Informational poll?:hmmm: I love those! Ok, possibly
Dolomite und Rot (dark gray and red) is a winner amongst many when I show them that picture. It’s stunning in person too. That color with a cognac interior is also pretty classy. Attachment 242776 But I saw that color combo (red interior) in real life and it stopped me in my tracks I know, Joe. I usually have this all down and decided, and I did, but then I changed my mind. So basically, the two colors original in my plan were that Graphite and Silver Blue (shades equal to those). My 63 is silver blue and I don’t want two of the same color cars. I am with all you guys on that color with a red interior is pretty slick and on that Slabside it’s killer. If I were to build a Cobra, that’s what it would be. I’m leaning back on the Dolomite (Graphite) and Red inside, black top.:biggthumpup: I think…:dunno::grin::p:p:p Cheers Dave |
The first one but saddle interior.

Nine times out of ten, the first thought you have in your head is usually the best choice. Whatever you pick Dave, it's going to be awesome.
|
Personally (not that any one gives a rat's a$$), I think Silver or White exterior really show off the lines of the 507 better than any other colors. Silver with a hint of blue would be good too. In the 80s BMW made a bunch of silver blue cars with darker blue interiors (not quite a Navy, but pretty dark). One of my favorite combos.
As for interior, I just do not like red interiors. I know they are hugely popular, but they just make me cringe. Given how true to an original you have made the body, I think it would be a shame to use a color combo that was not offered from the factory. |
I like the bluish gray one with the red interior and silver wheels the best but those huge white walls don't do it any favors. I don't think you can go wrong Dave, it's going to be stunning no matter which combination you choose.
FWIW(not much), I love red and saddle interiors in leather or vinyl but don't care for them at all in cloth for some reason. |
Thanks guys for the thoughts. I value everyone’s opinions as they are good to hear and provide help no matter how small it may be. Plenty of time to decide. I’ve been looking at new cars and when I see a color that resembles an original hue I take note for future reference. The steel blue in that first photo is harder to match than you may think. Most are also resprays in BC/CC and are not true to original color. I’d rather not due a metallic color or if it is, very, very fine like the more pastel looking blues/grays on the modern cars have. I don’t think the heavy flake of modern metallics does justice to the lines.

If you are looking for a really bright silver that pops (with a red interior, of course) look at the Polaris Silver of the late 1970's early 1980's. I had a 1981 635CSI grey market car that looked incredible in that color. It really showed off the body lines perfectly. |
----I always liked Pewter Silver that was available on many GM lines in 1972. I ordered my 72GP that color. It's sort of a creamy silver that looks great on any car!....Bill S

Just to muddy the waters further for you Dave, I had a 944 like the one below and Sapphir Blau was a great color, and since Charley put up that 911 with the red interior, I thought I'd add that as well, and for the finale, the Special Edition 911 in burgundy and tan interior is just an extra possibility. :)
|
That is a nice color, Mark. I like the Sapphir Blau. Almost looks like there’s three colors sprayed there. Plastic fading, older paint, who knows!:dunno:
MK can insure the 507 for whatever I would like at this point since it’s about 80% done and it will be a titled and registered car:headbang:. So that led me to add up the receipts just to see where I was at. I don’t remember much after that point yesterday. I can tell you one thing, the jokes about hospital food are true!:thumbsdown::blush: Anywho, bumpers showed up yesterday along with other parts. Updates forthcoming!:scholar: Cheers Dave |

Fear not! That was a weak attempt at humor indicating a hospital stay after I actually added up what I've spent so far resulting in a potential faint, fall, and head injury after Kelly found out!
Don't worry, everybody OK here! She doesn't know!(that's a joke too. I wouldn't be where I'm at without her support on this! ) Cheers Dave |

We’re inching closer to the finish line! Well, we’re several thousand feet away and I don’t see any banners or anything. So nevermind. But forward progress the last few days! Driveshaft slipped right in so now everything is connected front to back. What’s left underneath here? Exhaust, emergency brake cables, rear axle brake lines.
Attachment 242848 Under the hood I started thinking about my remote oil filter set up and while I like it since it looks identical to what the 507 has, I don’t like the small oil lines designed for a small straight six. So I ordered a regular V8 remote oil filter and installed that low in the engine bay below the battery tucked up on the inner frame rail. Easy to get to and change the oil if that ever needs to be done. The original remote oil filter I was going to use will stay there and look the part but be non-operational. Attachment 242849 Attachment 242850 Bumper time! 507 bumpers are, how should we say, pretty rare to come across and they don’t make them aftermarket. But I did find a set of 503 bumpers which are similar and I figured I could make them work. These are custom made when ordering so I altered the front bumper’s width and that worked out well. Just fabricated brackets and it mounted right up! Very happy with it. Attachment 242852 Attachment 242853 Attachment 242854 Attachment 242855 Onto the rear..... Cheers Dave |

The rear was going to take some modification to fit. I placed it in position and then decided how much I needed to chop out of the center to shorten it to the body dimension. I removed about 3” from the center. I tack welded it together making sure the reflection had continuity so when rechromed, there’s no wave or distortion showing where I made the slices. First up was to mount the license plate light and trunk bezel.
Attachment 242856 Attachment 242857 Attachment 242858 Attachment 242859 Attachment 242860 Attachment 242861 Attachment 242862 Attachment 242863 Attachment 242864 Attachment 242865 The sides on the 503 bumper are too long and almost touch the wheel openings. I needed to make those shorter but with that comes a problem. Shortening them too much results in too much a difference in material between the end piece and the fatter part by the curve. I needed to find a nice balance between those two parts which also resulted in the bumper not being so long on the quarter panel side. Once I figure that out, time to cut! I tacked the ends in place and then trimmed the remaining excess to form a smooth transition between each part. I noticed that after placing it against the body after the mods, it was still a tad too wide. I sliced out another 1” in the center and then welded it back up. PERFECT!!!!! Rear bumper brackets get fabricated tomorrow and then it’ll be onto the exhaust over the weekend. I wanted to get the rear bumper on before I started on the exhaust so I could make sure the tail pipes have proper spacing and clearance. More to come!!!! Cheers Dave |

Attachment 242867 Attachment 242868 Attachment 242869 Attachment 242870 Couple more showing the bumper fitment. You can see how snug that rear tucked up to the body after splicing. I feel like Foose n' junk! Although they are thicker than 507 bumpers, they look the part and think they'll work. Very happy with the rear one after the modifications! More to come.... Cheers, Dave |
Very nice work on modifying the rear. Looks right at home on there now. How many people even know what this car is, let alone if the bumper is exactly as original...

Only a world class craftsman could pull all this off and make it look so easy. My hat is off to you Dave, you're an artist!

Very flattering, thank you! I started assembling my “show book” of photos I’ll have printed to have with me. Really neat looking back from the beginning.
BMW Classic Car Club magazine is being printed with my story in it. Will share it here when it comes out! Cheers Dave |

Turned my attention to exhaust over the weekend and think it came out OK seeing how I basically just cut and spliced things together. Was a fun project. I didn't want to load the car up and send it to a shop, so I decided to just crawl all over the concrete floor for a few days. Does a back good!:biggthumpup:

Once everything was lined up I fabbed up an equalizer pipe. I needed to notch it so it would clear the transmission crossmember and allow the trans to come out without having to remove the crossover pipe. Worked out swimmingly!!

My 3D printed grilles will have to do for now while I wait for the front surrounds and and side grilles to be finished. The shop is backed up so it might be a while, so might as well throw these in! They don't look half bad for being plastic.

Thanks, Bruce! You too, Dave!
The wiring is all connected up front: lights, fans, horns and I’ll be working my way backwards shortly. It’s getting EEERILY close to having power connected!:eek2: Although not conclusive, my punch list is getting shorter and shorter:scholar:: A-Pillar trim/visors/top latch/door glass weather strip channel/rearview mirror, Interior door panels, Heater ducting and controls, Top (both hard and soft), trunk and hood rain gutters, Emergency brake cables, Dash wiring, Tail lights, final dash wiring. I drop the seats off at the upholstery shop next week and they’ll do a quick modification to the seat base foam and covers for me. I’ll talk to them about the rest of the interior as well for when the time comes. More to come….. Cheers Dave |
I just read this: "Although not conclusive, my punch list is getting shorter and shorter: A-Pillar trim/visors/top latch/door glass weather strip channel/rearview mirror, Interior door panels, Heater ducting and controls, Top (both hard and soft), trunk and hood rain gutters, Emergency brake cables, Dash wiring, Tail lights, final dash wiring."
I need to go take a nap. |
Now that’s funny, Lynn.:laugh: Working on the heater controls the next few days. Should be a fun contraption to make!:scholar: This car would be done already if I didn’t make everything functional!:eek2: But the again if I didn’t do that I couldn’t be called Super Dave.:frown:

The article I penned for the BMW Classic Car Club was just published for the quarterly magazine and I thought I’d share it. Dirk, the president, wants three articles and this is the first. Hopefully you enjoy the read! Let me know if you can ready the pages after loading the full sized photos and I’ll post small pictures,
