Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova
I remember a lot of guys in the early 1980s just running glass packs off of the headers (or not too far back), and pipes that came off of the mufflers at a 45 deg angle exiting just in front of the rear tires. The same 'look' as AAR Cudas / T/A Challengers had from the factory. Dumping the exhaust under the car wouldn't pass PA state inspection, but having the tailpipes clear the rocker just in front of the rear tires was perfectly legal.
The glass packs I remember most guys using were the rounded case models like the purple hornies shown above, not the thrush style above with the rolled ends. Walker "Royal Scot" was a popular model - they were painted a dark red color. |

Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova
A word to the wise -- if you hang those Purple Hornies off the back of the header collector (no tail/extension pipes), make sure there is a hanger on the end of the mufflers. No hanger and you'll constantly be tightening the header bolts. Just sayin' ...

FWIW, I ran it that way for 20 years on a SBC...never had a problem. Then again, I had ground the header flanges (welds) true and used good bolts & gaskets.

Sometimes that weight also cracks the headers. I ran them like BIG most of the time. Depends on how big and heavy the mufflers are. Plus, who really cared back then. Brent has a good idea how he supported his header mufflers. Maybe he will share. |
Re: DAY 2 EXHAUST SYSTEM for Camaro/Nova
So true Sam! Mine have dents in them to change the plugs and also to clear the AC box (flattened out a whole tube). A BFH was used to persuade the pipes. Didn't matter back then...make them work so you could drive/race it. Cheap and easy...not always right, but that's how it was done.

Absolutely! Most of the "Day 2" replica cars of today are way to nice but that is how it has to be done these days.
