Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks

My 69 Z/28 came with a ducted hood.

And yes, GM sold many more over the counter than they did in 1969.

This ad specifically calls out SS and Z28 availability.

About 2 years ago noted Camaro Guy Larry Christensen examined a survivor 12C LA Z/28 built with ZL2. ZL2 is noted on the BBC.

ZL1s #1 & #2 were built at Norwood and had 12E tags.

No telling exactly when they rolled off the assembly line but it may be that a Z/28 was the first ZL2 car built.

I would say most Z/28's came with flat hoods. There were only 10,000 some ducted hoods available and all the COPO's, and the big and small block pace cars got them so that left the rest for the SS and Z/28 cars. Don't think they appeared till late, late December or early January of 69.

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks

I have seen estimates of approx 10% of the Z/28's with ducted hood. Of the 10,000 hoods, all the Z11 and Z10 cars got it. I believe there were less than 4000 of those combined. Pretty sure all the 200 Yenkos got it. Also all the other COPO cars and the 69 ZL1's. So, now you are down to like 5000 spread across SS and Z/28. Even if NO SS cars got it (but of course, some did) that only leaves 5000 for the 20,000 Z's (of course there are 40,000 69 Z/28's for sale today). So... by extrapolation, somewhere between 10% and 20% max, right?

My SS is a documented ZL-2 hood car. Original paint, unrestored, sales contract, Chassis Broadcast Copy, Protecto Plate, all original air cleaner componants and stickers.

Re: Question for the 1969 Camaro folks

Chevrolet rolled up option totals only where the option was specifically listed. For example is it correct to state only 116 Camaros were built with CE1 Headlight Washers? Of course not-it was included on each of the 37,773 RS cars. But as standard RS equipment CE1 is not listed on docs for them. Other options such as D96 [5,176] are the same-listed and counted only when specifically ordered.

ZL2 was included with COPO 9560 & 9561 [not listed on docs] and I doubt it is included in the 10,026 total. COPO production was low, maybe 800-900 units. ZL2 was a mandatory option[listed on docs] for Z10 & Z11 so that reduces the total to around 6,000 units. By the time it became available almost 84,000 Camaros had been produced. Based on engine production data about 4,500 Z/28s had been built 12/31/68 leaving 15,800 that could have been ordered with it. SS production was probably more linear [14.4% total] perhaps about 19,000 non Z10/Z11 SS cars.

So that leaves about 6,000 hoods distributed over 34,800 units; 17.24 %. Maybe 2,724 Z/28s and 3,276 SS cars. And that assumes equal distribution.
