Re: Using rectangular port intakes on oval port heads
Steve,
------Mike Hanson worked with me at Classic Motors way, way back in the dinosaur age.He knows his stuff,,,,period. He was the one mechanic we had that could diagnose fuelie problems from across a room or at all for that matter. He also had quite a history back in the early Z/28 era dragracing same. GM used to send him some very interesting stuff. Very, very sharp guy!!!........Bill S |

Bill,
I didn't know Mike was a Z/28 guy! I'll have to talk to him about that at some point. You're right - he is sharp! Steve |
Re: Using rectangular port intakes on oval port heads
I put my 67 L78 car together in primer last month just to have some fun for the summer. I didn't have my correct motor ready so I got a motor that had 72 oval port heads. I bolted my L78 intake on and I'm getting the same results. I'm not a big block guy but this thing feels very strong for just a pump gas motor.

Honestly,
With all the really nice cars represented here by members, I almost passed on posting this topic for fear that it would be "beneath" members. Wow! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Shocked again! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif Steve |

[/ QUOTE ] The more people that respond to this thread, the more amazed I become. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif Well, to be more specific, I am starting to believe that there may be some kind of "special" relationship between the rectangular port intake & the oval port heads. This phenomenon may not be the same with other set-ups. It just seems to smack in the face of: Who would've thought that would happen! When I think of all the books and magazine articles I've read over the years about engine building & especially port matching, etc. I have to laugh. Kind of makes you really wonder about what is true, and what is nice to have. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif I sure wish we had some of the Chevy Engineering Staff from "back in the day" to bounce this off of. Oh well...... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Steve |
Re: Using rectangular port intakes on oval port he
I'm sure when you get up into the high horsepower stuff say 500+ , it becomes much more critical. But on the average 300-400hp big block it doesnt seem to matter.I had a dart oval intake on my 600 hp bracket 454,and picked up a full .01 and 1.5 mph going to a squareport victor jr.My new motor makes closer to 700hp and i'm sure my old oval dart wouldnt keep the pace.
