Re: 72 T/A progess
Isn't that a sign of the Apocalypse? - your car getting finished before mine? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: 72 T/A progess
Hah! But it is not the SS that I had for 25+ years, its the other one I 've have for 8 (with 3 years in the body shop!) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif The cars name is Jinx because of all the problems it had and caused.

NICE!

Re: 72 T/A progess
Steve, good call on mocking up the window trim before paint. Have seen so many otherwise awesome cars with weird gaps/interferenes between the window trim and body.

Re: 72 T/A progess
Attention to detail is what separates the awesome, from the run-of-the-mill restorations! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 72 T/A progess
Some progress from this week. The full body is in primer. He spent some more time finishing the rear wheel well edges recently, back to their original bad, wrinkly, spot-welded finish. I wasn't too happy with the initial way they looked - they were too perfect.
Now the car has to sit a few days to cure and then more block sanding and then sealing and paint (hopefully, soon). http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i30/nk15268a/169.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i30/nk15268a/170.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i30/nk15268a/171.jpg |

Once she's in paint she will go much quicker... body work takes the time it takes...

Re: 72 T/A progess
Boy am i glad my 70 TA Ram Air IV is done. The most expensive resto i have ever done. So many 1 year only parts you wouldn't believe. On top of that a California car, only 24 made with Ca. emissions, imagine finding those parts, Hard and costly!
|
Re: 72 T/A progess
1972 is a close second for oddball parts. Try and find a points (non-unitized electronic) distributor for a 1972. The vast majority of 72 455HO's came with the unitized ignition. Luckily (or unluckily) mine originally came with the 1112126 points distributor. Unfortunately, I had to search for three years to find one.
The same search occurred for the 7042273 carb. The 4-speed, 72 455HO carb is one of the rarest pieces to hunt down. I would imagine that if I had not done everything myself except for the body, the restoration costs would be well into the six figure zone. |

A few progress shots of the rear window filler panel getting massaged into place. It's kind of a tricky piece since it forms the bottom of the rear window channel. It's a big water leaker if you get it wrong. It's also impossible to remove without cracking the rear window glass once the glass is installed. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i30/nk15268a/114.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i30/nk15268a/113.jpg [/ QUOTE ] I have been mulling over this statement ever since you posted it 3 months ago, do you mean that your rear window sits on top of the small flange that sticks out of the filler panel that covers the trunk hinge springs? |
Re: 72 T/A progess
There is a flanged area that the rear window sits upon (factory black painted area in photos below). The area where the rear quarters mate up to the rear bulkhead leaves a 1/8" drop that is factory filled with dum-dum sealant. (the area just to the right of the screw hole in the photo below)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/P7170015.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...P7170002-1.jpg The filler panel mates up to the edge of that flange and was installed prior to the window being installed so it is usually stuck in place by the oozed out window butyl sealant. The upper right slotted area is where the screw goes. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/S7002702.jpg |
Re: 72 T/A progess
So it should look like this with the window in (minus the rust!)
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...ORATION023.jpg |
Re: 72 T/A progess
Yup. Looks like your back window has been replaced before by the look of the sealer. I would recommend pulling out the the window and seeing what surprises await you.

Re: 72 T/A progess
LOL...that is a picture from the disassembly, it is out along with most of the rest of the car (see picture in my signature) I resigned myself before I started this process that it would be my own fault if anything surprised me on a car that was driven for almost 20 years in the rust belt. Most of the surprises have come from past body repairs that were not welded as solidly as I would like.

Re: 72 T/A progess
Went to the shop today to check on progress. Still in the final stages of blocksanding. Hopefully in final primer next week...

Re: 72 T/A progess
Working on the polyethylene valance. It takes some special primer/paint processes to get it to stick to the polyethylene. The left and right edges need some attention to get them to match to the contours of the front fender bottom.

Re: 72 T/A progess
Still grey, but slowly progressing along.

Re: 72 T/A progess
Went out to the shop today to bring over the upper door stainless trim so he could drill the screw holes for the clips. Better to do it before the paint goes on.
They have been working on the scoops and stuff. Here are some step by step photos on the fiberglass items. The fender scoop had a crack that needed some attention and the shaker had stress cracks around all the rivet holes as well as a cracked edge. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/197.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/198.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/199.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/200.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/202.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/204.jpg |
Re: 72 T/A progess
Some interesting work on the polyethylene valance.
They came up with an ingenous fixture to hold it in place so they could do the body work...they turned the nose/bumper upside down and clamped it to it. Now why the heck didn't I think of that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif DOH! http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/211.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/212.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/215.jpg And here is the magic stuff they found to do the filler work. They actually found a flexible epoxy filler that works on polyethylene. The stuff was recommended for ATV fenders (which are made of polyethylene) It's called DYNATRON 660 and is actually made by the Bondo Company. It sticks to the valance material very well and feathers out when sanded. They were able to build up the sides to match the fender/bumper contours. That will also strengthen the sides of the valance immeasurably since that is the thinnest and most fragile part of the plastic valance. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/216.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/214.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/213.jpg |
Re: 72 T/A progess
It's taken me a few days to read through this but I can see it was worth it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif AWESOME work you've done. Learned a lot that i can apply to the Runner. It was a Texas car and I can see that the safe rust remover can be a big help under it. Can't wait to see it in final form. My neighbor has a '71 455HO 4spd in white/blue and this reminds me of it.

Thanks for the moral support. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
Maybe one of these years she'll be back on the road. Hopefully before I give up on the whole crazy endeavor. I'm getting somewhat disillusioned at this point with the amount of $$,$$$ I have into it. But, hey, if that money had been in the stock market it would be worth $$$ now. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif |
Re: 72 T/A progess
She's in the paint booth now. Some final finishing touches before cleaning and masking. Hopefully it will be white just in time for Memorial Day.

Final detailing on the lower quarter seam.
http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/223.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/234.jpg Some minor repairs to the dash edges. This is the spot where the water always collects on second gen F-bodies. The driver's side just had some minor pitting, while the passenger side had a small 1" square soft section that needed to be repaired. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/231.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/229.jpg |

Re: It's white, finally
Stopped by the shop today. The paint is still curing. He is waiting til Monday to start the 1000 grit sanding, and then spray the final white coats on it. Then, some more cure time and color sand/polishing.
The lower body lines came out very well. The line runs from the front fender all the way to the rear and is a very subtle scalloped body line that usually gets lost in the bodywork process and becomes a slab sided look. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/263.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/264.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/261.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/262.jpg |

Re: It's white, finally
1000 grit then more paint? I've never used that technique myself but I'm by no means an expert. I am always leary painting over any scratch finer than 600 grit, even on fresh paint.
