I bought a new Z on Jan. 11 of 74. I sold it six months later for a 69 Vette. I still have the window sticker for it though. It was red with a white vinyl top and decals. Similar to the one pictured above. Cream color interior though. LT package 4 speed. Cool car. I saw it in 86. A girl owned it at the time. She had it parked in a Pizza Hut parking lot. I spoke to her briefly and she said it was drinking oil. I just chuckled. It used a qt every 500mi when it was new. Maybe it will pop up and I can give the window sticker to the owner.

Yup,the 74 Z is for real.The 74 is an interesting car and I am a big fan of the 74 and have plans on owning one someday.The 74 was the last year for the early back window and the only "big bumper" camaro to have the early glass,as well as the only one made without a cat convertor.This makes it an easily distingushable 1 year only car.
My plans are to build a car that never was.I want to build a 1974 camaro SS 454 just as GM would have done it.My combo would be similar to how they built the 74SD 455 firebird formulas.I want the car as a driver so I dont want a raical hot rod anyway.My combo was to build a plain jane 74 with a rear spoiler and flat hood.The engine would be a low compression 454 built to 74 corvette specs,but of course I would blueprint it a bit for more power,and things like the cam might be substitued for something more modren,but it would be a smog era large oval port 454 with an iron intake and Qjet and manifold.It would have a super T10 4 speed and a 3.42 geared 10 bolt.I might add some afrtermarket internals to the rear to help it live with some hard driving,but nothing too trick.The chassis would have no real trick stuff.Maybe poly body mounts,and heavy duty aftermarket sway bars,springs and shocks,but no traction bars or frame connectors or anyting that would look not stock.The car would be detailed to look as if it was built at the factory and I would try to convert any details such as chalk marks or tags in a manner that might have been done had GM built the car using the special parts that this car would require.When it was done I would set it down on a set of slotted mags with 15x8's all around to give it a period correct look.The 74 is a one of a find year an I want one to make my one of a kind supercar.Dont let the "big bumper are worthless and ugly" crowd talk you out of buying one.A few years ago I saw a 74 Z in a garage under restoration.It was a blue car with white stripes on it,and was an L82 4 speed car.The car was rough,but seeing it parked nose into the garage with that flat rear glass totally sold me on owning one.If you want it,I say go for it.Good luck.

I hope they're real. I've owned one for 24 years now. It's got just over 35k miles on it and has a turbo 400 with 3.73's. It's sort of a time capsule. I really haven't done that much to it since I bought it except detail the engine compartment. I tracked the 2 previous owners down to learn as much as I could about the car. The wheels and front tires were put on by the original owner. I asked the first owner about the paperwork that the car came with. He said it was all in the glove box when he sold it. The second owner told me that he threw it all out because it got wet when he was washing the car. If I could have reached through the phone and slapped him I would have. I never understood how or why he did that. The car originally came with the D88 stripe package. The original owner removed them and added the fender emblems. The nice part is that he was going to put them back on and he ordered a new kit which he still had along with 2 of the original wheels. I made a deal and left with the parts. The car needs paint now and I hope to get that done sometime in the near future. I think that I'll put the stripes back on the car so it'll be as new. According to the numbers that are available there were 128,798 1974 V8 Camaro's built. 13,802 were Z28's, 6,978 came with the D88 stripes. I think Paul S. still remembers how it went through the gears with the shift kit (1st owner installed). Here's how it sits today.

Now that I think about it I have seen these '74 Z/28s before, but I probably haven't spotted one in over a decade.

What color is the stripe package with the brown exterior? Is it white &amp; black?

I'd like to see it when you stripe it.
Do you drive this car daily?

Brown? Actually the exterior color is Light Gold. It's a nice bright and clean looking gold in person. It doesn't always show correctly through a camera. This color was used in some of the Camaro brochures. Some other gm golds have more of a bronze look to them.

As for the stripes, there was only one kit. They were all the same color: black, red and blue on a white background. I read somewhere on-line that the white background was a mistake and it was supposed to be clear. I don't think that is true. It wouldn't show well on a dark car. I'm not saying I wouldn't like it, but I doubt GM wanted to hide the stripes on a dark colored car. Here is a close-up of a rear stripe from a car that was just on e-bay:

No, it's not my daily driver. I have a Honda Civic that does all that. I've only put 8,000 miles on the car in 24 years. If I was driving this daily in California, the odometer would have spun around a few times. It still has the original brake shoes in it. There was a brown metallic color for Camaros that year, code 59 and a bronze, code 66. My car is light gold metallic, code 53. As Paul said there was only 1 stripe kit and was had a 4 color scheme, red, white, blue and black. As you can see in the picture that Paul posted the stripes themselves and the "Z28" were in black on the white background. The numbers letters and the stripes were highlighted by red outlines. The outer most stripe at the edge of the decal is blue. It's looks darker in the photo than it actually is. Here's a picture of the NOS stripe. It's the part that goes on the rear spoiler. The backing paper makes it a little tough to see the colors real well, but you can see that the outer border is blue, then white, red, white and then the black for the main stripes.
