Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
Probably the goofiest part is that the brakes seem to work fine and I'll bet the lid hasn't been off the master cylinder since it was put on in 1970.
And no I didn't change the oil or the filter. Oil is still pretty clean. |

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif
I would be very careful of the original oil filter. the filtering media is probably junk and can cause a serious problem. I could see why you wouldn't want to mess with it though. It is kinda shocking to see the condition of the inside of the carb. Looks like new. i was not as lucky with the fuel system on my low mile Hemi Challenger, The car had sat for some 25 years and the fuel system was polluted. I saved everything, but the tank and lines were loaded with a crystallized, smelly, brown junk that wouldn't just flush out. The attached pic shows what the inside of my tank looked like(still trying to figure out how to get the pic to show up in the post). Looks like rust, but it wasn't. If you scraped it with your finger, there was virgin metal underneath. The carbs were removed from the motor and drained so they survived unscathed. Very cool stuff. I have had the fortunate opportunity to view many low mile survivors in my day, but your Camaro is probably one of the best if not THE best. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif MB |
Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
Thanks for the reply Charlie. Yes, the inside of the carb is amazing! I figured the gaskets would be shriveled up though. Heck, they didn't last a year back then let alone almost 40. The newer ones are much better. I'm with Mike on the oil filter & gas tank thing. I would suggest an oil and filter change if you plan on running it. If the filter comes off ok you could always spin it back on for judging. I just wouldn't run it till it was spun back off though.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gifMy chevelle sat for eleven years and all seemed fine with the gas tank for the small use I gave the car the first year. After going through everything on the car and taking a few rides of more than a couple of miles I started to have a problem. Apparently the "crystallized, smelly, brown junk" was slowly becoming dislodged and intermittenly causing a fuel pressure problem. I was carrying spare filters and changing them frequently( I even added a filter before the pump). Eventually changed the pump and then the tank and lines after a year of being unable to get the tank clean. (The local shop said the tank was too far gone to clean.)
|
Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
I was worried about the gas tank until I took the carb apart and saw there was nothing but a clean carb with no residue. So I am going to assume the gas tank looks the same. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
simply amazing..THIS is a Benchmark car...period.
Norman needs to be Knighted, and Doris needs to be elevated to Sainthood. If you hosted a Car-B-Que..boy would they come now. I know I would. |

My guess is my Hemi car was sitting for many years in a collection before it got to me.....now it gets exercised regularily. With those clean carbs maybe Charles is right. Great job by the way Charlie!! Except now I feel like I have to go over my whole 70 Z28 and take advantage of this benchmark car. Keep the pics comin! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif John |

I spoke to Norman today and we talked about his car running again after 36 years. He told me he found out Doris passed away in December. In talking about the car and paint quality he remembered and told me about what looked like a D lightly scratched in the nose piece and sure enough it was there. It was there when he got the car. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/387429-tn_020.JPG
