Re: U-S-A-1 plate

I communicated this thread to Jim Rohn of Phoenix and the following was his response........

"this was bought at Courtesy Chevrolet in Phoenix in 1977, the 1st year I moved here

Tim Blaylock (sp?) was the parts guy I bought it from, I think he is at Thorobred Chevrolet now

They had two types, the "disco" stars and stripes and this one

I bought both

both were shrink wrapped and both I still have (well, just the stars&stripes now)

I have had a slew of "do-gooders" telling me their opinions

some of the earlier versions I understand (from the do-gooders) were metal with a painted back (either white, green or blue, depends on who the "expert" is) and would rust when they got chips on the face

All of what I listed is factual as this was sold at a GM dealership 30 years ago.

Any other intrepretation/opinions of the facts are just that."

Jim Rohn says he bought THE EBAY plate in question in 1977.
I have no interest in any of this, other than my wanting to verify the honesty or integrity of the seller.

Thanks,

I bought a similar plate about 30 years ago from the chevy dealer in Baldwin (Lyon Chevy). I think it was $5.00, it has the big slots for the bolts, I still have it.
I also have one with the paint on the back. I'll sell both for $202.50 with free shipping and Saran wrap. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

(they have thirty plus years of road wear) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

I should have kept the Baldwin receipt, it would be worth more!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

I believe his ad is factual based on his purchase at the dealer. Though not the same as the older plates shown by MosportGreen, are they not NOS if purchased from Chevrolet?

now here is some junk; http://cgi.ebay.com/Chevrolet-License-Pl...bayphotohosting
can you find the error? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

In a word, no. If I buy a made in Taiwan repro part through a Chevy dealership, its still a Taiwan repro part. I'm very surprised they even repro'd these in 1977, let alone sold them at Chevy dealerships...If anyone wants one like that I can get as many as you want in Carlisle next week for 5.00 a pop. FYI, NOS GM plates weren't shrink wrapped, the gold ones nor the red/white/blue ones, so both of the ones mentioned are repros. P.O.S. maybe, but not N.O.S.

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif I can't tell you if it is repro'd or re popped, banged out in SingSing or cooked on a waffle iron in the staff lunch room, but I can say for sure it was sold at the Chevy dealer in 77 or early 78 at the latest.
It saddens me to think I've had that 4NJNK on a dozen cars over the last thirty years.

Re: U-S-A-1 plate

Chris that plate is missing the Apostrophe S after America..

Today I can buy this that same $202 Ebay plate at my Chevrolet dealer $6.00
It is nothing more than a variation off the original vintage design and not an authentic Original Vintage period plate.
In short,it's a later knock off, albeit sold through a Chevrolet dealer.
To add to what others have stated, other easy knockoff giveaways are the fact that it has the Chevrolet Bowtie emblem and See Americas First slogans embossed.
The originals were flat there, not to mention it's showing the aftermarket makers mark on the bottom left corner.
To be fair, the seller did not state "Vintage" and he did post very clean, clear, close up pictures to show the buyer what he is actually getting.
NOS does not automatically mean 40 years old.
I would hold the buyer to that amount.
