Re: ZL-1 number ONE

I have no clue about the motor in this car, I doubt it since it was raced for years from day one. And I believe I remember reading that Porterfield found a replacement motor for the car. But ya never know as those motors have shown up after all these years and been reunited with the original cars in some cases.

Dont think it matters too much on this car does it??

I was really wondering what the original motor of this car would be worth if in fact it happened to be found nowadays.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

My understanding is Porterfield found the orig block and re installed it in the car a short while before he sold it. Kinda makes you not want to beat on it like he used to when it didn't have it.

Would be nice to hear the story on how the block was found.

Re: ZL-1 number ONE

The block was found while I was composing the COPO article on the CRG site. Billy P told me the shop that prepped the original engine for racing stamped some information on it in an obscure location. Any original ZL-1 block warrants attention but a late '68 casting is really rare; only Fred Gibb and Billy P knew what was stamped on it.

Re: ZL-1 number ONE

You're saying the original block was identified by the machinist stampings? I'm assuming the original stamping on the deck are gone and there is no partial vin on the side?

Re: ZL-1 number ONE

Yes-not only what was stamped but where.

Some ZL-1 Camaro engines had the VIN derivative stamped on the pad.

Newcomer here, fwiw, Zl-1 number five had its derivative stamped on the vertical pad. The block was decked when I bought it.
