Re: Off to Carlisle...
Let's also not forget that many of these "rare" and "hard to find" parts just simply aren't trading hands anymore. Many of them are being hoarded away by collectors or being used on restoration projects. With each passing year the cars and parts we all covet become that much older, scarcer, and more in demand. Can you blame a vendor for not having the same top quality original parts year after year? Hardly, especially considering everyone who's participated in this thread has something "good" they bought at Carlisle either tucked away on a shelf somewhere or bolted to a car they've restored. The bottom line is, there just isn't much "old stuff" to be discovered anymore, it's getting used up. The days of entire late 60's early 70's era cars being dismantled and being sold for parts are near over. "Parts cars" of yesteryear are today's "project cars" which only increases the demand for parts. The pickings are indeed getting slim, and it's certainly noticable at places like Carlisle where good vintage parts used to be everywhere, but it's not Carlisle or even swap meets in general that are to blame for the change, it's just the passing of time. Just like you don't find the good old parts in boneyards like you used to, you don't find them at swap meets anymore either. Be glad that Carlisle remains as unchanged as it does...it's still a great place to spend a day hoping you'll find that elusive part, even if the odds are stacked increasingly against your finding it.
As for the days of going to Carlisle to buy a nicely restored car at a proper market value...well that's another story. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif |
Re: Off to Carlisle...
Marlin,Joe and Erik hit the nail on the head I still go to them all you sometimes luck onto something you need at a fair price but you better be there when they move in the stuff, you guys have probably been laughing at me and my goofy 4dr cars I have been dragging home.. but up here...it has almost dried up for old cars lying around ..these cars are invaluable for all the correct bolts, screws and such we need for the 2dr cars we love so much.

Re: Off to Carlisle...
I agree with the group that Carlisle "ain't what she used to be" all the rare/hi-po stuff goes on ebay where even the uneducated will get top dollar for thier parts without leaving the house. I did pick up a "6060AP" 70 LS6/L78 W/P pulley in a pile of parts but that was about it, paid a good price for it, but didn't get it for nothing ( if anybody is interested in it, I need an orig 1105 P/S pulley)I mutual friend of the group mentioned that he found a MARCH 70 dated 4557 Holley guy wanted $900, he passed and naturally it was gone immediately. For those of you that know the scarcity of that date/number, $900 is practically free. As lame as it was, I will probably go again next year... SULLY

Re: Off to Carlisle...
I have an 1105,& would have traded you for that 4557. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
Would you have a pair of 178 & 879 Post Aug.69 dated Ex. Manifolds? |
Re: Off to Carlisle...
For a March 70 4557, you would have to have a dozen 1105's.!, that date is extremly rare, heard it was the last assembly line date Chevy used for the late 70 L78's and LS6's. As they are getting $1500.00 for Jan 70 4557's now, I can only imagine what a March 70 would go for. I don't currently have any manifolds fitting your bill, but if you are interested in unloading the 1105, let me know. Thanks for your interest.
