Re: Identify this '63 Ford V8?

Upon further investigation, it seems it is actually in a '64 boat. The std motor was a 221cid 140hp Ford Interceptor. It has this number on the front No. ER90R319043 but that may be unique to the marine version. Specs say 3.50 bore, 2.87 stroke.

Would '68 302 valve covers fit on this 221?? Sorry, but I know nothing about Fords....... (I never thought I'd have to apologize for that....)

Ford small block W motors (221, 260, 289, 302 and 351W) take the same valve cover gaskets from 1962 thru 1987, so I'd bet the valve covers would fit also.

Re: Identify this '63 Ford V8?

The casting dates on the block and heads (under the valve covers) will be the answer. There will be one on the intake possibly but some marine manifolds did not. That timing cover is marine specific as well and also interchanges. Yes all of the Windsor family valve covers interchange. The 351 has its own intake and oil pan. There is also a stamped engine assembly date on the block to the right side of the timing cover. It is located on a pad just below the head. Many of these H/M boat engines were just garden variety engines. Some were solid lifter hipo 289's with Paxton blowers. I have bought a few Granatelli versions and the Paxton Gauges were worth more than the boat and the engine if not a solid lifter. Hipo. A pre 66 engine will also have a five bolt Bell as opposed to a six.

221 3.50x2.87 offered in 62
260 3.80x2.87 late 62-64
289 4.00x2.87 late 63-mid 68
302 4.00x3.00 mid 68-93

----Verne,,,Remember that all those marine exclusive parts have value if your friend is intending to use the motor as an automobile motor. When and if its appropriate I may be able to point you to a website or two that have marine for-sale sections......Bill S

Bill, I am a member of a few marine sites since I am an owner of an old wood boat. My friend is a boat person but has too many projects of his own to be interested in the boat I'm looking at. I'm pretty content now that it's a 221 140hp original piece. I'm just concerned about parts availibilty for the Eaton outdrive.

----Verne,,,You are right to be concerned. Parts for Eatons are very hard to find. Whole units show up on E-bay infrequently, but usually they have something wrong with them as well......Bill S
