Re: Stolen 1970 Dodge Daytona

The vin says it all. It's a 318-powered clone. XP in 1970 was the Charger 500 model which has nothing in common with the aero 69 Charger 500 other than the nameplate. No fastback, nor aero equipment. It was Dodge's way of marketing on the name to create a model that was one step above the base Charger. XH would be the base Charger model, XS would be the R/T.

In 1969 XX was the Charger 500 and Daytona, though some initial cars slipped through with XS vins which created havoc at DMVs all over the country when the paperwork would say XX but the vin tags would be stamped XS.

Pete,

When you say "long rumored," does that mean the two '70 Daytons "built with 1970 sheet metal" referenced by Wikipedia have not been verified to exist? I though one was "sitting in a yard in PA"?

I think he's referring to Jerry's purple car out here in Kansas, which has been pretty thoroughly de-bunked at this point, and the oddly painted green car that appeared in a photograph taken in 1970 and hasn't been heard from or seen since. Never heard of the one in PA. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I was asking because I don't know. I vaguely remember someone pointing out a '70 winged Charger that was in a state of neglect somewhere. I went to Wikipedia because it had general info on the Charger 500 that I was looking for.
I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to sit in these cars when they were new, and experience the exhiliration from the smell of the interior, sound of the running Hemis and 440's, the sight of it sitting there rumbling. These are things I will never forget even though it was 40 years ago. All I could afford at the time was a new Z/28 with a $101 a month payment, but it did not stop me from shopping.

I'd like to clarify this because this could be confusing.

From 1968-69, there was a base Charger and a Charger R/T (and, of course, the 500 and the Daytona NASCAR specials).

However, in 1970, they reduced the content of the base Charger, giving it a standard bench seat and other items that reduced its base price. The former base Charger from 1968-69 was now called the Charger 500, and it came standard with buckets among other frills. The Charger R/T continued as usual.

Calling the mid-level 1970 Charger the 500 indeed can be confusing because of the NASCAR homologation special from 1969. However, if you look at the Coronets, the high-line trim level was the Coronet 500 (with the performance Coronet R/T sharing similar appointments), so calling it a Charger 500 almost makes sense.

They made 1 Hemi Charger 500 for 1970. It's not an aero car and it's not an R/T. The vin ends with 100001. I have seen the car on more than one occasion. It is in a private collection in NJ.

That car is a factory freak cuz the biggest engine available was the 383v4.

I remember seeing pics of that car when it was a worn out POS 15 or more years ago.
