Bill Jenkins in the final round for the World Championship title.

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Didn't he beat Ed Hedrick in Grumps 1968 SS/D nova? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Wow such cool pics.Do you have any Sec. Gen. Camaro pics ???
|
Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
No, Hedrick was driving the Camaro. Jenkins drove the Nova that year in Super Stock.

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Anyone know what became of 'da Grump's 1st generation Camaros? I asked him a few years ago at the York show but he did't seem like he wanted to talk about it.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Go figure! He did mumble something about the '69 being around the Pittsburgh area.

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
The '67 pictured above is alive & well in KC with the Kimballs...
|
Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
I believe Brooklyn Heavy owned the 1968 car after Grump sold it. Wish I knew where the 69 car was and also Stricklers 1969 Z/28. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Carmen had the 68...My dad has a lot of stories about that one. It was the strongest 12 bolt they had ever seen...They thought the ring and pinion was heat treated or something..it never broke. Also the front wheels were staggered...it allowed the car to move first...and not red light. there were a few other tricks..ill have to ask my dad.

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
I think Dana Mecum bought the 67 L78 Camaro this past year. I know that L. Kimball wanted one million for it. Don't know what the actual sales transaction was.
Jenkins sold the 68 L89 Camaro to Carmen Rotonda and it's location is not known. The 69 L78 is also still missing in action. Jerry |
Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Kim,
What year Z28? I only run the registry on the 67 cars. Have been doing so now for 20 years. We have just about 200 cars now. 1/3 of the population. Larry Eakin does the 68 Z28s. Jerry |
Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........

Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
Actually working on picking up a 67 strip car right now. Pretty cool little car, not cut up too badly....has been on the strip for many, many years. Still titled and can be licensed for street with minor fixes.
Any price range thoughts on something in *decent* shape, automatic (6 cyl car originally), all plexi windows, glass hood, fuel cell, MSD, cage, tubbed with Ford 9inch, no rust? Want to make sure I don't make a mistake....looks like a helluva lot of fun! Also, looking for a vintage paint scheme to run on it. What would you make it look like, if you had one? Also, looking for vintage rims to run on the car. |
Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
I like lace paneling for the paint scheme. On the white stripes and the sail panels? Maybe even on the quarter panels, doors and fenders? Get out the old drag magazines. Good luck with it! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Mark [/ QUOTE ] Jerry posted above he thought Larry finally sold the car to Mecum within the last year...can anyone confirm/deny that? I can't recall that the car was @ the KCIR nostalgia event, but I've slept a couple time since then...and, when we asked him about bringing to the SCR years and years ago, he wanted big money just to haul it across the state. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif |

With the talk of the SD Tempest on Ebay, I thought this picture was appropriate...I snagged this from the HAMB site...it's Beswick's SD wagon @ the Chi-town ampitheatre...indoor drag racing, what's NOT to love! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Leave it to those Chi-town folks to get their racing fix...no matter what! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
Re: Old Drag Car Pictures.........
2nd owner of my S/S ran at the Amphitheatre a few times. They closed it after one too many racers had encounters with the concrete posts. Go figure! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

One of the coolest projects we ever were involved with was the Dick Arons/Gordy Foust/ Berger Chevrolet SS/E Camaro. The last picture shows Gordy and Dick at Arons shop in Detroit were we debuted the car...BKH
