I'm still researching headers for my '67 Chevelle L78 Engine Build. For the dyno, and to stay as close as possible to my old M/T SS Headers 50+ years ago, I have been comparing the primary tubing layout of the Hooker Competition Headers with the photo of my orange M/T Headers (above) before I installed them. They are amazingly similar, especially on the driver side. Oh, the M/T's were so simple (thanks to the long collector with staggered lengths of primaries entering the large collector). If only someone still made accurate Super Scavenger Headers today!
Any thoughts on the Hooker 2455HKR Competition Headers? 2" primaries with 3.5" Collector dia. (just like on the M/T Headers). They are relatively inexpensive at $263.95 from Summit. I prefer the painted version, as I have an outstanding high temp header paint in satin black that I want to use. I'm just concerned about fitment. My M/T's fit like a glove (even back way before cadd design)! You'd think header manufacturers would have it together by now, thus avoiding install issues. Any input appreciated. Thanks guys! |
I have bought two sets of the Mickey Thompson Scavengers now being offered by Nathan Schmidt at Sweet Ave Fabrication in Bismarck, North Dakota. He has also sold many sets to other guys here on Yenko in the past 2/3 years.
He bought the original M/T Dies from Bruce in Indiana and has been hand making the tubes and flanges to join into the collectors ever since. Amazing craftsman, great fitting headers and a sound like no other. He also ceramic coats them which is just so cool as they change colors to tomato red when they get hot, and back to bright orange when they cool down. Call him up and tell him Graeme says hello. His shop phone is +1 701-471-3350 and he has a Facebook Page as well. https://www.facebook.com/Sweet-Ave-F...9946468092467/ https://i.ibb.co/9cBdP3T/Engine-bottom-looking-back.jpg |
Thanks! I will give him a call. I believe I may have corresponded with him a while back thru eBay when he had the SS M/T Collectors on eBay. He didn’t make the entire headers at that time as I recall. So he was able to get the dies from the guy in Indiana? That’s great! Nice pic btw! I painted mine VHT White back in the day. I never had any issues with those headers and they tucked up nicely when installed...they were not too low!
There really isn’t anything like the sound when Super Scavengers are installed, especially with solid lifters! 😉 |

And here's my most recent build. A cool 69 Z/28 with another set of these orange headers from Nate. |
Wowza I had no idea someone reproduced them. I’ll be calling him also. Thanks Rob

Here's the first set he made for me. They were mocked up on a dummy block that was set into a Camaro subframe before being hand built and beautifully welded. I ended up using them in the Nova and they fit with perfect clearance as well. Nathan is a wickedly talented fabricator who totally gets it. And he can have them ceramic coated in any color from what I was told. Most people now go with a flat orange. The ones shown below were a semi gloss. I had him add exhaust bungs to each set so I could tune the car using an exhaust gas analyzer to read the A/F ratio.

There are some great YouTube sound clips for anyone unfortunate enough to have never heard a set of these. It’s a very unique and very cool sound!
