Sad news and another great one gone but still lives on through his music. Saw them a few times also loved the VanHagar stuff too but man, that first album was unbelievable when it hit back in '78. RIP . |

Was privileged to hang out with Eddie and Valerie at a John Waite/Patty Smyth/Scandal concert in Ca in November 7th, 1984
Won tickets on KMET (The mighty MET) and took my future wife Lynn as well. The concert was at the Hollywood Palladium. At first I didn't even know who he was...as he was wearing a Manny, Moe and Jack Pep Boys T-shirt. Also, his hair was really short-it was a buzz cut! I recognized Valerie right away-as she was on One Day at at Time. John Waite called Eddie up on stage to jam with him...it was cool! EDIT: here's some info : http://www.vhtrading.com/topic/scand...ddie-van-halen Attachment 175627 |

Some old early Van Halen pics
First from Derek S. Attachment 175640 Second one from the Van Halen archives...kinda cool Attachment 175641 By the way, I asked Eddie why his hair was so short (after he got done up on stage and before he left with Valerie) he said it was easier to walk around LA-without being noticed immediately. Worked on me!! Finally, he seemed really shy to me-which is the opposite of what his onstage persona was...? Eddie-Thanks for all of the great music! :beers: |
I think the 1984 was at Cobo.
My first display house I worked at, I found red and white plexi in the rack, I learned how to weld it that day, I made diver down Lic plates for all my buddy’s, lol. When I did the LA auto show, one year a Bud took me to Whiskey Go Go, there’s a plaque in the lobby area for Van Halen, they were like the house band and was discovered there I believe by Gene Simmons. |
Bruce, those must have been some epic times! I've been a fan of Patti Smyth for as long as long as I've been a fan of VH and I'd love to have been at that concert.
I did see VH in 1982 with Diamond Dave at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. Free tickets through a buddy's dad where we got to sit in the Super Box, and that concert was almost life changing. I was just a stupid kid into old regular pop music that was on the popular radio channels, with only some rock interest, but after that, I expanded my tastes into some of the harder rock and VH has always remained one of my favorites by far. I hate to say it, but DLR really kind of stole the show (he'd probably be proud to hear that, lol) and I wasn't mature enough to understand the legend who played before me. I do now, and his loss hurts. I know that EVH was remarried, but Valerie Bertinelli's Instagram said that she and their son Wolfgang were holding him when he passed away. I guess their love was always there in spite of their breakup. May he Rest in Peace. |
