Hi Chuck,

The pad is a 3M waffle foam pad. I happen not to like them, just personal preference but I needed a very aggressive pad for this car. The Dewalt machine is great, no complaints. The best polisher on the market is a Mikita or a Flex. The Flex is costly, as is the Mikita but both yield great results. More importantly than the machine is a the technique.

The random orbital polisher cannot burn the paint because the machine spins in figure eight pattens. Contrary to this is the polisher/buffer which spins in perfect circles and can burn paint very quickly. For the novice, I suggest using the random orbital because it is error proof. It does take a considerably greater amount of time to correct paint, but for the enthusiast who is just starting with paint correction, its a good machine. Check out the Ultimate Detailing Machine or the Porter Cable. The UDM is a beefed up PC.

Lake Country makes great pads, as does 3M and Megs. It is all in the yarn they use to make the pads, which I'd imagine to be near all the same. The different colors indicate the difference uses. Orange pads are best for cutting swirls and scratches and blue pads are best for final polishes.

In terms of the uses of the different machines, simple waxing and minor cleaning is best for random orbital. Heavy correction, cutting, swirls, compounding, SIP, etc, is best for the buffer! No question.

Great info Dan, I would like to also add that when doing the edge of the panel such as the tops of the Vette fenders always make sure the pad is rotating away from the edge and keep it moving or you will burn it off real fast. I would recommend the novice do this by hand. On these original paint Dispersion Lacquer cars the object is to keep the heat to a minimum, these paints are soluble and are not catalyzed and the heat will soften the paint and cause a lot of problems. Urethanes like the heat, Lacquers do not.
