Vern,

You are so right about the extra options showing up on all the 57 - 60 model cars. I will have to say that this is really one nice restoration. It is kinda a Baby blue inside and out. I am anxious to see it finished.

Any Idea what this car would be worth? 348 ci 3x2's 3 speed (GR retard) auto. Power top.

I think I have a couple air cleaner elements for those 3x2 setups......

Pantera,
I'd agree that the '57-'60 models seem to attract a LOT of extra options and dealer accessories. I think '58 is the high water mark ('59 a close second). You mentioned 3-speed, but then said GR (grade retarder). That would make it the Turboglide trans, which "technically" does not shift at all. It works like that TurbineDrive trans in a '63 Riv. Never really shifts, just changes torque converter pitch (or perhaps it's done with internal cones..?). The "GR" gear is a gear that's not in use when starting out normally. It can be selected intentionally for compression braking or driving in the snow. Many of those transmissions have blown up from guys holding them in GR for fast acceleration, then throwing it into Drive. The trans doesn't like that much....

As far as value, I'm having a hard time keeping up with some of the craziness that's happening recently, but for a #1 well done car, especially a convt., I'd guess about $85K, but then, things could go over the top!

By the way, air cleaner elements are the same for early Pontiac 3x2, early Buick 2X4, '58-'61 348 3X2, and '62-'64 409 2X4. I "think" the 3x2 air cleaner base is being repopped, but not for the A/C car. And no '58-only starburst lid is being done. It might be a tough hunt.

Turboglide is what I was trying to think of. I was just unable to think of what they called it while I was typing it. I remember a friend had one in his 57 and we blew it up doing just what you described. I was lucky my mothers 57 that she gave me when I turned 16 was a 220 hp w/powerglide.

Funny but I stil own the house where we lived when I pulled that dam thing out when I blew it up. The floor is still dark where the tranny slid off the floor jack and dumped burntup auto fluid everywhere and even down the driveway. Boy did I get it for that one.

Funny you mention the $85,000 price as that is what he has a offer for it when it is done. Told me he was thinking of taking it. Too many cars and no place to store it. If I was him I would get rid of the little car/boat(brain fart again can't think of the name) he has and keep the 58.

Thanks for the reply

If he needs more storage space just tell him to tie the Amphicar up at the dock https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

Now, there's a car that might have a sinking value.................

I can't remember where I saw it, but I've seen one on some car somewhere along the line, but the jar was inside the car, mounted over by the passenger door along the kick panel. I had no idea what the heck it was, so I asked the guy and he said it was a vaccum operated ashtray. And I thought he was crazy . . . https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

That is the name that I couldn't put my finger on. He has a tag that says ""SS KEN" I think it looks cute but I would still keep the ragtop over that one.
